Re: Anyone repair anything today?

Just fixed the electric water pressure sensor in my boiler. I'd tracked the fault down to it, got the part number, ordered the replacement, released the pressure in the system, unscrewed the old sensor and then tried to fit the new one. Of course I'd ordered the wrong sensor and the thread different...

Re: WOW! Computer for Seniors

Posts on the first page says that the OS on these things is based on Tiny Core. The newer brother MFC printers I had a quick look at on the brother site have "deb" installers for their drivers which might work once converted to Tiny's own format but I've no idea how you'd go about installi...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

It's not a repair but I made this: https://photos.app.goo.gl/zH9pvPXLKVvL6zGM7 Yes it's another bookcase but it's also a door and in proper scooby-doo style, pulling a particular book forward releases the catch (well it will once I've figured the catch out). It only leads to a small cupboard and it'...

So just to be clear. The section "Downloading Minecraft Server" gives a wget command specifically for downloading V1.14.1. You need to check the minecraft download page for the url of the latest version (https://launcher.mojang.com/v1/objects/bb2b6b1aefcd70dfd1892149ac3a215f6c636b07/server...

Re: Pease Pudding from Townsends.

Years ago, walking through the warehouse club, beef rib roast was on sale. It looked good, so I dropped one into the cart. When I got home, I scoured several cookbooks and they all came back to "Standing Rib Roast with Yorkshire Pudding", so we made it. The roast was fine, but Yorkshire p...

Re: Pease Pudding from Townsends.

The British might have some of the nastiest cuisine on the planet. Bangers and mash is fine. But yeah, in general the Brits aren't known for their culinary skills. The thing about British cuisine is that it doesn't really exist any more. The traditional cuisine (pre Victorian) was, most of the time...

Re: Need help/advice on converting to linux....

Virtualbox has that "seamless" mode so your Windows application windows appear right on your linux desktop which is pretty cool. TBH though unless it's just that one thing and the inconvenience of a VM for it isn't that great I'd probably stick to Windows for that computer. Operating syste...

Re: the official Indian food lovers thread!

The assorted Indian breads are what I really love, paratha in particular. Recently I was really pleased to discover that I can get them frozen in supermarkets... 2 minutes in a hot non stick pan straight from the freezer. Nothing like what I'd expect to get in a restaurant but an excellent quick sna...

Re: quieten an noisy case for cheap

I've also had good results in the past using car sound insulation (amazon stocks it) on the inside of a case. You only need a small patch stuck to each panel for it to work, no need to cover the whole thing. I suspect a thin patch of plywood or MDF would do just as good a job if you had some laying ...

quieten an noisy case for cheap

Maybe this is old hat but I thought I'd share the way I quietened down my desktop's noisy case. It's mostly a quiet machine but under certain conditions something would resonate and produce a really annoying buzz. This is nothing earth shattering or clever, I just stuck some insulating tape all arou...

Re: Chrome/Brave on Linux

Well I tracked down my memory leak and it's nothing to do with chrome. Cutting and pasting a file from a folder inside a fuse mounted fs to another folder inside a fuse mounted fs caused gjs (the gnome shell extension service?) to go nuts. The crazy thing is I don't really use any gnome extensions b...

Re: Disabling wallpaper over remote VNC connection

Are you just using the built in "Sharing" option in gnome settings for this? If so install and run dconf-editor Under: org/gnome/desktop/remote-access there's a setting for "disable-background" which defaults to "off". I've never tried changing this but it looks like it...

Re: Kernel 4.15.0-72, kernel panic on boot, Dell R710 Ubuntu

I have very limited knowledge here but I'd guess it depends on the point in the boot process the panic occurs... if you don't have a writable filesystem or a network stack there isn't really a way to log anything.

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

It's normal for new technology to take off in the usual areas first, look at cellphones and broadband, yet some people seem to be in disbelief about this shift in the trend centers of the nation for some reason, like it's hard to look up, I don't get it, apathy I guess? My argument is simply that w...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

I could see a pretty good use case for diesel-electric hybrid trucks where the diesel-electric drivetrain eliminates the complex and expensive transmission as is already done on train locomotives. The hybrid part then provides for a smaller overall engine, cold-start preheating of the engine and em...

This is anecdotal but don't forget the hidden health implications of electric cars... that being a significant weight gain for drivers who end up spending a lot more time in service station eating crap while waiting for the EV to recharge. One EV own I was talking to put on nearly 30lbs in the first...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

It seems like electric is awful for busses, because where would you charge all of them? It takes significantly more time to charge a bus than to fill its tank. trolley buses run off the mains electric using a pole to reach overhead cables so they're charging while driving along, at least most of th...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

Because, duh, there are plenty of electric busses already, have been for DECADES: They're called trolleybuses. They had 'em in Philadelphia when I was a kid. The only difference is that instead of a pole, they would need a bank of batteries in the back. Ok, you lose some seats etc..., but that's pr...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

Wear and tear shouldn't be an issue at 100-150K miles either. You often see ex taxis for sale with over 500K on the clock that have only received standard servicing and are still working perfectly well. Sounds like double selection bias to me. First, police and taxi fleet buyers traditionally prefe...
