Can't justify upgrading from the 875K to a 2600K; the performance delta just isn't that great.

Re: Want To Be a Computer Technician

Honestly, it's much more important that you can do something than that you are certified to do something. Agreed. I'm a user support manager for about 1100 users, with 8 techs under my watch across the country. None of them have an A+ certification, and only one of them has a couple MCP tests under...

Re: Tiger Direct < Newegg

TigerDirect has always been a rip-off house. If my memory serves, they were even busted on shipping used/refurbished parts as new back in the day. Newegg isn't perfect, and they've gotten worse since they went public--higher prices, listing prices after rebate instead of before, etc., but I run my f...

Re: Apple: 35% of worldwide PC operating profit

Maybe, but it doesn't bother you that signs point to the products still being overpriced? They're not overpriced; if they were, Apple wouldn't be able to sell them. It's the fundamentals of market behavior in action. If someone perceives the value of an Apple product to be worth that premium, they'...

Re: The TR Clicky Keyboard User Group (TM) Poll!

What sucks for those that prefer ergonomic keyboards is the poor selection of ergo keyboards with mechanical keyswitches - it's rubber dome or bust, mainly - and most of the exceptions cost $500. I agree; would love to have a Unicomp that had the ergonomic split done the way the original Microsoft ...

As for Kyle, his GPU reviews have been irrelevant for years, because their methodology is not comparable with anyone else's, so it's hard to make decisions based off their tests.

Exactly. It's like an alternate universe where logic and objectivity don't exist over there.

Re: Disadvantages of rural living

There are maybe 20 million people who live in Big Cities, and by that I mean cities with over 1 million people. That's just about 5% of the US population. I wouldn't even count Washington, DC as a Big City because a significant part of the 'city' is green, suburban, and distinctly less crowded than...

This statement is ignorant for two reasons: 1) Crime statistics disagree with you, and 2) "everyone and their mother" owning guns doesn't mean that they use them illegally (see point 1). Really? Head on over to the FBI's UCR data and you'll see that NYC's violent crime rate is the same as...

And everyone knows that eventually, your Windows install will become somewhat broken, and hence, a re-install is needed, and chances are that something that used to work will not work the same, if at all. I've not done an in-place reinstallation of Windows since ME. If you're reinstalling on a regu...

No regrets.

It takes longer to navigate to the correct folder level on breadcrumb than to click "up" 1/2/3/4/5 times.

In what universe is that possible? Have you even used the breadcrumb tool?

Then why do you reload the OS once or twice a year? I just don't understand this behavior.

I haven't reloaded an OS (other than for complete rebuilds) since 98SE.

so in win7 it takes at least 10 clicks and a number of less than intuitive menus to share a simple folder. What are you talking about? Once you've setup the Homegroup, it's only two clicks--right click on the folder, left click on either Read or Read/Write. That's pretty intuitive, and pretty damn ...

I think that just going for a memory upgrade and a the HD 4670 is the right move. It will be way under your allotted budget. But at 1440x900, you should be fine. Save the rest of the money for later use. As long as you leave off AA/AF (of keep them low) you will be fine on medium-high settings on t...
