Re: SSH over DHCP by hostname

My loose hunch is that your Windows box is doing NetBIOS name resolution to your host while the iPhone and Mac aren't currently using NetBIOS for the name resolution. I think it's likely this is the case. NETBIOS is fairly legacy at this point, but Windows 7 will still fall back to it if everything...

I think ESD wrist bands are overrated - unless you're wearing a polyster jumpsuit and moonwalking your way across the carpet just touching the chassi every now and then is perfectly fine IMHO. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the system has to be plugged in for it to be grounded, otherwise you'...

I'd highly recommend sticking with the same domain. Limits the amount of workstations work you have to do - a new domain requires disjoining workstations, rejoining them to the new domain, and configuring profiles for your users again. Some group policy cleanup will help. If you can get the old serv...

If you're willing to experiment, you could uninstall the patches that are related to RDP from one system or the other, just to get an idea of where the issue is.

It's possible that patches did this - though not necessarily intentionally.

It's certainly possible for it to be damaged, but expecting it to be? Monitors or TVs that ship alone (often in their own packaging, not an additional box for protection) have far more opportunity for damage than the situation described here. But they usually avoid the grasp of certain destruction a...

Re: WD Passport Essential 2TB or Seagate 2TB Expansion HDD 3

You will get better performance out of connecting to a USB3 port versus a USB2 port. It's not night and day, but probably noticeable. The drive will max out the available bandwidth of a USB2 connection; USB3 gives it a whole lot more bandwidth, but then you quickly run into the wall on how well the ...

Do you not have any other drive you can test with before purchasing? It seems like the drive is going anyways, but it'd be good to know beforehand if there's another one that you can test with. For a new drive, I'd look at the WD Greens. I had one of the 10k RPM Raptor drives (160GB I think?), and a...

If you are physically at the system, and notice the LCD display or the light on the back is amber, this would make a pretty quick and easy way to check logs and get some history. Though, anyone running this sort of equipment should have some alerting setup, and be checking it from their desk anyways.

Not to turn this into a discussion about memory prices, but the premium to go from 8GB to 16GB is under $100, which I think is still completely reasonable if it's something you would benefit from.
