Re: The Tech Report forums got a big upgrade

The Tech Report looks dead to me. It's a pity. It has been my primary source of information about pc's for years. Personally I do think that whoever owns Tech Report should just simply sell it to those who desire a proper tech site and Forum... If a known, established, trusted member of the TR comm...

Re: My pc freezes randomly. / help ?

synthtel2 is right on, as is JBI (and others). Might as well start at the VERY beginning. Reseat DIMMs and PCIe cards, and check all power connections to mobo, GPU, drives, everything. One cat hair in your PCIe or DIMM slot will cause major issues. Then reset BIOS to optimized defaults, and adjust f...

Re: Airflow optimization question

I second what K-L-W says. No 80's at all - their time has come. Skip the blowers. More intake than exhaust (like two intake, one exhaust) and you should be set. If the CPU cooler blows toward the rear fan, that's your exhaust fan. Use top and front for intake. If CPU cooler blows up (like some Hyper...

Re: My pc freezes randomly. / help ?

You may get a clue as to whether you're having disk or memory errors, among other things. You may also want to run chkdsk from command line and initiate Memtest from within Windows. Yeah, I'll just go on back to an earlier suggestion - it's that kind of day! Gee, who would've thunk it would come do...

Re: Marvell 92xx SATA chip temperatures?

Any thoughts on the generic Microsoft SATA drivers versus Marvell? At this point, I always use MS SATA/AHCI drivers unless there is a VERY specific reason not to. I've had a couple of add-in SATA cards, though not within the last 5 years or so (excluding LSI, which also run ridiculously hot). I don...

Re: Upgrade Questions; CPU's, Mobo Brands, Cooler

Personally I would be inclined to stick with Asus for the mobo; they have rarely let me down. AM4 heatsink retention mechanism is incompatible with previous HSF mountings; this could be an issue for re-using your existing HSF. There may be an adapter kit available for your cooler (check the Cooler ...

You want to have a look at Event Viewer as well as the above suggestions. I would look specifically in System first, and Application second. If this PC is a desktop, can you try the drive as SATA? If laptop or miniPC, I guess new dock or new drive. Maybe both.

Re: New ryzen 3000 build

The Crucial 32GB RAM kit (3200, 2x16) from Funk's news post a couple weeks ago is the first kit I've had in two years that will run over 2400 on my two Ryzen 5 1600 systems. If going G.Skill, I would probably step up to Trident Z, or just go with the Crucial. I haven't had luck with 4 DIMMs over 240...

Professional review all the way, Zak. Too bad this is the 7th or so time since Sunday I've tried to congratulate you on an article well-written. On the bright side, the 3700X looks very competitive, and probably hits the price/performance sweet spot for a lot of people. Not reviewed here, but the $1...

If you really need the latest driver for everything, go through System Devices one-by-one and you can watch your memory controller go from (for example) Intel Skylake U-series Memory Controller to Intel Xeon v5/E3-1200 DRAM Memory Management Controller. This is probably the best way to keep Manageme...

Re: Cross over cable to other pc, W10 wants password?

Of course, if you have an Active Directory, all that stuff can be centralized but the setup cost for a full AD network is overkill in your situation. Well, there's always "slmgr.vbs -rearm" ad infinitum on the 180-day Server trials. They claim 6 reactivations (or maybe the original + 5) b...

Is it performing like a 2GHz CPU or a 3GHz CPU? I have an old i7-920 oc'd to 3.8 GHz and neither Task Manager nor HWMonitor (from the CPU-Z author) show a CPU speed bump while running the short CPU-Z benchmark, but the Min/Max CPU speeds DO change in HWMonitor after the test completes. I don't like canister designs - pain in the @ss pulling them around and watching them bump into things (and occasionally "hanging-up"). May not be consensus, but those are my thoughts as well. Except for the dust cup, I strongly prefer Shark Rocket Ultralight stick vacuum to Kenmore canis...

Rufus is able to restore full size of external media. You shouldn't even have to read the FAQ, which is about 500 pages of options I never knew existed, with a bit of attention to the settings used.

Does MacBook pro have headphone out? You could try that, or a phone or tablet, to see if the static is isolated to the desktop. Does it happen if the desktop is the only source connected, or only when it's the second source connected? How about if, just temporarily, you hook up the DAC to the deskto...
