Re: Welcome to team 2630!

I'm just about to get my Opteron 170 back into "the fold" *groan*. What's the best way of doing this with both cores these days? Is there a true SMP client now? Or do I need two instances as before, each bound to a separate CPU core? Also, do I need to track down that neat imagecfg.exe too...

Re: Welcome to team 2630!

Uhm, hey fellas. *sheepish grin* I've been a TR "regular" reader since, well, about 2000-2001. I picked up the bug through college and stayed with it after graduation. I was more active about 5-6 years ago than I have been recently (AMD64 heyday, Opteron 1xx cores and all that). I've since...

Re: Hey fellas, an old-time lurker needs a hand

JustAnEngineer - thanks for your suggestions! I guess I'll let go of the "past" and retire the 320GB to another box. I might just start with two 640GBs that you linked to, or step up to two 1TBs. A scratch volume will be coming, though. I'm liking that motherboard you've suggested, also! L...

Re: Hey fellas, an old-time lurker needs a hand

I tend to have a lot of games loaded - new school and old school. CS: Source, GRAW2, Test Drive Unlimited, EVE: Online, NFS series, etc. I also do a fair amount of digital photography with a DSLR - D50 for now, going to a mid-range Nikon chassis shortly. My two 80GBs are just over 50% used right now...

Hey fellas, an old-time lurker needs a hand

I haven't posted here in FOREVER, since the Shintai wars or somesuch. I've been going through the motions to finally replace my pretty much 5 year-old Opteron 170-based system. Current specs are: DFI LanParty UT SLI-DR S939 motherboard, Opteron 170 dual-core @ stock clocks, 2GB OCZ Platinum Rev. 2 D...

Gentoo's alright, although I find when running a PC with a decent amount of horsepower there's nothing wrong with Fedora.

As I'm still more than happy with my Opteron 170 @ 2.2GHz, i doubt I'll do anything until at least K8L comes out.

No problem on the linkage AFAIK. I'll make sure the guys over at the AMD Forums know we've hit the TR frontpage. :)

Well, I'll let them know my batchfile thread hit the frontpage by way of sublinkage. I'll take the one degree of separation :)

Here's what I'll have fairly shortly once I reconfigure for the Nth time: 2 x 320GB Seagate Barracudas in a RAID-0 for overall throughput (system/games/video editing). 2 x Maxtor 80GBs in a RAID-1 for critical data backups (either flat file or image... likely flat file). The thing is... if you're us...

With my Opteron overclocked as it is... upgrades aren't really required to core components until at least K8L comes out. So I guess I am turned off Intel yet again by my current level of performance and the future promise of K8L. As noted elsewhere, Intel is JUST beginning to actually offer serious...

I actually like my Latitude D810 with its 1.7GHz P-M Dothan. The Dothan's a great chip. I often lament my corporation's dedication to a Dell-only enivronment, but my laptop is at least dependable and has a good battery life, while being a stout number cruncher. It's funny because I recall AMD showing their 8-way, dual-core HP box. There was no official testing time by any sites, and that was fine. There was only a wink and a nod and a demonstrated capacity to inflict harm. Said news made TR's front page. There was nowhere NEAR the BBQ factor. Why? Because ...

The link I posted to in my first reply was the how-to I wrote for the AMD Forums. The ImageCFG.exe tool is actually a NT4 CLI tool that was written by MS but never "offiically" acknowledged or supported. It works like a champ, and between my article and the primary author's website, you can't really...

It's repetitive because each time you launch an affinity-sensitive or multi-core-sensitive app, you have to go and set the affinity!

After 3-4 times, it gets a tad annyoing.

Have you actually SEEN the difference between not forcing affinity and after enforcing affinity? I'm not talking about the half-assed "set affinity" on running processes with Task Manager, I'm talking about F@H's Machine ID identifier and after a properly-set imagecfg pass. It's night and day. The M...

You can use the ImageCFG utility to force affinity for each distinct executable. I've done this for both instances on my Opteron 170... it's smooth as glass.

A copper heatsink and 80mm fan is your best bet for immediate temperature reduction. Secondary would be better case ventilation, both intake and exhaust fans with a fairly unfettered airflow to maximize cooling and lower your internal case temps.

that's a tad high. With a Venus 12 on my Opteron 170 @ 2.7GHz, ~22C ambient, I run @ 50-52C full rip, both cores. I idle @ 33-35C. 1.45 core voltage.

Fan at 4600RPMs, too, on the Venus... nowhere near flat-out.
