Re: Personal Supercomputer, didn't know there was such a thing.

OK I joked in another thread about there being a market for a "Personal Supercomputer" for consumers starting at $100,000 and lower. Well I googled Personal Supercomputers and I was expecting small clusters of cheap or older computers someone put together just for giggles, not something i...

Re: Gaming? More RAM for future titles..

Early demos of the Project Scorpio hardware have shown its ability to handle 4K, 60fps gaming Yeah right, High end gaming computers struggle to do this. Anyway, it doesn't surprise me that with Mods PC games are climbing towards 32GB of memory usage. Why do so many people have such a hard time unde...

Re: 16C/32T Ryzen "Threadripper" 3x faster than 1800X?

Maybe I'm missing something, but doesn't the CPU only have double the cores and memory bandwidth available? It'd have to be running at like 5.5GHz so it had a 50% clock speed advantage to do 3x faster. You're not missing anything, that's exactly what I was getting at, unless AMD really hit it out o...

16C/32T Ryzen "Threadripper" 3x faster than 1800X?

I find this very hard to believe but according to a blender test AMD ran at Computex it's about 3 times as fast: http://www.legitreviews.com/amd-ryzen-threadripper-runs-blender-benchmark-computex_195121 There are a couple of obvious explanations: This is a different project than that used to showcas...

According to Netflix in order to stream UHD content you need a STEADY 25mb/s or higher Internet connection:

Re: Core i9 vs. The Threadripper Preview

I think you guys are taking too much for granted with respect to clock speed, I think it's naive to think that "Threadripper" will be clocked the same at the current Ryzens, Intel doesn't clock their high core count cpu's the same as their quad cores and they arguably have a superior manuf...

Re: Core i9 vs. The Threadripper Preview

Those numbers can't be for a 12C/24T "Threadripper" cpu, they are barely any faster than the results for the 1800X and the i9 is almost 3 times faster. We can make an educated guess that a 12C/24T "Threadripper" will be 50% clock for clock than an 1800X under well threaded worklo...

Re: Dell Hates AMD?

I'm a firm believer in the simplest answer being the best answer; while I don't doubt that Intel, MS and Dell (and some other OEMs) have colluded in some form at some point in time, I think that it may have sprung up organically rather than a concerted effort to screw would be competitors. I think b...

Re: Can anyone clear up: 5960x with 128GB RAM?

I would think that if there was a GPU accelerated version, OP would've already looked into that angle. He knows what software he's using, and would presumably be aware of its capabilities. OP also said: "VFX software is a pretty mixed bag of multi-threaded and single-threaded processes". ...

Re: Can anyone clear up: 5960x with 128GB RAM?

If I may add some fuel to the fire, I would do the following: 1) Take it as gospel that Intel knows exactly how much ram the processors they make are capable of using, even if the limit is an artificial one that Intel introduced as a way of getting potential buyers to pick a Xeon over an i7. 2) See ...

Re: Is Linux getting easier to use then Windows?

This hasn't been true in years (becoming "slow" over time). I'm on the same install of Windows 10 since day one of upgrades, and Windows 7 was the original upgrade on day one. Keep your BS elsewhere, because you're not going to pull one over on anyone that knows their stuff here. Most of ...

Re: Is Linux getting easier to use then Windows?

That doesn't talk about putting swap on the ramdrive at all. The only thing it says about swap is that if the ramdrive gets too big it will spill over into swap (i.e. the exact reverse of what you were saying). It's not the exact reverse but you are correct that it's incomplete, I thought I had don...

Sophisticles, I hope you're actually talking about using zram? Putting swap on a compressed ramdisk via zram is great, but what you're talking about makes absolutely no difference whatsoever (unless there's a bug somewhere, or I suppose it might make things OOM with more spectacle than they otherwi...

For me, even if Windows 10 didn't have all those telemetry/spying issues and the new issues with ads being displayed within the OS, I still wouldn't use it, it's garbage, I find it clunky, weird, odd to configure, not to mention very limiting. Re: Is Linux getting easier to use then Windows?

Linux needs a better installation process. Sure, there are "download and play" repositories in various distros, but insofar as the non technical user is lost trying something as simple as installing an app outside of those repos, linux will not be perceived as more user friendly than wind...

Well, I read through almost all of the posts and here are some thoughts: 1) I am really shocked to see someone, who shall remain nameless, be pedantic and point out that "Linux" technically only refers to the kernel and not a complete OS. While it's true that "Linux" only literal...

Re: How long before Intel trounces AMD again?

Well, it seems that the rumors were true, for the most part, not a knock out punch but competitive if you pick and choose your battles. I don't see them as the great bargain that some seem to think Ryzen 8 core cpu's are, if you factor in price of cpu, motherboard and ram you still end up with a sys...

How long before Intel trounces AMD again?

So, time for some light hearted speculation/flaming; in light of all the Ryzen related "leaks", which at this point I think we can take as face value, it's seems certain that within a couple of weeks AMD and it's "fans" will be able to crow about being the price/performance champ...

Re: Ryzen Passmark: Prime and Physics are off, excels at everything else.

I have said this before and I'll say it again, AMD needs to decouple its cpu business from Intel's technology if it has any hopes of ever actually being in the black for any significant number of quarters. The need to partner with Ubuntu, RedHat or Suse and bring to market an ISA based on ARM or RIS...

Re: What does "You're hanging seven" mean?

It was an old Peter Gunn episode.  Peter and Jacoby (police detective) were walking into Jacoby's office and he yells back (toward the crowd outside the office, who may have been the press; not sure), "you're hanging seven in 30 minutes". Based on the context perhaps he meant that the pre...

Re: UHD playback on PCs DOA?

That's a 40Mb/s stream (at 4K) and the sharpness really isn't even remotely the problem with the image quality. To get rid of the detail artefacting near the camera and the detail loss on the distant water, you'd need to up the bitrate to about 320Mb/s at 4K which means you'd need three 100GB discs...

Based on what I read, both of you can be correct with additional qualifying statements.  The key to this is whether AVX2 is used.  You missed quoting the AVX2 part from sophisticles.  If the video encoder uses AVX2 instructions and Prime95 is before 28.x where AVX2 is not used, then the encoding is...
