Re: Windows 8 Beta

I threw Windows 8 on an HP laptop that doesn't get used much, but is still a decent machine. It had been running Windows 7. Performance seems good. The new metro UI is just weird to me. I try to think about it being a touch interface on a tablet, and it still seems weird. I'm trying to give it some ...

Re: Smartphone fatigue

I completely LOVE my smartphone (Samsung Epic on Sprint). I use it heavily for work, but I also really enjoy internet connectivity in my pocket, including social networking, news, uploading pics to share, looking up trivia to settle arguments, etc... I'm not about to give up my smartphone, but... I ...

Re: So hard to find good help...

I am convinced the number one reason for a dearth of qualified applicants is offering subpar wages. No, its not that. We're offering WELL above competitive wages and still can't get good applicants. Even if it were, if you're unemployed, you wouldn't work for $50k when you should be getting $65K an...

Re: Laptop Sound cards worth it??

I have a T410 at work too, and I am also quite disappointed by the sound quality of the built in hardware.

I bought an Alesis MultiMix-4 USB mixer to use at work as a USB audio device and headphone amp for my big Sony studio monitor headphones. So far, the setup has worked pretty well for me.

This year will be my first trip to CES. Luckily, some of the guys i'm meeting up with out there have been to the show a few times.

From looking at the floor plan maps, it looks like there will be plenty to see, even if you can't get into some of the things.

Considering the situation, he's not going to be able to use whole disk encryption on the boot drive.

You might be able to set him up with TrueCrypt, and an encrypted data partition that can be mounted once the system is booted.

Re: longshot, but looking for win95 ethernet driver

If you can't find drivers for the card you have, you might be able to find an old 3com or NE2000 based card. Those cards were in use back in that era, and drivers should be available for them somewhere.

Drobo has a rack mount box that supports iSCSI. A buddy of mine uses one at the architecture firm he works for.

He said it's not as fast a higher-end SAN, but it works for his purposes, which I believe are mostly backups.

I had a bunch of them on my hands a few years ago. I actually ended up going to a podiatrist to get them taken care of a couple years ago. Podiatrists deal with warts regularly, and can get you taken care of. He used two different methods on mine, depending on where they were. On areas with tougher ...

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad thing that more people can get into the hobby and be successful. I agree completely that the rapid feedback that you can get from digital photography does indeed help photographers learn much more quickly. I'm just speculating on the cause of the influx o...

Re: Why are photographers so helpless?

I have to wonder if part of the problem isn't related to the fact that the transition to digital, and the proliferation of relatively inexpensive dSLR cameras just about eliminated all of the barriers to entry into this hobby. As we all know, in the days of film, most hobbyists couldn't just fire aw...

I just want to add a wrinkle... Don't confuse current LED TV's (described as above) with the up and coming technology AMOLED, which is totally different. In AMOLED, there is no backlight. Each pixel produces its own light.

The HTC Desire is the Nexus One with HTC's Sense UI. I personally wouldn't purchase a Sense UI phone. Not because Sense UI is bad but because the Sense UI phones tend to lag behind in Android updates. I'm not sure there have been enough Sense UI handsets out to draw that conclusion quite yet. With ...

Re: How much would this build be likely to cost?

I wouldn't consider running RAID-5 using software RAID or an integrated controller. The performance hit is going to be too great. If you plan to use RAID-5, you're really going to want to invest in a good hardware RAID controller that can handle all of the processing itself without tying up CPU cycl...

Re: Best Practices for removing Viruses and other Infections?

My suggestion is to set a time limit on how long you're willing to mess with trying to remove malware. If you spend more than about 2 hours trying to clean the machine, you're starting to get into the territory where you'd be better off just formatting the drive and reinstalling the OS and your apps...

ESN is a CDMA thing, and could work for CDMA phones. GSM phones have an IMEI which is unique to the handset itself, but that doesn't take into account users who might want swap SIM cards/handsets on a regular basis. In that case, the software would have to be tied to the MSISDN. The company I work f...

If it were me, I would be tempted to use a mixer from somebody like Alesis with a USB2 or Firewire interface into the PC. Some of them can do 8 or 16 discrete channels into the PC and then recorded in a multi-track capable software package. that could be upwards of 10x the stated budget. You're rig...

I guess this begs the question... why are you keeping the data local on the workstation to begin with? I would store it all on server shares, that way you can get to the same data from any machine or OS on the network. Also, I would store it on the server on a pair of RAID1 drives, and perform regul...
