Re: Help me to find out which cable goes where.

If you can't figure it out from logging in to the switch, can you at least aim a webcam at the switch that you can access remotely from your laptop, so you can see the lights as you walk around and unplug/plug each computer? That's exactly what I was thinking. Or Facetime/Skype with a phone aimed a...

Re: TR BBQ XIV - Official Thread (7/15/17 confirmed)

I am still coming, AFAIK. Might be on bike, might just grab a plane. Either way, I can't carry a lot of cargo, so I might have to subsidize someone else's food/drink/fireworks purchase instead. I got your back, as I am coming unless something changes at work, which it might. My brother is always la...

Re: Cannot Index one of my HDDs

I always disable indexing anyway (got into the habit on Windows, and I continue to do so now on Linux). Chews up resources, can get confused (and in certain situations will try to index things it shouldn't like network shares), and IMO those rare occasions where it might be useful generally don't o...

Re: Hey guys!! Need a bit of help!

What monitor(s) are you using now? +++ If you are using something smaller then 24" and less then 1080P, then based on your system specs, I'd go for a bigger/better monitor (4K if possible to last a bit longer), increase ram to 16 or 24GB (depending if you are getting 4 or 8GB sticks) and then ...

Re: New Router Needed (bought - back to drawing board)

Sounds like u need to return that router. When you buy a new one, dont forget to check for all the extra features, not just the speed quote. For instance, we touched on MU-MIMO in this thread, but don't forget beamforming. http://www.howtogeek.com/220774/htg-explains-what-is-beamforming-on-a-wireles...

I tried multiple sets of powerline adapters and a house built in 1993 and it was not good. Just not a consistent connection. Re: Kaby Lake 7700K vs Sandy Bridge 2600K @[H]

I went from a 2700K at 4.6 GHz to a stock (for now) 6700K. At 4K, with a Titan X (M), the difference in games was night and day. I'm mostly on the same page as you, but I can tell you as a GTX 1080 owner with an i7 3820 @ 4.5 GHz, if you have upgraded to one of the more powerful GPUs available in 2...

Re: Unlocked/OC-able CPUs at stock

I am just having fun in the other thread, but thanks for running with this. :) I don't mean to sound like a ass or a jerk, but the poll looks too complicated; the poll should be simpler and maybe start with the year Sandy bridge came out: If you purchased a unlocked CPU since 2011, did you purchase ...

Re: Kaby Lake 7700K vs Sandy Bridge 2600K @[H]

People reading TR & [H], and people buying "k" CPUs are not buying them to run the stock. They are gonna run them at a higher speed. I disagree. The Core i7-7700K is much faster, at stock speed, than any multiplier-locked CPU. If you want performance, it's the one that you're going to...

Re: Kaby Lake 7700K vs Sandy Bridge 2600K @[H]

Further, a 2600k with fast RAM wasn't the common configuration at the time: that was a 2500k and DDR3-1600. I would argue that point. If memory serves, this price difference was around $100 between a 2500k and a 2600k, and I know a lot of people that paid the difference. The 2500k was more affordab...

Re: Kaby Lake 7700K vs Sandy Bridge 2600K @[H]

Just watch out for those frame times... I went from a 2600k (16GB DDR3-2133) to a 7700k (16GB DDR4-3866) and the difference is, subjectively, a lot more significant than average FPS numbers would have you believe. That's with a 980Ti and a normal 60Hz display. Even silly games like Rimworld seem sm...

Re: Ssd as a portable drive, recycle bin and system volume info

Looks like you can do this in one or two steps.

1st, you should make the large fat32 partition, then copy your music over.
JBI is right, download some free live CD/USB, boot from that, and then create the partiion and copy the music.

Re: Ssd as a portable drive, recycle bin and system volume info

To format it FAT32 you'll need to use a non-Windows OS (like the above mentioned Linux live CD), since Windows imposes an arbitrary 32GB limit on the creation (but not use) of FAT32 partitions. Not true my good friend. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc938432.aspx He will just need to d...
