My wife has been bugging me for weeks to redeem some for her. Haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm curious if the hassle is worth it too.

Re: Fast USB Thumb Drive

Oh I'm already using MDT to create the bootable thumb drive, albeit it's a fully contained one. The customer has very strict security requirements. One of them is that while we are on-site, the entire network is physically turned off and we aren't allowed to spin up a temporary network. We can't hav...

Re: Fast USB Thumb Drive

Samsung's Bar drives should be a bit faster (say 25-50MB/sec depending on the type of data being transferred, with the 128/256 drives being faster than the 32/64), but no USB flash drive is going to be particularly good in the writes department. Is it necessary to have a completely separate flash d...

Fast USB Thumb Drive

Hey there gerbils! I've been doing some offline mass imaging of systems using the SanDisk Ultra Flair 64GB USB3 drive. The reads are fine for my task, as the systems run mechanical drives, but the write speed is atrocious at around 10-15MB sustained. Since the imaging is offline, I have a rather lar...

This just keeps getting better, thanks for sharing SS! If you need to get a new tube, how do you source that? Just used ones that are still in good shape? I googled around and came across this article: https://gizmodo.com/as-crt-supplies-vanish-the-classic-arcade-machine-is-vi-1792968855 I've though...

You really aren't benefiting the community by going to the extremes that you do. The normal trolls are just your regular background noise found everywhere. Your reactions to trolls, or people just as highly opinionated as you, make you sound like a megaphone. Even when I agree with you, you make the...

Re: No... not him! Don't tell me they got him too!

TR literally wants to win the lottery so someone can pay reviewers to keep doing what TR has always done, all because the business model isn't self sustainable anymore. Aside from the part where I'm literally not employed by the site any longer and speaking only in a personal capacity, you may want...

Re: No... not him! Don't tell me they got him too!

I agree with you 100%. I'm also trying to be realistic about what is immediately feasible and, from my perspective, any kind of site reboot is unlikely under the current regime. To date, my understanding is that the subscription option has been a nice bit of supplemental income, but it's still sign...

Re: No... not him! Don't tell me they got him too!

I don’t like youtube reviews myself and I never understood the appeal compared to the standard reviews. But it was obvious that’s where things were going and where the money was. It’s not like TR had to nuke all their articles and redirect the URL to their youtube page, but they also weren’t going t...

Most people who hate on a company usually just feign owning both brands. I'm impressed by your dedication and spending $85 of your marketing funds purely to make such a claim.

I'm only suspiciously kidding of course.

P.S. Thanks for the cheese sauce recipe!

Re: Converting 12V (PCIE) power to 5V

It's an image reconstruction server for medical 3d imaging. Honestly it smells like some kind of rebranded HP or something commissioned from them, I wasn't aware that HP did custom stuff without branding though? It's using a common slot PSU that only outputs 12v and slots directly to the motherboard...

Re: Converting 12V (PCIE) power to 5V

My understanding was that you could just cut the trace and solder the 5v pads and forget the pot, but perhaps it still plays a roll. Several reviewers state it didn't work as intended (their fault or the design) so I guess it could still be needed. Wall warts have tended to be on the noisier side fr...

Re: Converting 12V (PCIE) power to 5V

I was looking at the switching versions but the reviews made me worried given what I was powering. Since I don't know much about this stuff it makes it hard to distinguish between user error and crappy designs. That's one of the reasons I was interested in the LM7805 since it seemed like a slightly ...

Converting 12V (PCIE) power to 5V

I have a fairly proprietary system that is powered by switching PSU that only seems to output 12v. The mainboard has a 10pin header that outputs 12v so you can power PCIE video cards (obviously it's a unique connector, but the breakout cable is a dual 2x3 PCIE power cable). I have no intention on in...

Thank you both for the suggestions! I thought about a dSLR, the biggest issue is space, though it would definitely be more than sufficient for the quality I'm after. I'm not quite sure how you can measure how much fun other people are having, compare it to yours, and be sure that you're having just as much of it, but okie dokie! Re: Curved Screens General Impressions + How does it look with 3?

The curve radius is usually 1800R or 2000R. No way he's going to sit 1.8M from the screen, right? The side screens will be at the wrong angle if he sticks to the screen's curve only. This never occurred to me. I'm tasked with setting up and planning a custom desk layout for him so I guess I need to...
