Re: Access my network 100 feet from the house, how do I do it?

cat5 1000baseT or 100BaseT is fine at that distance. I've run normal cat5 outside (stapled to the side of my house), and it ran stable at gig for years. You might have issues of ground differential between the barn and house depending on how your wiring is, but since baseT carries only signal, and n...

There's nothing like the snappiness of a brand new OS install. I just try not to get too attached to a specific install and wipe-and-load every year or so.

Re: SQL or hand-rolled?

I'm late to this thread, but you definitely want to let the database do sorting. Mostly because it's hugely less work for you, the database is really smart at stuff like comparing dates, sorting, etc, and it only take an ORDER BY clause to get it to do it for you. There's no reason why you should ha...

Re: Server maintenance this weekend

Another small thing: Can we change the link of the 'Top discussion topics' from "http://techreport.com/articles.x/14168" to "http://techreport.com/discussion.x/14168"? Chances are if you click on a link talking about discussions, that you want to go to the discussions part of it...

Re: Server maintenance this weekend

Is there any plan to bring back the old query that showed the 10 most recently commented on articles (front-page, not forum)? I really liked that to be able to track comments. Right now, it's almost impossible to keep up with discussions once they have moved down the page. That still exists, it jus...

Re: phpBB 3

I am planning on setting up phpBB for a company to be used as a employee forum. Someone told me that phpBB is notorious for having security issues. Is that true or does it take a lot of work to "lock things down" to prevent any kind of malicious activity? Or could that be more a issue wit...

How come I can't see any of the front page comments once it goes to a second (or more) page. I read them as flat not threaded, and when I click to try and open the second page I get a blank blue & beige template.

Re: phpBB 3

From what I've read the Hot Threads box only shows newly-created threads, not newly-posted-to. That wasn't the intention, but AFAICT that was the result. I was sorting threads by the wrong field. I've changed it to sort by when a thread was posted to, it should be working more like the old one now.

Of course they had to take standard protocols and add enough proprietary stuff so they wouldn't have to worry about the potential of interoperability with non-Microsoft software. Aaaaactualy... That is the way it is suppose to work. As more newer articles come out they will be added to the mix. I dont know at what point an article will drop from the rotation though. The headline rotation is controlled by the editors, not by the code. I think the plan is to have 2-4 items in the rotation a...
