Re: RTX 2080 / Ti similar to iPhone X launch?

I didn't think you were arguing against me per se, I just didn't think the following could be something you could say with confidence. I have many friends with more money than sense and I see how they spend this kind of money on hobbies. $1000+ bikes, $1000 kayaks. When our hobbies intertwine I'm t...

Re: RTX 2080 / Ti similar to iPhone X launch?

I'm not quite sure how you can measure how much fun other people are having, compare it to yours, and be sure that you're having just as much of it, but okie dokie! FWIW fun isn't the only objective with a hobby (though I admit it should be a main criteria). What I am really trying to get across is...

Re: RTX 2080 / Ti similar to iPhone X launch?

Are you waiting for retail availability of the already-launched models (XC, XC Ultra) or later models like the FTW3 or Kingpin versions? https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=11G-P4-2487-KR Good chance it will be a unicorn so I’ll keep my eye on the XC product lineup as well. I preordered t...

Re: Curved Screens General Impressions + How does it look with 3?

The curve radius is usually 1800R or 2000R. No way he's going to sit 1.8M from the screen, right? The side screens will be at the wrong angle if he sticks to the screen's curve only. This never occurred to me. I'm tasked with setting up and planning a custom desk layout for him so I guess I need to...

Curved Screens General Impressions + How does it look with 3?

I've heard a few people comment about upgrading to a single curved screen and saying it took some adjustment to sit center to the screen because it was distracting/weird if you were off center at all. people have also mentioned that while it's nice for gaming, normal reading and web browsing is dist...

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

I do appreciate the suggestions on making something "work". This isn't a do or die situation where I have to have something, so I will probably lean towards not MacGyvering something for several reasons. One it would take more time than I'd like to invest in creating something. Secondly I ...

AFAIK the length of the standoffs aren't standardized like the positions of them as specified by the ATX spec.

They have to be at least 6.4mm long and no wider than 10mm X 10mm according to the ATX spec. It's not uncommon to find them longer than 6.4mm because of case design decisions.

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

In the previous picture I linked to, you can see the threads of the collet version (zinc standoff that's second from the left). Basically it's just a standard standoff that is slightly longer than intended and a shoulder is machined down to the same height as a regular standoff. This way everything...

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

I do a lot of custom projects for cases and enclosures and find the centering standoffs are helpful for alignment, plus mounting motherboards is easier when there's something to hold on to the board before you get your first screw into it. I can have something professionally made, or even do myself ...

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

I have not seen those come with a case in a while. IIRC I had a few cases that used those a decade or so back? I agree, they do make mobo installation easier since you're not trying to simultaneously line things up and put the first screw in. But I also felt like they made the motherboard slightly ...

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

They're called motherboard standoffs - I did a quick search on Amazon and they have a ton of options. I'm aware of the standard ones. I am not interested in those, I have a whole coffee can full of them and if my coffee can doesn't have the exact one I'm after I know where to order non-standard one...

You know those standoffs with the small collet that are threaded, or those standoffs with the nub? I wants them. I browsed through McMaster-Carr, DigiKey, Newark, Amazon, Ebay, mod supply websites, Newegg and countless other searches and supply places (including alibaba) and I can't seem to find the...

Re: Car accident, what is insurance's responsibility?

Coming from someone who has been hit by other drivers 10 times in 10 years this is what I learned: If you go through your insurance company you pay the deductible and then they go after the other insurance company and reimburse you when it's all over. If you go through the other insurance you obviou...

APC SMX UPS sound levels - 1500RM2U vs 2000LV

The concern about noise levels has caused me to spend way too much time deciding on which to go with, I don't think I've ever spent so much time on a ~$1500 item. The unit will be around people and there is some concern about noise. An existing SMT1500 (tower model, rated for 45dBA) is in the enviro...

Hah, a dedicated Linux VM for it? Yeah, I can't complain. We have customers that we install the software on their Windows server and I can't remember the last time we had an issue with it so it's really not a problem anymore.

Re: So who here is actually mining?

I just see the same scams repeat with a slightly different packaging. Yes, but the analogy to what you are saying here is that beanie babies would have been reincarnated as "Cutey Children". It wasn't. There were plenty of wannabe Ty Warners who I am sure tried, but it didn't take off. Ye...
