Re: 'Upgrade' to 780Ti now from Reference R9 290 or wait?

We're on 14.12 for stable, and 15.5/6 for beta. Try one of the newer drivers, maybe even the modified w10 driver, but use DDU to uninstall beforehand. Perhaps there's some leftover cruft causing issues. The 290 as a single card is faster than the 780, and I recently did the reverse of what you're su...

Re: What is wrong with the Fury X?

Scott said in the podcast yesterday that he used drivers that were available directly from an AMD FTP site for the press. Saw that. Then they either mis-reported the version number, or AMD's internal FTP driver didn't call them 15.15. Either way, the official version available to the public is 15.1...

Re: What is wrong with the Fury X?

Appears much less likely to be a driver mismatch: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=28230087#post28230087 How is that? He's referring to different versions of 15.15, not 15.5. There has to be something going on with the driver, because sites using 15.15 are getting better numbers: h...

Re: What is wrong with the Fury X?

This sounds absurdly unlikely. Then you haven't been following AMD at all for the last several years. It's happened numerous times on numerous occasions. The Rage driver was one of their most notorious screwups, as it took several releases to finally get the right version out. It looks like AMD had...

TR mentions they used driver version 15.5. 15.15 is the official R300 driver. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if this ...

Re: What is wrong with the Fury X?

What was your issue with the MG279Q cable? I get an occasional error that mentions displayport. Or are you referring to a physical mismatch? (I have the large DP connector connected to my 290X and the small side plugged into the MG279Q. Physical mismatch, but you're saying the monitor supports the ...

Re: What is wrong with the Fury X?

It is just how the shader blocks are structured. It does reflect this in the synthetics where anything that cares about fill-rate and shading prowess the Fiji silicon blows away the competition but when you start dealing with geometry. The Fiji chip fares no better than its Hawaii predecessor. Do y...

Re: AMD withdrawing fury samples unless favorable?

Meh. Certain sites show discernible bias, and it would be a waste to send a biased site free hardware. I'm not saying AMD should be asking for favorable reviews, but it is their right to ask for an unbiased one, and refuse review samples to sites that would just publish a hit piece. also: Kitguru br...

Re: Nvidia Pascal the holy trifecta?

I don't think speculation matters at all, and is quite pointless to discuss until actual launch. If you want to play games today, pascal doesn't matter, what is available today matters. We'll find out how pascal performs when it comes out, but it really isn't relevant until it does.

Re: AMD Radeon 300 Series Arriving To Retailers Today – R9 3

Eh. GCN 1.2+ is nice, but 1.1 is still fully dx12 compliant, and faster than a vanilla 780. Unless you need 8GB, the real bargain is on the 290's, and you can count on AMD supporting it for a good while.

Re: Witcher 3 Performance Stuff

Didnt they say it was because Maxwell does tessellation much better than kepler? No. There is no way Kepler has tessellation issues. All NV cards since Fermi have had outstanding tessellation performance. Kepler should be obliterating the 290 in every game that uses tessellation, but that's simply ...

Re: Witcher 3 Performance Stuff

Good luck with that. I tried it and was back to Nvidia after a year. I did too, as I tried "upgrading" to a 7970 from a 470, and it was worse, so I went with the 780. However, that simply isn't the case now, as NV has dropped kepler like a hot potato, and the 290 is beating my 780 in near...

Better watch out, leetgamer will be here any minute to call you a liar and a variety of other things for claiming that Witcher 3 actually runs on a Kepler ...

Re: I bought a saphire 9800se 128MB... HELP!

Ah, but the R300 cards have an important and largely unsung advantage: multisampled antialiasing is only supported with a 32-bit framebuffer. Hmm. I think there were also some performance tweaks that were enabled when using AA, so I had usually had AA enabled at all times with my 9800. Didn't know ...

Re: I bought a saphire 9800se 128MB... HELP!

SmoothVision is higher quality than 3dfx's AA, and ATI had "free" AF unlike NV. That, and there are a few old games that you might want to try with truform. Don't use Quincunx on Nvidia, use MSAA + AF. I think you will get similar quality to the 8500's AA, and the 4200 would be still fast...

8500?! Nah. Either get a Ti 4200 64MB, or if you want to stick with ATI, and get better performance but maybe slightly less compatibility, a 9500 Pro. Nope. You don't get it. I have the 128mb 8500, and it does SmoothVision. SmoothVision is higher quality than 3dfx's AA, and ATI had "free"...

I've tried both pale moon and cyberfox. Stick with pale moon. Cyberfox doesn't have a proper update mechanism. You have to manually download every update. They do have a update utility (not built in), but I never got it to work. Cyberfox potentially might have less issues than pale moon, but it isn'...

Re: Nvidia on why G sync is better

Ghosting is an issue with the monitor not implementing overdrive. Most modern 60hz monitors offer it as an option, and the 144hz ones will offer stuff like lightboost. It's something the manufacturers have to add themselves, not AMD. This just seems like NV found an adaptive IPS monitor that doesn't...

It is from increase in scaling up graphical content but I suspect most of it is due to lack of incentive to keep things small through optimization and compression since TiB HDDs are so commonplace and affordable these days. Compression, yes. Scaling, only somewhat. It's from storing multiple audio ...
