Re: AV1 Video Codec

Some of the talk seems to focus on a binary decision; YouTube will stream X, or it'll stream with Y. I imagine the path of least resistance for all involved will be the streaming provider querying your browser what hardware accelerated codecs can be used, and then stream AV1 if supported, otherwise ...

So they're doing it through the banking angle, I figured that'd be easiest. That's also pretty mild stuff. I've met my share of contractors that have good off the books revenue by avoiding reporting thresholds. (Edit: To be fair, they're hiding money in currency that everyone accepts, you can't take...

Re: Tell me about the new Crypto-Currency

The underlying tech gives banks an impetus to finally upgrade from their 1960s and 70s back end processes, even central banks are looking at distributed ledgers. In economics circles it's created more excitement then anything I've seen since micro-finance became trendy. I hadn't heard of any US regu...

Glorious is nailing it. I'm generally a free market, libertarian dude, but seeing the mania around cryptocurrencies is enough to at least give me pause. When an Uber driver tells me he just bought some bitcoin, it's Bubble Time, just like flipping homes in 2006, and before that, tech stocks in '98. ...

I also think that the overall clock speeds will be lower than Bulldozer. That 8-core 3.6GHz speed is reasonable in my brain only because of the number of cores. When we get around to quad-core APUs I'm optimistic that it'll hit 4GHz. I'm also prognosticating that such an APU's moderately-multithrea...

Re: Nuclear, Solar, & Wind Farms, Oh My!

The best way to solve energy consumption issues is to reduce the population. The less people you have the less energy you will consume and therefore the less pollution you will create regardless of which energy source you choose. The Chinese were onto something with their one child policy. The only...

I'd like to see them exploring something new , not rehashing old fights with the Klingons and Romulans. Send them through a wormhole to the Andromeda galaxy, or something. I'm with you guys on this one. The Gamma Quadrant is almost 100% ripe for exploration, too. DS9 crew did some prior to the Domi...

Re: Would you buy a 16-core CPU for $600?

Lots of focus on video encoding, of which I do some but not a ton, but I'd still snap one up. 16 cores would help quite a bit with some of the database and data analysis work I do, though I'm not sure if all my tools (like Excel) utilize that many cores. I've just never had the opportunity to test t...

3. There are some situations where there simply *isn't* a viable replacement (e.g. legacy CNC machine control software). This. Our factory floor runs a mix of 95, 98 and XP, only some laser jigs could update to Win7, we just haven't taken the time since it works flawless as it is. To update would c...

Wow, Windows 8 in retrospect was apparently just ahead of the curve. I'm actually hoping the website is currently broken, because either some things don't line up (possibly because of ad blocking?) or, well, it's just that bad. If mobile people are complaining too, that just means perhaps we're past...

It's (usually) not active sabotage that makes government work slower and more expensive. It's a combination of the regulations, as one person noted, and the usual total lack of any incentive to do better. If anyone needs proof, SpaceX; they brought private sector vigor to the fight, partly because t...

I disagree desktop linux is a solution in search of a problem; I think there's tons of demand for a desktop OS that doesn't suck and isn't Windows, which every 'prosumer' would likely at least consider. OSX would be more widely used if Apple wanted to put the resources in to it, but there's no reaso...

Easy to work with, rarely hit any issues, and the available packages (and their up to date nature, it's like most d...

A co-worker not long ago had pictures posted on FB from his last trip during archery season up north (past tense; FB deleted them, someone complained). I wouldn't say at all that bows can't take on bigger game, or reach out across an open field to do so. He certainly seemed to do OK. :)

I'm a little surprised, but I'm in an older industry with legacy software and absolutely everything is Windows based, no matter how dumb that might be (even industrial equipment running Win98). This all sounds good, though, really. Competition is good. Microsoft, most of us would agree, need it. Oth...

Idiot managers are the real reason. The Internet didn't help anything, but they didn't play to their strengths or iterate on what worked. They chased buzzwords and tried to replicate the "new media" model. I come from a newspaper family, and I've had a front row seat for the whole thing. ...

Anyone seen or done comparisons on quality with this on Skylake? Subsequent generations seem to of got speed tests but I can't find anything fu...

The only reason to wait for Kaby Lake is the (as far as I'm aware) unsubstantiated rumor that Kaby Lake might bring Iris Pro (the really big cache) to desktop parts as a selling point and reason to buy instead of waiting for the NEXT refresh, which would be Cannonlake. Having a big cache is nice and...
