Re: Cheap laptop with good keyboard.

You can get a very well specced T450s for that, maybe a T460s. Avoid the backlit keyboard unless it's required, the keys are kind of slick.

If you can find the applications in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall, you can try using the uninstall strings from those keys.

So, you're probably not going to be recommending used laptops, but... $300 An off lease Thinkpad T400 or X200 class depending on portability desires $600 Using a student discount, and maybe you can negotiate with Lenovo to offer a greater discount for your students considering you're recommending th...

Re: GPU passthrough

Keep in mind that ZFS dedup is pretty hard on the ARC/L2ARC for the index, and it's capped at 25% of the ARC. So you either need a lot of RAM just for ZFS, or a very fast disk for L2ARC. I'd recommend an NVME disk for L2ARC since this is a VDI host that needs RAM for those guests. Normally I'd use N...

Re: Best i7 laptop for someone wanting low noise and no gaming?

Actually, now that I see how well a 7500U works on passive cooling, I wonder what would happen if you just ran a quad-core Core i7-HQ processor on passive cooling? You might get 4 cores of base frequency just fine. If someone here has a laptop quad-core HQ processor, I'd be interested to hear what ...

Re: tired of searching for a good budget (under US$200) phone - ideas?

How much is the Xperia X running down there? It's only 5" and has a smaller battery, but Sony is typically excellent with power optimizations. It has an SD650, and an SD card slot. It's going for $250 here, and Sony isn't very focused on the US market so I'm not sure if that would be higher or ...

I'm not defending the "advertorial" but this statement doesn't appear to be correct... "The problem is that the chart isn’t even graphically accurate. For example, for Resident Evil, the GTX 1050 scores 63 FPS, but somehow ends up on the left side of the “60 FPS” vertical bar. "...

I have some Negra Modelo right now, I think that should count? Nice dark lager, a squeeze of lime... great in the summer, and the lime prevents scurvy! I also have some Otra Vez, another great summer brew.

The 120 is great after about 5 years, it takes off a lot of the heat and sweetness, but I look at it as more of a barleywine than an IPA. But there are definitely better for the price.

That may be a problem; I have one desktop, and my wife has her laptop, but we don't have any other PC's at this time :/  That's not a big deal, you don't need to have the controller running for the AP to operate.  Only if you're running a captive portal, since the controller hosts it.  Just load th...

Re: Lightweight UTM/traffic analyzer?

Sophos has a free version of their UTM. The original version isn't great at live monitoring, but XG may be better. The general consensus is that XG isn't ready for prime time, but since you don't want much out of it, it may be fine. The other option would be to use Wireshark on Linux transparently. ...

Did you do a clean install or just upgrade Windows? If you upgraded, try uninstalling and reinstalling McAfee. It's quite possible they customize the install to the OS and the upgrade threw it for a loop.

And in Tucson, it's actually pretty similar. Unfortunately it looks like it's finally going to get hot the end of this week, but it's been really weird weather so far this year. We've actually had quite a bit of rain in the last month, and we've still been in the 50's (about 13C) at night and 80's (...

I also have a lot more faith for them to fail gracefully into read only before catastrophic failure. Not that I'd act on that faith. I'm excited for proper 3D NAND server drives to create something of a nearline SSD category.

If you're going to do it, I'd go with 3D NAND, probably 850 Pros. I've considered using them in servers before, but for cache on ZFS arrays. And I would have kept a really close eye on them.

If you really feel you need a gimmicky convertible over something like a T440s, then yeah. This is the time to buy a Thinkpad when money is more important than the latest and greatest. I'm curious about the battery, I thought it only came with an 8 cell. Oh, and I configured it for $1070, and that's...

I rather like my Behringer MS20, which have optical and coax inputs in addition to RCA. I use them at work, and they sound pretty decent for the price. They work well enough as a headphone amp, too. A NUC with Dragonfly BSD? I don't think Mint provides enough of a roadblock to just jumping onto Facebook, unless they already have a very real desire to learn the OS.

**Disclaimer** I have no idea if a NUC would have good hardware support from Dragonfly.

It could be a power issue, too. It looks like it's USB powered with a splitter for extra power from a second port. Are you using two ports, directly to the motherboard without a hub or extension to the front panel?
