Re: How to remove a heatsink secured with over-torqued screws?

Probably akin to the difference of static friction and kinetic friction. You can cause something to start rotating by pulsing fast and slow movements.

Re: Thinkercon 2018

The event was fabulous. I basically got to spend 4 hours hanging out with and talking to a dozen or so people that I watch on YouTube fairly religiously. It was a very low-key and calm setting and everyone was very down-to-earth and approachable. I would highly recommend the next one for anyone who ...

Edit: The processor in the 418play is the Intel Celeron J3355. Isn't this one of "Intel's newer J parts"? According to ARK, that's a Q3 2016 part, but it can do h.265 decode with quicksync: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video Yes, but perhaps not a 4k h.265 60fps decode (...

Re: Synology Nas advice

I was just looking at Newegg's Black Friday ad and happened across the Qnap 3 Bay TS-328-US Personal Cloud NAS for $189. Is there anything wrong with picking the Qnap brand? Thanks for pointing that out. From the looks of it, the software isn't quite as elegant, it relies on traditional RAID rather...

Re: Synology Nas advice

I have a Synology 211j from a few year ago and I really like it. It's an impressive little NAS box with a lot of really cool features. It's very versatile. Newegg has the 2-drive ds218j on Black Friday for $140. Hard to go wrong at that price. I might even stop saving up for the 4-drive and go with...

Re: RIP Stan Lee

With all the cameos in the Marvell movies they must have enough data to recreate him in every movie going forward if they (and he) wanted to. It would be kind of appropriate for him to live on forever as a rendered, imaginary character. I can imagine him more as a person shown on a TV screen as a m...

To me the only reason to go with the more expensive is if you want to run other apps on it like Plex or Docker or something like that. For just straight NAS uses, go with the cheaper.

Sysprep is what you want to do for option 2. For option 1, I personally stick with the big names like Newegg or Amazon.

Re: 2k/4k monitor recommandation.

4k is 4x the pixels of 1920x1080. Not sure where they get 2k from though. "4k" is a DCI spec that has been blasphemously used to reflect 4x 1080p (3840x2160) which is officially called UHD. 4k is 4096x2160. Period. It drove me nutty when the industry started to use it to mean UHD, but see...

You can always connect two computers directly with an ethernet cable and do the transfer from there. (Cable / twisted pair issues...

If I lived closer to AL I would check it out. Looks interesting and since I home school my children they would enjoy the educational aspects. I'll gladly admit that Drew gets much of his physics/chemistry from many of the content creators that are going to be there. One of the perks of homeschooling.

Ultrawide is better at filling your vision IMHO. It also helps use more of the screen if you do alot of movie watching.

Yeah, I like it. I just found my wife's new desktop (time to retire a Haswell-based Hackintosh that's getting weird), for sure. I'll spring for the 256GB SSD because she tends to use around 150-160GB.

How many display outputs? To me that is limiting from getting a NUC.
