But then why would you use an ICE rather than a gas turbine? The gas turbine gives you even greater efficiency, lower maintenance and wider fuel tolerance with less weight.

I'd love to see a gas turbine. Especially for long-haul trucking. Maybe something like the diesel electric hybrid trains even.

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

I see a few down-sides to plug-in hybrid: *Tou are trading EV range. In the same footprint (hypothecially) you can get 50EV + 300ICE or 300EV. *You lose the mechanical simplicity of the full-electric. You still have to deal with oil changes and other wear items that a pure EV eliminates *I don't kno...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

...Anyway, like ludi said awhile back, there is simply a physical reality here that cannot be surmounted by high hopes and handwaves. Maybe we can work around it, sure, but it is a significant and meaningful disadvantage to EVs that shouldn't just be outright ignored because it's inconvenient. It d...

Same thing as the microwaves. I make sure any microwave I buy has a silent mode. We don't cook more than 5-6 minutes in the microwave, and it's in the kitchen, so I don't need a beep to tell me when it's done.

It's nice to have that option, especially when it is free. https://blogs.harvard.edu/futureoftheinternet/2012/03/21/meme-patrol-when-something-online-is-free-youre-not-the-customer-youre-the-product/ :-) Very true.. Re: For movies on disc (yeah), do you ever register your "digital copy?"

If people don't want to do it, that's their choice. I personally don't understand it. I havne't used the vast majority of mine, but if I'm on my phone or at my computer and just want to watch "that one scene" from Jurassic Park or Pitch Perfect, I can open the Vudu app and be there in abou...

I finally got my pond cleaned out yesterday. The fish don’t know what to do being able to see. I’ll post some pictures.

Always. I’ve got quite a few on my VUDU account that I redeemed. It’s nice to have that as an option.

Re: Lead-free piping!

What makes PEX so good? Is it usable in its pure form, with no additives? It's a lot more flexible than copper, and more resistant to freeze bursting (somewhat important up here in the North). That, and it can be a single run from distribution head to fixture with no intervening joints. The lack of...

Well, for water supply I'd go with either copper or PEX. If it's new construction, PEX is a no-brainer.

Pex is awesome (assuming you use good joints) for homerun setups.

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

Shifter stopped working. It wouldn't shift out of Neutral. Car wouldn't turn on after I turned it off. After some research I isolated it to the shifter cable; I was able to ship by manually rotating the selector on the transmission. I ended up having to take the middle console apart and found what w...

Awesome. I re-did the filter on my ~700g yesterday. I'm hoping that 4" of loose filter foam will clean up the green quickly.

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

I agree with K-L-Waster that the "EV" aspect of the car doesn't really factor into to buy vs lease. I don't like leases at all for personal vehicles. I also think anything more than a 3 year note is very financially risky. How about finding a few year old Leaf? I have a good friend who bou...

Re: How much VRAM for a casual gamer?

For 1080p my opinion is that 4GB is fine. Anything more than that I’d go bigger

This coming from someone who went with the 4200 Ti with slower 128MB RAM back in the day instead of the faster 64MB. I was running a 21” trinitron before upgrading to a 20” Dell Ultrasharp.

Re: AMD Navi / RDNA Topic

As a co-processor. Or maybe like the physX. RayX. Maybe, but the most important part of physX is the software, by far. This is a bit different since performance is trash without the hardware, and since it's already being used to promote GPUs it's probably going to stay that way. I don’t know what I...

Re: 16 COARZ.... Not announced by AMD

That's certainly a nifty trick (using an NVidia GPU for transcoding means less FPS... because the GPU will now have additional work to do. But games really aren't going to be using the 12+ cores of Ryzen. So transcoding with CPU cores is probably better for an overall balanced system). The NVENC en...

Flight Simulator is by far the one I'm looking forward tot he most. I can't wait.

The Avengers looks pretty rough. The description of the stunt doubles is pretty right. Without the voice, this is going to fail. They should have stuck with the SHIELD storyline.

300mhz isn't bad. I guess I need to start shopping for a simple ITX board. Why are those more expensive than some ATX boards. I saw a deal yesterday for an 512GB m.2 + 16GB RAM for $140 combined. Not a bad way to upgrade.
