Re: Intel Processor bug incoming?

Sorry if I sound stupid but does this affect AMD Zen CPUs? I have heard conflicting reports. Thanks.

Re: I7 8700 reaching 100C

since those heatpipes are likely just solid metal Heat pipes don't work that way. They are actually copper tubes (or pipes if you will) that have a liquid in them. This is why they have the soldered point on the end of the pipe. The liquid used has a low boiling point so that it circulates through ...

Re: I7 8700 reaching 100C

I know recent Intel processors do get hot because of the thermal packaging (paste under the IHS) but that does seem a tad too warm. 1.41V seems way too high for this part. I don't think the cooler is at fault since those heatpipes are likely just solid metal. As for stress testing: I know later vers...

Re: Upgrading to CoffeeLake, or should I wait ?

Intel is apparently introducing Z390 and mainstream 8C/16T processors next year sometime. Also Ryzen 2000 series is expected to hit around February-ish, which may have an effect on the prices of Coffee Lake as it stands. I recently bought an I3-8350K and relatively low-cost Asrock Z370 motherboard a...

I probably drink far too much Diet soft drinks, Cola, Lemonade, Fizzy juice... Probably a little over 2L a day. I'm on Pepsi Max at the moment. I think I am addicted to it. But I only buy it when on offer at £1.25 for a 2L bottle of Max. Not a fan of the 17p "value" cola, though.. I've bee...

Re: Form factor trends

Well, I finally got it built: https://i.imgur.com/LOTyOO0.jpg Had a little snag, though. The 900P is too thick to go in the ML08B's 2.5" drive cages, so I had to improvise and used some thermal adhesive tape to stick it where the slim optical drive would have gone. Actually worked out quite wel...

Re: Form factor trends

I wish Silverstone made an upmarket version of the SG05. It's a great little case but it's just a bit cheap and flimsy. I'd pay 3x more to have the frame made out of a stronger steel and an anodised alloy shell rather than the badly-painted steel. Given the premium that mITX components command, the...

I have just ordered a Silverstone ML08B-H for my next build :) I think the highlight of the build is the fact that I actually destroyed my budget and went and bought an Intel Optane 900P 2.5" drive. Lol. Anyway back to cases, I love small mITX cases, the ultra-compact ones. Anything that takes ...

Re: Power supply question for new build

Hmmm....how about getting the 1070 Ti 'cause it's not much below a 1080 in performance, use the savings from not getting a 1080 to get a really robust PSU, then overclock the 1070 Ti to 1080 performance territory and Bob's your uncle! (I have NO idea what that phrase means, but love it). Yeah I thi...

Thanks for the reply :)

Alright, it's probably a good idea I get a bigger PSU then. I know you said 500W+ but would 450W be okay? How about this one? They also do a 600W one but my budget is already stretched quite far for the 1070 Ti :/

Power supply question for new build

Hello! I am going to be building a mini Gaming PC with an i3-8350K and GTX 1070 Ti all wrapped up in a Silverstone ML08B case. In order to save a few quid, I have found an old SFX (Not sure if it's THAT old) power supply from Silverstone rated for 300W and Bronze 80PLUS laying around in my house. I ...

Re: MSI X370 Recognizing RAM but not Adding to Total?

I have had this issue a couple of times, but in my experience it was down to bad memory (which is probably not the case here). I had a Corsair Dominator 4x4GB kit on my MSI X370 SLI PLUS mobo that would recognise all four sticks, but only come up as 8GB in the total. The system wouldn't boot every o...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

Lots of Vega hate. :( And I can sorta see why, to be honest. I was expecting more out of it, but I think it will get considerably better with time. It's the first GPU to feature the highest DX12 feature tiers (I think?) and has features like NGG Fast path and Primitive shaders awaiting to be activat...

Pascal FP16 rate question

Hello, I have a question to people that are knowledgeable on the subject... about Pascal's FP16 rate on consumer GPUs. I know that GP100 supports the ability to run two FP16 ops in the same time as one FP32 op, but GP102,4,6,8 do not as far as I'm aware. They are 1/64th the speed. My question is: is...

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

I am a little disappointed in the score it is getting. :( But hopefully like people have been saying RX Vega should be a bit faster. I was expecting it to match 1080 Ti... Something seems wrong because it's 52% higher clocked than Fury X yet only around 40% faster... That said , If it can match AIB ...

Re: How long before Intel trounces AMD again?

...Not really. Architecturally speaking, Intel is operating at a different level. They are so much more space efficient than what AMD will be producing.. There was a thing going around that stated that Ryzen cores are smaller than intel's; https://www.techpowerup.com/img/17-02-07/bc3ce7afd1b4.jpg

Re: How long before Intel trounces AMD again?

I pre-ordered a 1700X. I'm not going to lie: a big part of the reason I wanted this was because I want a CPU that isn't Intel. Sure Intel is vastly bigger and will likely counter AMD, but you have to give them credit. They have (according to the leaks and official information from AMD, I know, I kno...

Re: Zen by the Numbers

If Zen's performance and performance per watt is on par with Haswell I might very well be looking at the 4C/8T for an HTPC build I'm planning. Haswell-level IPC would be a great win for AMD, I think. But it really depends on the final clock speeds. I'm planning to upgrade to the 8C 16T chip to repl...

Re: Modular graphics card

I actually think this is a really cool idea. Awesome for upgradability and such, but I think the complexity of a GPU and its subsystems would make it very difficult. I am also not sure if GPUs (especially high performance ones) are suited to being socketed, due to the power draw or something. I coul...

Re: Fiji's Challenges... Failure Inevitable?

I would argue that most of today's upper midrange to high end cards have plenty of bandwidth for even 4k. I'm sure even a GTX 960 with its measly 128-bit memory interface could handle 1440p/4k just fine if it had more ROPs/shaders/TMUs at its disposal. That would be a stillborn argument, because yo...

I've changed the cables many times but it still happens. In fact, I've used the exact same cables connected to drives that drop on the Maxi with another two Z97 motherboards and they've been 100% fine. This morning, my system failed to reach windows so I've finally given up with the Maximus. The las...
