Re: Two Windows 7 Annoyances

1) The Task Bar refuses to auto-hide. I set it to auto-hide and the programs adjust, but the Task Bar remains defiantly "up." If a program wants your attention (such as if the Firefox downloads window pops up), it will pop up the whole taskbar and the color will change only slightly over ...

Two Windows 7 Annoyances

1) The Task Bar refuses to auto-hide. I set it to auto-hide and the programs adjust, but the Task Bar remains defiantly "up." 2) Pointer speed settings are not remembered from shutdown to shutdown. I go in and set it several ticks to the Fast side of default and the next time I do a full s...

Re: Question About XP Mode

Try that first. If it still won't work, you can download XP Mode from Microsoft's website. Install XP Mode itself first, then install the Virtual PC component. You'll have to reboot next. What you'll get is essentially a complete Windows XP installation in a virtual machine. Thanks for the answers....

Question About XP Mode

I just moved up from 32-bit XP Pro to a new build rig running 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate. There is an image viewing program, VuePrint Pro, that I've been using seemingly forever and it will not install on Win 7 (it wouldn't install on the 32-bit Release Candidate, which I ran on my old rig for testin...

Re: Uninterruptible Power Supply Sizing?

The naive will then recommend 500 and 800 watt supplies to only do what the 350 watt supply is doing We don't do that here. May be he was referring to a different forum. We were one of the first few forums to recommend real usage-based power consumption instead of just looking at labels. We also ha...

Re: Which SSD?

I have an HP DM3 w/ a SP9300. I am trying to maximize my battery life, which has led me to the world of SSDs. I have been researching them, and went on Newegg to compare power consumption. I am a student on a relatively tight budget, but if it is really worth it, then I am willing to splurge for th...

Re: Uninterruptible Power Supply Sizing?

The short answer is that I'd like to do both smooth over glitches and make a clean shut down in case of a total power failure. I'm not looking to ride out a significant length failure (as some of my friends do An answer without numbers explains why some of your replies are vague, misleading, or jus...

Re: Uninterruptible Power Supply Sizing?

Short answer: Buy the biggest one that doesn't break your budget. ;-) Are you just trying to ride out brief glitches and brownouts, or are you trying to keep your system running long enough to finish what you're working on and shut down cleanly in the event of a total power failure? Do you have any...

Re: Free XP imaging software

I have not tried it, but it's been recommended to me. http://clonezilla.org/ Linux-based whole drive imaging. Not a bad program, but not particularly user friendly. The server edition is pretty powerful as a tool to rapidly deploy images to a large number of systems. I use it. My 70 year old Father...

OBTW, the guy who did the assembly for me also gave me an HP LaserJet 2300 that he had lying around. The Supplies Status Page says there are some 7200+ pages worth of toner left in the cartridge. I don't print much, so I think it has no real chance of running out before the cancer gets me (whether t...

ya NIS is exactly what i am looking for but i always heard it is a memory hog and i dont need that i'm pretty sure having 5 programs is one of my memory problems anyways. Looking For Good FREE Benchmarking Software

Just built a new system and I'd like to run it through the paces. The last discussion I can find on this with my meager search skills is from 2004 and I figure the science is advanced a bit since then. Running 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate on an i7-860, 4 GB of DDR3 1600 RAM, MSI P55-GD65 mother board, ...

Re: Critique My Build Please...

To further elaborate on the video card, I was going to go with a 5670 with 1 GB of memory, but the 5750 was only $10 more than the cheapest 5670 with that much memory, so I went with it instead. What's with this obsession with video memory? Buy the GPU you need for performance first, and then match...

Re: Critique My Build Please...

The video card's in kind of a weird place. If you're not playing games, it's probably too much; a cheaper 5-series card will do better. If you are playing games, I'd recommend stepping up to something a bit more powerful. A 5770 is probably the minimum you'll want for DX11, even on a fairly small m...

Re: Critique My Build Please...

Yeah, that list is really worse than useless. There are many listed that are not current, mixed in with ones that are light year difference in quality. You have to work hard to keep this kind of list current. This one is a failure. :( More detailed list ranks the OCZ as a tier 3. While all ranking ...

Re: Critique My Build Please...

OK PSU Critique, 1. You didn't need 700 watt Over-specced for future proofing. 2. The one you bought is not 80 + rated. Hence at low loads(idle) you will be in the 70% efficiency range. = higher power cost and heat generation 3. Suspect quality means less than optimal voltage regulation and ripple ...

Re: Critique My Build Please...

I don't think that Newegg is trying to deliberately deceive their customers or anything. However, newegg reviewers aren't always the most technically inclined people around, even if they like to think of themselves that way. Look at the reviews on cheap power supplies - you'll see plenty of people ...

What would possess you to ask for advice only after the situation's been set in stone? I'm asking seriously, not rhetorically. People do this sometimes, and the reasoning escapes me completely. Unless you're just fishing for "great build d00d" or "congrats on the new system" com...

Re: Critique My Build Please...

What are you doing with it, and what's your budget? The i7 will be close to useless for gaming and most general-purpose desktop stuff compared to an i5 750. The only real distinguishing factor it has is hyperthreading, which is really useful in heavily threaded workloads, but won't help much if you...
