Re: Why do cables go bad so easily

I've had cheap In The Box SATA cables go bad, as well as some ethernet cables that are a PITA to unplug. That's it.

Re: Compress vs Canned Air

Makes sense, compression of moist air and condensation, ect. Good thing its dry as hell where I'm at, but still good information to have, thank you. So your saying its got the same or better pressure than a fresh can of canned air? If that's the case and its got a straw attachment, I'm willing to g...

Re: All SSD, all the time

All my boxes and laptops use SSD's as OS drives. Intel G2 120 in one and 128GB Micron C4's in the rest. No failures.

Next year at this time the only thing that will have spindle drives is my backup server.

Re: Tablet recommendations?

Really, the only downside of the iPad4 is the price and iTunes. The only downside of the Nexus 7 is the horrific QC in place at Asus. My friend is on his 6th one (not an anecdote, look at the web and lots of people have problems with theirs), he calls it a boomerang; Asus throws it and it always ret...

Yes and no.

They will relegated to slower, mass-storage tasks only.

Platters will be here until SSD's match them in price/capacity.

Re: Running OS X via Virtualbox (or VMWare) on Windows 7

I had a hardware installation of a Hackintosh...and it sucked. I know have it running under VMWare and while it isn't bad, but it isn't something I'd want to use as a primary OS because the performance just isn't there.

Re: gtx 470 and power supply

The best route would probably be Enermax or SeaSonic, but Corsair is just fine. I have no experience with Enermax, but I use Corsair branded Seasonics and regular Seasonics. I don't care for the Corsair branded Channel Well stuff even though some of them review well. I've even got an Antec branded ...

Re: gtx 470 and power supply

It's not the wattage that counts, it's the total power on the 12V rail. You quoted 28 amps, which gives you 28*12 = 336W. If your CPU consumes little power, then it can cut it, but personally I wouldn't go that route. Even if the whole system under load consumes only 250W, that means that the PSU w...

Re: i875k vs the 930... which platform to choose?

This might be one case where buying, a 930 with the hope of reusing the motherboard might be better than buying the dead end socket. When AMD gets 8 cores on its AM3 platform, Intel will be presured into releasing something for the 1366 socket. If by 8 core you mean BullDozer, be aware that BD is s...

Re: 5850 vs. GTX 470

I was going to grab a 5850, but I like to game at 1080 with all the eye candy cranked up and in this regard the GTX 470 does a pretty good job of showing up the 5850 and even the 5870 at times. I'm getting an EVGA model for their kick-ass warranty.

I'm going to grab this tomorrow...can anyone recommend a good PvE server, Horde side? PvE servers are lame and shouldn't be allowed to exist. Therefore you should pick a PvP server instead. I played PvP server 4 years ago...quit long before TBC. Also, I have no intention of playing the "High E...

Wire splicing question

I've got to lengthen the ATX 4-pin wires because they are too short. What type of splicing method should I use? Butt splice good?

Dumb question I know, but I'd hate to do something that makes $500 go up in smoke and the 4-pin extensions look kind of shoddy to me.

I've had mine for several months now and no creaking.

My G5's left button used to do that until I ran a small file in between the button and the casing.

I nuked an Asus mainboard one night...drunk and trying to clear the CMOS with a screwdriver. It had no pins, just two solder tits on the board.

Zzzt pfff and it was dead.

Junk new anyway, had a crappy VIA chipset.

That must be a nice mouse, but I still remember back in the 90's when computer stores gave mice away for free. It was good enough to play on QuakeWorld with back then, so I can't bear the thought of spending $70 on a mouse now. It's funny, the stuff that spoils people, heh. They gave them away beca...

I've had this for about a month....great mouse. Higher quality all around than the original G5 which was not bad to begin with. Button clicks are nicer and the mousewheel detent on the G500 is much more positive than the G5's. The ergonomics are much better too, without the odd thumb hump on the G5 ...

How quiet are these things? I've got a couple Seagate 7200's and they are inaudible.

My WD Black is a coffee grinder and it's getting on my nerves, so I'm thinking of grabbing 2 of these for raid 0.

Also, I decided on the E8400 Why? Would you not benefit at all from $30 savings, a third core and a cheaper motherboard? If you don't need another core I would look into an E5xxx or the X2 550 BE that TR recently reviewed. Not going to buy another AMD cpu until someone makes a chipset for them that...

No real warts I can see. I'd be tempted to recommend a Corsair HX520W to save a bit of cash and get the modular cables. Bioshock...can I give it away?

I have the retail (non-Steam) version of Bioshock. I'm done with it, and want to send it to a friend. It's got some weird DRM, will my friend be able to play it after I've uninstalled it?
