Re: Adjusting 'Processor Power Management' to save battery/t

keep it under 90 C if possible

That's good to know. Before I realised how to stop turbo boost, the CPU was getting up to 105-107C, but does stay just below 90C now (hovers around 88C when playing CSGO usually). I did wonder if i was worrying needlessly, but thought I'd better ask anyway!

Re: Adjusting 'Processor Power Management' to save battery/t

Yeah, capping the cpu at 50% and dropping the gpu by 135hz saw a 5w drop under load, from 17W to 12W. Not too shabby!

Re: Adjusting 'Processor Power Management' to save battery/t

A bit of both really. When the CPU heats up the whole chassis gets much hotter, so I figure by limiting the heat output of the CPU it'll help keep the whole system cooler. You're right, I'm sure it's still fine for now, I'm just thinking of keeping it alive and well for as long as possible. I can't ...

Re: Adjusting 'Processor Power Management' to save battery/t

I know it'll idle at low clock speeds, but I was hoping to try to cap its maximum performance to stop it getting so hot (I'm in Indonesia at the moment, soon to be Australia for their summer). I've had it for 3 years old now, and I've done a reasonable amount of gaming on it over the years, so want ...

Adjusting 'Processor Power Management' to save battery/temps

Would setting the max processor speed to say 30% affect the hardware at all? I'm using a 2012 rMBP with Win7 (i7 3720QM @ 2.6GHz), but since my usual workload is minimal (web browsing, VLC, twitch/youtube), I figure I may as well try to minimise wear by keeping temperatures as low as possible, while...

Re: A reasonable price for my old system?

Thanks very much for your input. Assuming best case is $500 (or £300 in the queens), I'm going to ask for £200, as the case is a bit scuffed, and he has no real need for the medium-power GPU. The main selling point I think is the SSD, which is still £165 new . That was bought less than two years ago...

A reasonable price for my old system?

Hi all, Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this, I wasn't really sure where to ask...please let me know where if not here! I have an old system I'm going to sell to a friend, but don't want to rip him off, or sell myself short, and have absolutely no idea what it might be worth. Specs are;...

Re: PSA: Some laptops may disable Turbo

For what it's worth, on my rMBP while overclocking in windows (read that people had been successful, turns out the GPU has loads of headroom!), if you don't limit CPU usage to 95% (in advanced power options) - which I believe disables turbo boost, one of the cores goes nuts and ends up 105-106c. Usu...

I've got pretty big hands too. +1 for Death Adder. Very good mouse, and not mega expensive. Also comes in a 'black edition' with absolutely no lights. Win win!

May as well jump back on topic then!

This actually annoys me on my mac...I'd rather they snap to a grid, dragging stuff around ends up burying things. Doesn't do my OCD any good at all. :)

Re: Quick SSD Question

Hibernation can be useful if you want to power down but keep all open windows in place...just a thought. Doesn't 'sleep' leave the RAM powered or something? That's a good optimisation guide by the way, thanks! I'll go through that a bit later. I had hoped that Windows would have disabled most of tha...

Bulletstorm is fun, as is Hard Reset, and Serious Sam 3. Crysis/2 were both decent. Big shout for portal and portal 2 as well, if you fancy a puzzle-fps.

Re: SDD/HDD questions before I upgrade my computer

Do it agian this time, and ghost (or alternatives, any suggestions?) the ssd to the hdd as soon as you have everything as you want. Then a fresh install should be simple.

That said, it won't be all that long before Win8, if you're that way inclined?

Re: Planning Next Monitor Setup

You'll get a lot more useable space from 2 x 24 vs a 30, which will be perfect for office productivity, web browsing etc with many windows open at once (since using a 2 monitor setup, i'll never go back). However, someone more involved in photo editing may favour a single, larger monitor.

Re: Any experience with 240GB Sandisk Extreme SSD?

Going to bump this with a new question, rather than start another thread.

Would I notice a difference under everyday use if I were to hook up the drive to a PCI-e SATA3 card, vs my onboard SATA II?

If so, are there any SATA 6Gbps add in cards that also have USB3?

Re: Any experience with 240GB Sandisk Extreme SSD?

As far as I'm aware, there is only one model of 240GB Sandisk Extreme... The 'ultra' was their first drive, a sort of proof of concept (hence the relatively poor spec). The 'extreme' came after, a more competitive attempt. Something like that, anyway :)

Re: Any experience with 240GB Sandisk Extreme SSD?

Sorry, probably should have specified, back up to a second drive (probably to a new F3 I'm thinking of getting at the same time!) So, once backed up, I could boot from either drive. Obviously there's RAID1, but I assume it needs to use similar drives (or would one SSD, one HDD work without losing ss...

Any experience with 240GB Sandisk Extreme SSD?

Firstly: I've decided to jump on the bandwagon, and after a quick look around, was prepared to pay the premium for reliability of a 120GB Intel 520 (£150 from OCUK). After checking my Windows + Program Files sizes, (170GB together), realised I should suck it up and go for a 200+GB drive. Thing is, t...

I believe that's one of the videos I have watched....if so then the most suprising part to me is the laptop they were demoing the technology on did not even have a dedicated gpu built in..they were rendering just from the cpu...and getting like 20 fps...that tells you it will be well coded and that...

Lol. For some reason I rarely use the Enter key on forums. Maybe I should type things up in a Word Processor like I did in college, then cut and paste my results to the forum for a more professional finish.
