Re: Who is left

I haven't posted here in years, but here I am. Man, I miss the people here... or at least, the people who used to be here regularly. I feel like I'm calling into a dark canyon, hoping to hear an answer among the echoes. I have to recover two crashed hard drives. I have to build a new PC. I want to g...

Re: Something's different...

Man, I took a few weeks off to see if things would get better, and I come back to... I agree, having a torrent of negativity and expecting them to listen to it every single time is impossible. Crazy stuff. I wish someone would have said something early in the thread to warn about this happening. @TR...

Re: Something's different...

Gosh, the tone of these responses is getting a bit heated. There’s some pretty hurtful things I read up there. Sorry if I offended anyone personally with my question. I genuinely thought it was a logical next question to ask in this process.

Re: Something's different...

There are some who condemn the new design and just leave. On the other extreme there are people who say it’s OK, the new owners care, they’re making changes, so let’s stay. Both opinions have merit. One doesn’t want to throw out the baby with the bath water, but at the same time, I don’t consider th...

Re: Something's different...

I think they recognize it's in their best interests to foster community and get more people to regularly participate. What is the evidence of this? That's why the contributors have stressed the need to integrate the forums into the front page like the old design. These things don't happen overnight...

Re: Something's different...

This might sound kind of harsh, but it's reality: that kind of thinking implies that the TR regular community can keep the site afloat. It can't; TR has been a money-losing proposition for quite a while now, and the writing has been on the wall for a long time now. The new ownership seems more conc...

Re: Something's different...

I was bored this afternoon and read this entire post. The roll out of the new design was a poorly timed mess other than that I see no real reason to complain. Yeah the new owners didn't introduce themselves, but does it really matter ? If they are going to provide funding to improve the site , expa...

I don’t understand how you get all of that from my last paragraph, but I don’t disagree with anything you said. Like I said, I’m hopeful, but you do sound a bit more hopeful than I.

Re: Something's different...

You assume too much. That they are professionals doesn't necessarily mean there was any forethought put into anything; likely quite the opposite. It's very possible that someone with no knowledge of TR was "assigned" the job, and told to do some generic set of tasks. If said person was/is...

Re: Something's different...

PS: Edited my post above after you quoted it. (Why full-quote? Makes reading threads more difficult. :)) Just a guess, but since the web page is so awful now I’ve been only looking on my phone, and it’s tough to edit text with an on-screen keyboard, such as whittling down quotes, so I’ve just been ...

Re: Something's different...

The new owners have made some huge mistakes but at the same time, we're less than a week into the takeover and the real proof will be how they react to the feedback from the writers and the community. I'll be popping back occasionally just to see how progress is going. Unchanged, as it is now, TR i...

Re: Something's different...

Whatever coulda-woulda-shoulda Monday morning quarterbacking is going on now, let’s not forget the present, where the site’s new ownership still hasn’t addressed the community. Maybe they don’t read the site and see how a majority of the complaints mention that one of the biggest problems is lack of...

FWIW, if we had any idea how big of a cluster the "transition" would be, I would stopped promoting subs instantly . I kept what I knew quiet out of respect for Adam and he was caught just as much by surprise on Sunday as the rest of us. How you feel is fully justified and I sincerely apol...

Re: Something's different...

And now my biggest regret is not knowing the situation and subscribe to help keeping this afloat :( I suppose many gerbils are in this boat. I feel like I’m subscribed to a site that I didn’t know. I feel duped. The new management lurked for a while before making its move, and none of us even knew ...

Re: Something's different...

Here's the thing everyone: I'm no Lovecraft expert, but I think the analogy to draw is that we're dealing creatures that are barely aware of our existence. Fortunately, they're actually human, and they can be reasoned with, but we're starting from scratch and an abundance of patience will be requir...

Re: Something's different...

Just woke up one of my computers and saw the old version of the site cached. I screenshot the entire front page so I could remember it. The site currently looks like a pre-alpha test. How does anyone produce work like this for money?

Re: Something's different...

Most of my complaints these days about Wordpress are with crappy plugins doing random crappy things. There's a lot of those, so take note TR staff. Do not assume that widely used plugins will be sufficiently battle tested just because they're widely used. I found this out the hard way many years ag...

Re: Something's different...

I genuinely hate to say it, and I mean no rudeness/ill will whatsoever, but I'm out if this is to be the new UI/design for any length of time. I know a lot changes have gone on behind the scenes over the years, and especially recently, but this feels very much like "nail in the coffin" ki...

Re: Something's different...

If you think about it, the old layout had a top border with stuff (hot threads, etc.) and three main columns (articles/reviews), news, and comments/tweets). This can be replicated with Wordpress and other CMSes out there to some degree. It’ll just take some tweaking.

Re: Something's different...

Suggestion: for reviews, news posts, etc. make more of a distinction between article text and the ‘you may also like’ stuff that follows it. Have the background be a different color, make the text and graphics smaller, etc. so it’s clear that information is extra. Also, page navigation for articles ...

Re: Something's different... (new)

The previous CMS was working just fine, why’d it have to get switched? I mean, we could have just gone back to TR 1.0 from many years ago that was a scrolly blog style format but still had a lot more information density, and it had comments and threads easily accessible at the top. This really does ...

Re: Something's different... (new)

Well this is terrible. All I see on my phone now is a blog-style scrolling list of articles. Where are the top comments and recent forum posts? It’s as if the community is gone from TR, and quite frankly, that’s the strongest part of the site, and always was. I understand if a custom CMS is too much...
