Redhat 9's partitions can be anywhere on the physical disk. Doesn't really matter whether they're primaries or logicals in an extended partition. The only problem you *might* have would be based on the computer itself. On old machines, you used to have to make sure your initial ramdisk and/or the se...

In that case, you can get the Mandriva SRPM of the older version and try to update it into a new SRPM with the current IceWM source. Note that this is not something I would recommend for a newbie, but if you've got the patience, it is do-able. You've just got to get under the hood of that SRPM and s...

Your problem is that you installed from source rather than finding RPMs specific to Mandriva. The source based install almost certainly doesn't know anything about what distro you're using, what display manager you're using, or how to integrate with either. Part of the nicety of running a distro is ...

there's no boot.img for a floppy in FC5. You can still install FC5 if you can boot from either USB or PXE. However, as this old computer doesn't even allow booting from CD, I doubt you'll have any luck with either of those. Just the same, have a look here and see if you can work something out: http:...

oh, and to answer your question about hackers sending packets: they can indeed send packets with the tcp bits faked to look like packets that are part of an existing connection. that's why these days we have stateful firewalls. the firewall doesn't just trust the tcp headers in the incoming packets,...

again, extrememly and overly complicated. and now, it's broken! you use $IFC in computing $EXTIP, but IFC isn't defined anywhere now. not that this is a big problem, because I can't find where you're using $EXTIP anyway... and why on earth do you need to define $LOPIF and $LOPIP? those are lo and 12...

I highly recommend it. Linux is much easier to secure properly, and if you're going to be running it 24/7 as a folding box anyway, you might as well use it as your firewall/router.

do yourself a favor and buy an external, honest to goodness hardware modem. something that connects to the computer with an old-fashioned 9 pin serial cable. if you stay away from USB and internal modems, you'll almost certainly get a "real" modem, not something that requires software to do its job.

you've just about got it. but you don't specify the directory on the array that you want to mount as /home, you specify the partition (or in this case, RAID device). which, by the way, is exactly what the fstab line you quoted already says. at any rate, making a guess about what you've done so far (...

linux isn't for everyone; that's certainly true. quick fix to get rid of that error message: in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1, take out the line that starts with "HWADDR=". that'll make the message go away, at least. it won't guarantee that the same physical ethernet interfaces are always deteced in the same order, and therefore always...

fdisk/cfdisk will clear the partition and mark it as a 'Linux' type, although I'm not sure exactly what difference that makes, because... You'll still need to create a filesystem on the partition after it's been cleared. Assuming you want this partition to be used just by Slack (i.e. you don't care...
