Re: Vega is [also] overpriced because AMD has manufacturing problems

AMD already concided being a leader in the gaming market since Maxwell. Their shareholders would never allow product to sold at a loss to retain a trivial mindshare. It would be fiscal suicide. It appears you quickly forgotten how high-end gaming GPUs used to have MSRP around $399-$499 when there w...

Re: Vega is [also] overpriced because AMD has manufacturing problems

If Vega had such thing margins then why bother with making gaming SKUs at all? It would just make more fiscal sense to sell them as Froniter/FireGL SKUs. Vegas are making ~$50-$100 of profit per unit sold, while Nvidia is enjoying 2x to 3x times that much on their gaming SKUs. Nvidia's recent fisca...

Re: Looking for Prosumer mirrorless

My 2 cents for APSC-sized mirrorless. If you want the best IQ and lens quality/selection at any sort of reasonable price point, the Fuji XT2 is hard to beat. However, the Sony a6300/6500 is a great option if you are willing to be a bit more flexible on lenses by using adapters or 3rd party lenses. F...

Re: Vega is [also] overpriced because AMD has manufacturing problems

Probably another one of those multiple contributing factor situations, not just an HBM2 shortage. Especially when there are two different versions of the Vega 64 product as mentioned before . By AMD's own slide deck the Z-height is different between versions. The HBM2 stacks are not flush with the ...

Re: Vega is [also] overpriced because AMD has manufacturing problems

You do understand the relationship between supply and demand, right? :P Vega's HBM2 supply issue has been rehashed repeatedly since (and even before) Vega's launch. The vast majority of the issues with Vega (delays, pricing fiasco, even lackluster performance due to lower-than-expected memory speed/...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

It's edging into the territory where the Vega markup offsets the G-Sync tax... It depends. Maybe for the lower range. But when you get into 4k or 3440x1440p panels, G-sync models are generally considerably more than the delta in price between a 1080 and Vega 64. This is because G-sync selection is ...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

When you factor in the mining situation, how could AMD's GPU share not be diminishing on Steam, a gaming platform? Why are we even debating this? How long has it been since you could even buy mid-high range Radeon GPUs at MSRP? (The 10 people who got Vega at "launch" prices aside). 5 month...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

I think it is probably fair to assume that steam is more likely to request a hardware survey with new hardware and new steam installs. At most, this suggests that the true mix of hardware might be distorted moderately by virtue of underrepresenting older hardware - especially since, as far as I know...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

I don't buy the cash strapped reasoning at all. It is expensive to dual-source chips from two completely unrelated fabs, and that's before sourcing something as complex as HBM2 stacks diffused onto a Vega package. It was already posted in this thread that Hynix has publically stated customers will ...

Just this week, I upgraded from a 10½ year-old Dell UltraSharp 3007WFP with a 16½ year-old 2001FP beside it to a brand new curved Samsung C32HG70 . At the moment, I've got an UltraSharp U2410 in portrait mode beside it. 1800R curvature on a 32" diagonal monitor seems mild enough that I can tol...

Re: Your Impressions of Curved Monitors

There is a pretty ubiquitous sale going on across Canada right now on the Samsung C347F91 - The extremely curved 34" 3440x1440 100Hz freesync quantum dot screen that was part of the Vega bundles. (About $800 USD). And seeing as you can't really buy Vega in Canada right now, I think this is crue...

Re: GIGABYTE AORUS GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition

I've been doing a bit of reading on this as I've just bought an Aorus 1080 Ti as well. The main issue with the bios was that the original F3 version came with a stock power limit of 250W, whereas most oem overclocked cards shipped with default power limits closer to 300W. This is the main difference...

For Vega owners that jumped on 'Free'Sync? You can keep praying for those magic drivers that never come, because you won't have anything decent to upgrade to. What do you have against FreeSync? Sure, there have been a few issues with Polaris, but that's apparently been cleared up in the latest driv...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

Added to that, in a very simplistic sense, the jump from Vega to Navi will be more like pre-RyZen to RyZen. This is because Navi, like RyZen, will be designed to use multiple smaller dies in a single package. This should finally give AMD the fab cost and TDP edge to be competitive with Pascal and V...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

I do; now compare the maximum refresh rate. Still 75Hz on these as on the 1440p 21:9 FreeSync monitors, whereas the 1440p G-Sync monitors are good to 100Hz. Nonsense. The Samsung C34F791, for one, is a 100Hz 3440x1440 Freesync monitor. This was the monitor in the Vega bundles... With Freesync 2, yo...

Re: Vega Meta Analysis

What does 21:9 vs 21:10 matter? This (3840x1600) is the resolution wide screen gaming is headed to. Maybe premature now, but with the next evolution in GPU performance, they'll be commonplace (at least as commonplace as 3440x1440 is now). It's logical. You get the full horizontal resolution of 4k, ...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

For all 500 who managed to grab Vega at the initial MSRP ($500), then it's a decent value proposition relative to the already slightly inflated GTX 1080 and moreso, 1070 prices. But that's just it. As we all know, Vega isn't going for anywhere near initial MSRP so it's kind of a moot point for now (...

Vega 56 isn't even available in Canada. And seeing as Vega 64 is the same price as a 1080 Ti in Canada, I decided to go with one of the latter. With the lack of value and options in G-Sync monitors at the moment, I guess variable refresh will have to wait a bit. Hopefully AMD has their supply issues...

Gigabyte Aorus 1080 Ti $660

Given the lack of impact of the Vega launch on the high end segment pricing, cryptocurrency mining, and the likely impending rise of GDDR5 prices, I think $660 for a quality OEM 1080 Ti is a pretty good deal these days. Includes shipping. Just grabbed one myself. The catch is that it's Mass Drop. Bu...

Between the rising prices of GDDR5, cryptocurrency mining, and the availability of HBM2, there may be no relief in sight for rising CPU prices.
