Re: Power brick replacement

As far as I know most power bricks have no surge protection. I've had good luck with 500 joule surge protected power strips from Walmart for less than ten dollars for a two pack.

Really enjoying The Orville on Fox. Kind of a blend of Star Trek and Firefly with a little Kurt Vonnegut tossed into the mix. Kudos to Seth MacFarlane!

It sounds like you need a small diesel fueled generator and a small heat pump hanging out back or down under.

Bad news for your 3850, several years ago F@h cut off everything lower than the 5xxx series. I still have a brand new in the box 4830, grrr.

Re: The Farthest -- Voyager in Space

A little while ago I stood up from my chair and staggered away from the TV with the distinct feeling that data was dripping out of my ears. Zap2it says my local national PBS channel is showing it again today from one PM to three PM EDT (your days and times may vary), but I'm already at too much too ...

The Farthest -- Voyager in Space

Wednesday night I watched and thoroughly enjoyed this new PBS documentary on the Voyager missions! My Zap2it TV listings say it will air tonight (Sunday morning) from two AM until four AM EDT (check your listings if interested). I plan to watch it again. The main doc runs a little over an hour and a...

Re: This G3258 goes to 1.7V

Those of us who lived through Socket A will never forget. Those who didn't will never understand just how hard you had to press down on that screwdriver to get the clip to lock and the concomitant feeling of imminent disaster. The trick was to take some of the bend out of the mounting strap (they w...

Glad you are still here with us. At 45 my brother wasn't so lucky. After he passed out the EMT measured his at 1200 and said anything over 600 is potentially deadly. He never came out of the coma.

Re: Really strange thought of the day.

My earliest electrical experiment involved a ceramic surface mount light socket, a ceramic surface mount switch, and an AC plug. I wired them all in parallel. With the switch off I plugged it into a wall socket and light came on. Humm ... I flipped the switch and all the lights in the room went out....

Back in the high school days we called skunked the extras that were stuffed under the seat and consequently froze. I don't recall the skunk aroma, but they were pretty much undrinkable.

Under clocking and under volting both the CPU and GPU will take a big bite out of power usage. Data shuffling is not a compute intensive workload. IIRC most NAS CPUs run around one GHz.

This is Texas...I think I've met a vegan once? Maybe? Probably had to drive to Austin to find one (yikes, Amarillo to Austin is 1/2 of my drive to TRBBQ). Reminds me of my move from Phoenix, AZ to Fort Lauderdale, FL back in the fall of 1978. I was towing a heavily loaded five by eight Uhaul with e...
