Ugh, what a sick and sad day. Makes one wonder how indicative this stuff is about the state of our nation. Is it moral bankruptcy? Isolation from one's peers brought about from massive social change in a relatively short period? Are there deep underlying trends to all of this stuff instead of random...

Now that is one thing I do not understand. Your product was developed on Linux using the LAMP stack and they asked you to port it to Windows? Now that is just ridiculous. You guys should have simply made it available as a VM based solution and they could have ran that sandboxed on Windows if they so...

Hey Gents! Well let me give you all a quick heads up. A couple of month's ago we snagged six dual socket quad core pizza boxes. Damn, that is a mouthful (8 cores per 1u box). So, you are seeing four of those boxes, plus another 8 way Opteron system going through a little burn in exercise. What can I...

20k for exchange, 7k for 2003/SQL setup? Do you actually use these products or work with them at all? Licensing for Exchange is very reasonable for an enterprise product. For most small/medium businesses the standard editions of all of these products are fine. Lets use a hypothetical 75 PC/Employee ...

The standard version of exchange 2003 isn't much.... $650 range and the cal is about $60 or so with a copy of outlook 2003 included. That isn't that expensive of an enterprise messaging platform. Plus, when SP2 hits, the database limit is bumped from 16gig to 75gig. Alot of folks spend the big bucks...

Glad to see that P3 hardware being put to good use!! It didn't deserve to end up in the trash. If anything we consider that our lasting contribution to the cause. The Bank is joing OC-AMD on the sidelines...

Below is the post we made at Stanford. Guys, it has been fun. Leor, this has to make you a happy man. Stanford really needs to do something about this stuff and hopefully with a few of the larger players (not that we even come close to comparing to How or OC), this will get addressed. If it does, we...

Actually it wasn't me, but somebody I work with. I haven't even looked at the issue to be honest, busy with an OCC audit. That being said, none of the boxes are overclocked and infrastructure hasn't changed here in 6 months. Could be a box flaking out on us, but obviously started very recent.

If they were in the $100 range I would get one for every PC at The Bank. In the $250 range, I could probably outfit about 5 PCs with them, anymore than that and I wouldn't be able to touch them nor would I be willing to do so.

I wasn't under the assumption that QMDs were "unstable" on A64s right now, rather Stanford was stuck with some licensing issues because QMDs are heavily SSE dependent and run checks for SSE2 instruction sets. Right now, at least to my knowledge, no A64 will even pick up a QMD because Stanford is tar...

Well large work units is obviously a variable here as well. Like you mentioned the AMD/Intel choice also plays a big role. We invested heavily an A64 and soon after most of the 600 pointers disappeared and the QMDs hit. Well A64 boxes can't accept QMDs which really dropped our production. We're seei...

Well judging from the responses so far, it appears that you are definitely looking to go the vendor route, so I am assume hardware warranties and service contracts are important. Make sure to add those to the cost of whatever you are planning. HP is typically reasonable, or at least has been for us ...

I love these very generalized posts. How many concurrent sessions are we going to be dealing with on both the database side and the fileserving side and then in total? Well as someone who runs a DL145, I am very pleased with the server. The engineering that went into the box is great and it makes a fine pizza box. Then again, bang for the buck, I was much more pleased with the DL140s we purchased. Hard to go wrong with Dual 2.4 Xeons with HT and 2gigs of ram for $...
