Re: How do you actually run games on high-spec monitors?

I'd be curious to know how you turn off interpolation. I've used dozens of GPUs and screens and never found a way to disable interpolation. I even started at whinge thread about it on here at some point.... The only time I've seen the option to do pure pixel doubling without interpolation blurring ...

Re: Where to buy centering/nub motherboard standoffs

Any reason you are looking for these in particular? I like the idea of the collet standoff, but in the real world there is enough variance in the position of the standoff holes compared to the expansion slot covers and the IO cutout that you'd usually want to do some adjustment - the fact a regular ...

Re: How do you actually run games on high-spec monitors?

One thing that is often overlooked on high-refresh monitors is their improvement to vsync gaming; If you don't have a VRR-capable combination of monitor and GPU, then even a 144Hz monitor is a huge upgrade for a GPU that can't handle high-refresh gaming at that resolution. Lets say your 1060 runs a ...

Re: How do you actually run games on high-spec monitors?

My GTX970 (somewhere in the same ballpark as a GTX1060) is driving a 4K TV just fine. As Waco says, you don't have to run everything at "MAX ULTRA KILLAH SETTINGS". Case in point, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus on my HTPC runs at 15-20fps if I crank absolutely everything up to the maximu...

Re: A1 microSD Necessary for Raspberry Pi ?

I haven't played with a PI in at least three years. It's still Debian, right? The limitation back in those days was FAT32. Typically that means you can have any size card you want, but your minimum cluster sizes might start to get silly with larger cards. IIRC the recommended size was 8GB! TBH, I'd ...

Re: A1 microSD Necessary for Raspberry Pi ?

https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/reviews/micro-sd-cards/ The Pi (like most things running a desktop OS) benefits most from having decent 4K QD1 IOPS. I've used SD cards (Toshiba and Sandisk) that have amazing sequential performance but perform terribly as hard drives for running software when added...

Re: Which piece of hardware do you research the most? Why?

I look a lot at everything since I only build a system once every 6-7 years. If there is one component I scrutinize more than the others, though, it's the power supply. Not all Watts are created equal and a bad PSU that's over stressed can make systems unstable (especially when overclocked) and, in ...

Re: Which piece of hardware do you research the most? Why?

Monitors, definitely. Want one for years now but all I read is, contradictory BS, horrible QA Lottery and obscene pricing for compromise-products. So here I am, still honkin' around with my 8yr old 1080p 60Hz TN panel, b/c so far, the industry has failed to make a product that makes me want to thro...

Re: Der8Auer ripped[2] Cinebench's threads out!

I dunno. If you're in the market for 32 cores, you probably want to use all of them, right? I have €15K approved to buy 8x 32C Threadrippers as soon as they're launched to add to the renderfarm and 1+1+1+1 would be the preference, for sure. It's possible the TR4 socket isn't wired up for that though...

Re: Which piece of hardware do you research the most? Why?

Wow...that's a lot of details. How about you just tell us which ones pass the bar for you and I'll buy that one? None pass the bar for all of those things simultaneously - some of those things are mutually-exclusive. It's just that each item on a listed "spec" is usually useless because i...

How many of you saying "motherboard" are running Linux?

I've found minimal issues with Asus/Asrock/Gigabyte/MSI boards in Windows over the last decade. Maybe that's because I refuse to buy high-end, bleeding edge gamer boards with all the ancilliary tat, and just keep things simple.

Re: Which piece of hardware do you research the most? Why?

I forgot loads . TL:DR - The manufacturer's claims are bull****, you need to find an in-depth, third party review. Cases are definitely hard to gauge from reviews. A review can even make a case seem like it fits the bill and then you get one delivered and discover something disappointing that means ...

Monitors, because their listed/advertised specifications bear little or no resemblance to the actual image quality. Ooooh, that's a good one. I buy them so infrequently, but you're right. Especially something as easy as Freesync range can be difficult to find out if the manufacturer never posts the...

Re: Am I bottlenecked?

Just overclock your 4770K to whatever you can tolerate in terms of heat/noise. 4.2GHz seems likely with zero or minimal voltage bump, and because it's the shoddy TIM from before devils' canyon, you don't want to add much voltage. The reason Coffeelake is the best chip for gaming right now is about 2...

Re: Am I bottlenecked?

I think Ivy to Sandy was mostly about the die shrink with some extra IGP sprinkles. IIRC there wasn't much in terms of IPC between those two generations for anything, let alone gaming. Can't honestly say I ever looked at CPU graphs for D3, W3, and F4. I used vsync on my TV and the 2500K wasn't up to...

Re: Am I bottlenecked?

Ah yes, Diablo3 was another game that started to struggle on my i5 and prompted me to drop in the slower i7.

For a game that normally runs at 300000000000fps, the framerate sure can tank in some situations :P

Re: Am I bottlenecked?

I think at least some of Kretschmer's performance revelation came from doubling his thread count. Kaby lake definitely improves on Ivy bridge in terms of architecture, but even across three generational refreshes the total IPC gain in games is barely 10%. Improving the clockspeed probably brings the...

Re: Am I bottlenecked?

Even at lower resolutions (most of these tests are 1080p) the difference between an old Haswell chip and a 5.1GHz Kaby lake is insignificant:

Pretty sure the 4770K is still fine for gaming, especially if you're running at high details and high resolution where the GPU is almost always the bottleneck.

Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

It is because G-sync for mobile Nvidia GPUs uses VESA’s VRR implementation over DisplayPort. Freesync 1 is the same thing, so any Freesync monitor can do VRR with mobile Nvidia GPUs. And this is why I hate that Nvidia won't do VESA VRR over Displayport (AKA Freesync 1) on desktop. I own a Freesync ...

Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

The thing I find odd is there seems to be a perception out there that NVidia is unique in this regard. It's business 101: sell your products at the price point that allows you to maximize profit. I don't understand that mentality either. It's free-market capitalism 101; The only reason for a compan...
