Re: iPhone Pool Test scanner app?

I would be a user of that. Being color-blind, I can't read those worth crap. PS, the Clorox Pool app kinda does that already. It takes a picture for, reads the color, and logs the results so you can look over time. Just saying there might be some competition. I stopped using it...I think because I ...

iPhone Pool Test scanner app?

I have what I would consider a very basic level of computer programming knowledge, but willing and happy to learn more. I have an idea for an app that I would like to make for my phone, but want to see if 1)I'm biting off more than I can chew and 2)if this is something I can do, what are some good r...

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all of the info and insight that has been provided. I guess I'll have to think long and hard about what I really need/want.

I guess its just the thought that I have had my current main monitor for over 10 years so want to make sure I get as much of the current tech as possible so that the next one lasts as long.

True 10-bit vs 8-bit + FRC?

I'm currently looking for a new monitor for my computer so that I can pass off an older one to my son. I would like to get a monitor that will last me a number of years, so I was thinking a 32", 10-bit, HDR, 4K monitor. However, it appears as though almost every monitor is 8-bit + FRC. Would I ...

Re: Display keeps turning off in Windows 10

I had a similar issue at one time with a PC using the onboard Intel Gfx. It worked initially but after a Windows Feature Update, the video output would disappear. I could make the image come back by going into failsafe mode, delete the driver and have it run with the MS standard video driver, howev...

I have tried it with both the most up to date drivers and the windows default drivers. Can’t change the cord as it is integrated into the monitor. It’s an old hand me down lcd.

Display keeps turning off in Windows 10

I recently built myself a new computer and gave my son my old desktop for school use. Since giving it to him it has developed this odd issue where the computer will boot and load windows and then the display will turn off. If I power cycle the monitor, the display will show for less than a second be...

Note that he's upgrading from an i7-870 (Lynnfield, 2009). Either an R7 or an 8700 is going to be light years ahead of what he's living with now. Yeah, its going to be nice to upgrade to a motherboard with full SATA 6.0Gb/s for my SSD's along with the PCI 3.0 x4 M.2 drive I'm looking at in addition...

Side question, I assume you plan to install an add-on GPU, and not rely on the onboard graphics? If so, the Ryzen has been mentioned, have you compared CPU and motherboard prices to see what your best value would be? You are correct. I will be transferring my GTX 1070 to the new system, so a graphi...

Intel i7-8700 vs 8700k

Hello all! I'm looking to build a new computer for myself and have a quick question. Is the performance difference between 8700 and 8700k worth the price difference? I don't plan on overclocking. My usage is some gaming, light video editing and transcoding, and web/office work. For comparison I will...

And now this. 1)How bad does this lower the security of Bitlocker when used with TPM? 2)Is this something that can be fixed with software or is new hardware (TPM module) going to be needed?

Re: TPM for a new system?

I don't think that Bitlocker requires a TPM for a pre-boot passkey. TPM's (Windows paradigm) are usually there to act as your pre-boot passkey, automatically providing the key out of memory to start your boot process (so you don't have to input a key). You can of course ALSO use a pre-boot passkey ...

Re: TPM for a new system?

The whole point of TPM/Bitlocker is to prevent old-school "enthusiasts" like me from using certain Linux-based live CD distros to directly edit the security files and either elevate privilege or to create a new user with admin privilege. Well, my main point was to add a pre-boot passcode ...

Re: TPM for a new system?

A TPM is required for some full disk encryption software (Bitlocker being the most notable). The is also other encryption software out there that does not require a TPM (Veracrypt being the most notable). You would need to provide your chosen motherboard/manufacturer to find a compatible TPM - as t...

What about the BIOS? You might want to try that....I have been running Windows 10 through preview builds and now the RTM release on a laptop, and have 0 shutdown or sleep problems, but I am not running a HP.... What should I check in the BIOS? I didn't have this problem before the Windows 10 update.

Re: AC Adapter for Laptop

Anything rated at more wattage than your existing one is good to go. The problem would be a 45W adapter that probably wouldn't charge when the laptop was running. Most of the universal chargers are 90W just to ensure compatibility with everything. Thats what I thought, but the sales rep at HP's cha...

I need to get a new AC adapter for my laptop and have a question. According to HP's website my adapter is a 65W one. Indexes speed up your access. Why would you want to move it to a slower drive? :o Because you don't want to waste 30% of your SSD's capacity on the index? Edit: Ahh, so the index size is back to tolerable size after a rebuild. Guess the indexer just lost its mind and filled up the disk. At least I ...
