I have a Panasonic TZ1, and like it a lot. It's solidly built, easy to use, has a very seldomly rivaled 10X optical zoom for its size, a nice lens, and good looks too. Also, presumably due to the folded optics it uses, even at 10X zoom the lens doesn't extend any farther than most cameras with 3X zo...

I havent played in a loooong time. I still have an unlimited mox ruby signed and an unlimited mox emerald. I also have a forcefeild, a signed Abyss, beta icestorms and sinkholes and some other pretty rare cards that I don't remember at the moment. Are any of these cards worth anything? Probly worth...

I ended up getting a Thinkpad T41, and after some tribulations, most things now work. (I put Gentoo on it, primarily due to familiar evil being preferable). If I can get the last couple of issues ironed out, I quite like it. Super Smash Bros. works just fine with the Mobility 7500, which is the impo...

I wouldn't count on much, if any, resale value for laptops like these. Note: Location: Hungary. P2 and P3 era laptops for sale are pretty common around here, and I'm buying one of these used, in fact. One reason for this vibrant aftermarket may be the 20% VAT on new goods, which is, in any case, th...

The contenders: IBM Thinkpad T40 14.1" XGA Centrino 1.5GHz (quoted verbatim -- no clue if this is Banias or Dothan) 512MB RAM Radeon 7500 40GB HDD CDRW/DVD combo 2.2kg 120 000 Ft ($1 is roughly 210 Ft) IBM Thinkpad T41 14.1" XGA Centrino 1.6GHz 512MB RAM Radeon 7500 40GB HDD CDRW/DVD combo 2.2kg ~8 ...

Thanks for the input. Thankfully, though, the situation has been resolved by my parents lending me some money, which I will pay back once I sell my current rig, so I no longer have to follow the complicated procedure outlined in the first post.

Oh, well, I forgot to mention that I don't have a computer at home -- the one I had is now in the dorm, and I'm intending to sell it for funds. So the laptop would be my primary and only computer. Various other family members have computers at home (which is what I'm using now), but -- asides from b...

I don't know. I've come to really hate having to lug lots of stuff around all the time, which is why I don't like the idea of an external drive. The more stuff I have to lug around and fiddle with, the less happy I am. Having just the single notebook to carry would be simple and easy, and I would pr...

Around when did laptops switch from PATA to SATA?

Short version: See topic. Long version: I intend to get a notebook sometime in the near future, as it seems far more practical at this point than my current desktop PC (limited space in dorm, going home for weekends, etc.). By my calculations, if I sell my desktop, I'll have enough money to buy a fa...

Thanks for the help. The solution turned out to be setting the "Limit Drive Capacity to 32GB" jumper. I hadn't previously considered this, as I assumed it did what it said it does, as opposed to "[ ] If Your BIOS Sucks, Check Here".

New drive in old computer (problems)

Background: My sister and I used to have an arrangement where, as the drive in her computer is pretty small (2GBish), all the music was stored on mine, and shared over samba. This worked great. Then, a few days ago, I moved off to a dorm for uni, and took my computer with me -- so I bought a new 80G...

The problem I have with Avril Lavigne's songs are that they all sound the same. So much so, that in a thread somewhere else on this forum, I wrote a checklist for a avril lavigne music video. It went something like: ... I didn't like Under My Skin, IMO it isn't as good as Let Go. And now I don't pa...

Something like half my music falls into this category. Mer de Noms by A Perfect Circle sounded like random psychedelic noises at first; now it's my favorite album. Other bands and albums which sounded like noise before coalescing into music: dEUS, Under My Skin by Avril Lavigne (shoot me, if you wis...

Re: GNOME or KDE?

KDE is more configurable and tweakable, and you can turn it into just about anything you want. GNOME has more of an emphasis on perfect defaults and an Apple-like zen. Essentially, go with KDE for power and flexibility, or GNOME for beauty and simplicity. (This is not to say either is deficient in t...

I've hated Sony ever since they ousted Nintendo with their PlayStation shovelware. Which may have been unreasonable criteria, but everything they've done since has only reinforced it. 1. The graphics drivers aren't that good for Linux. True, for the most part. Not all hardware is well supported. There are some very understandable reasons for this, which you've no doubt heard too many times already, so I won't repeat them here. The only real solution -- short of improving it your...

14! Now, seeing who has the most votes by a runaway margin doesn't surprise me... It does me. Personally, I was expecting Slashdot. And I had somehow accepted that Tom's is the most popular hardware site, but that it's 10 times more so than the next closest is frightening and inexplicable. (If it we...
