Running 64 bit GW2 on a i7 4700, 16 gigs RAM @ 1866Mhz, NV 760 w/2 Gigs VRAM on a PCI 3.0 x16 slot; it runs pretty smooth except for huge WvW battles and world train bosses. "Pretty smooth" means 50-60 fps+ in most cases, at 1920x1200 with all options on and up to the max (except depth blu...

Re: New phone opinion

I still have my Nexus 5. Great phone, the only two issues (and these are biggies) is poor battery life and weak camera. But other than that it's a great phone. Maybe this fall I'll get another phone, a new Nexus. Good value, good phones, and they get security and other Android updates. What's not to...

Re: Tomb Raider is coming to Linux!!!

I must be one in the minority. I'm a gamer. I use both linux and windows. But I don't play games on linux. For most of my daily computer usage, windows and linux both have apps and general usability that can get done what I want to get done. But the few times I've tried any graphically serious game ...

Re: Motherboard + CPU Swap In Win10 WOW!

This kind of stuff was a nightmare with XP and I guess sounds better in win10 though I still want a clean install on my main system. Ms has really abstracted the hw drivers with the rest of the windows internals so a mobo swap should be mostly painless assuming the OS can get any new drivers needed.

Re: So what are you using for computer audio?

My motherboards built in autdio, a Realtek ALC892 in my case.

It's been said before: unless you're doing music or audio content creation and you're just doing playback, the motherboard's audio is usually good enough. The speakers are what makes a big difference.

You are doing it wrong. You need to setup PGP email at both ends. Then it doesn't matter which smtp servers it goes through or which NSA wiretaps it goes past. Re: Mechanical Keyboards - Took the Plunge... Sort of.

I'm typing this on a Unicomp mechanical keyboard which uses actual springs, similar to the IBM model M. It also doesn't have the windows start key (which I find annoying), has USB, and has lasted years.

With peripherals, in the end it's up to you and what you like.

Re: Do you use Blu-Ray on your PC?

I have a Blu-ray drive in my main PC though I rarely use it. Only for the occasional OS reinstall or a rare time like needing something off an old CD or DVD. I have a blu-ray player to the TV for movies, but blu-ray on PC without paying for software is unfortunately difficult (and my computer area i...

Good to know this is monitored (and I know you guys have lives) - lots of spam on the 'net. Is there a way the system can be set to identify a spam poster and auto block them from additional posts, say prior to mod approval. This is already done through the "Hammer of Banning (HoB) +4", bu...

Cheese :o Back up first. But I would then transplant and hope for the best. Sounds like you know what you're doing, have the motherboard drivers on a usb drive before hand, do the hardware transplant, and then go to device manager (or if your NIC drivers come up go online) and get the rest of the dr...

Work around for a VPN issue

Hi all, running OpenVPN server (2.3.1) on a home router, when using the Android OpenVPN client via StraightTalk 3g or LTE (underlying carrier is AT&T) I see on sites like whatismyipaddress.com that the IP address changes literally every second or two. While I can't be sure why, my guess is this ...

Winamp was (and still is) cool, though something that will get no feature or security updates is not usually a good thing (tm) in the long run. I've tried a few media players (winamp, sonique, foobar2000, mediamonkey, amarok, and probably a few others), and the main one I use now for my music is VLC.

Re: Mechanical Hard Drives Today Are Garbage?

I feel like there's a lack of appreciation for how modern storage technology (HDD and SSD) are a non-trivial engineering design. Complexity begets fragility. You are right that there is a lot of complexity in modern drives, and it's amazing what we can fit on them and how fast they work given the l...

Could that also be because 8.1 is supposed to go RTM at the end of next month. Not that some users would switch/care, or maybe MS just has some over stock :-)

This has been discussed before on this site and others. There is no free software for Blue ray that is not a hack or can play all commercial disks. This is why HTPC is dead/dying. No offense to people that have built them, and the hardware exists, but without blu ray support and ROBUST cable card su...
