Re: Modern Macbooks...really worth it?

I would avoid the T2 chip like the plague if possible. As an end user I believe the T2 is a very positive addition to any Mac: - Touch ID - Storage controller that handles on the fly encryption with no impact on performance - Secure Boot (modifiable) - External Boot policy independent of Secure Boo...

On top of that Apple may switch the Mac over to ARM in the not too distant future (Hi Glorious :) ). Such a move would turn any Mac you buy today into a paperweight much faster than you anticipated. Are you advocating people wait? This is a textbook definition of the Osborne effect. How, pray...

Re: Modern Macbooks...really worth it?

OSX macOS * New butterfly keyboard. You should really test one before you buy a current macbook as your main computing device I can’t stress that enough. It is the first thing one should do. I’m keyboard agnostic so I had no issues with the butterfly style keyboard. * New T2 DRM lockout of third pa...

For all that is holy, it is macOS!!!!!

Apple retired both the Mac OS X and OS X names ages ago.

Re: Another Apple Event - new iPads Pros incoming?

Maybe it's Apple holding back iOS, which in turn holds back the hardware. The 2018 iPad Pro is equipped with USB-C yet iOS does not recognize external storage devices. It took Apple 7 years to bring Multitasking to the iPad. Major iOS overhauls don't come along that often. That being said I don't t...

A decade ago I had an iPhone 3G. I got it on a plan that maintained the same monthly fee as the phone it replaced (HTC Touch). For a single person on a lowish income it was affordable.

Re: Another Apple Event - new iPads Pros incoming?

Apple markets its enterprise stuff to non-techies. Chief officer levels. It's born out of the way Apple (no hyperbole) reinvented the smartphone in 2007. The wealthy had to have it, and now they're demanding their IT departments integrate with it. They know you're going to switch over your stuff be...

Re: Another Apple Event - new iPads Pros incoming?

One thing I am not looking forward to with the new 12.9” iPad Pro is the new keyboard. With the previous gen keyboard you can pull the iPad away from the deployed keyboard and leave the keyboard ready to quickly receive the iPad again with a satisfying click. The new keyboard attaches to the back of...

BTW a Mac Mini is a fine hardware dongle A fine hardware dongle indeed. My 2012 2.3GHz quad-core Mac mini was a fairly stout spec. Re: Another Apple Event - new iPads Pros incoming?

The point about the OS holding back the hardware seems pretty clear. The ipad pro is a very nice piece of hardware. It'd be great if I could replace my laptop with it and, say, plug it into a dock to turn it into a proper computer I can do real work on. In theory, there's no real reason you couldn'...

Re: Another Apple Event - new iPads Pros incoming?

Up until now I have firmly believed that iPads and iPhones are well served by Wi-Fi to get content both on and off the device. In the Verge video review a member of their team compared 4K encoding on the new iPad Pro to that of his iMac (no specs given). He said the performance was similar. If 4K ed...
