Re: Anyone have more online security tips?

Macrium Reflect has ransomware protection built-in. You can't delete the backup files from a backup disk (or encrypt them or do anything that changes them) outside of Macrium Reflect. That means that neither can a ransomware app do it. This means that your Macrium backups stay unmolested. Yes, you c...

I wanted to like these, but really I'm not impressed. Their ad was almost indecipherable. Poor audio on all the people speaking. Ranging from hollow sounding voices to tinny to muffled, to microphones set to very low gain. The poor quality audio in this ad makes me question if they really know audio...

Re: Have $200, Will Upgrade

If you had only $200, would you: 1. Buy a fancy CPU cooler, OC the nuts off that processor, and hope for the best? 2. New video card? 3. Something else entirely? There's no way $200 will really make a significant difference (just my opinion), so if that's all I had, I'd just make another donation t...

I woke up this morning and my rig had frozen; not sure when that happened, but it was sometime over the night. After a successful warp core restart, it's running now.

According to Extreme OC, Frankie touched 3.5 million yesterday, NICE NICE NICE!

Re: TR Frankenbot 2018; wow, is it that time already?

I should be pulling down about 700K per day with my two 980s and CPU, as long as I don't have a freeze. So far, so good, and I'm trying to check it at least once per day and reboot if I have an issue. I'll check my logs later and see if I'm REALLY pulling that many points. I'll probably need to star...

Re: TR Frankenbot 2018; wow, is it that time already?

Let's try to break 75 million points! It always takes us time to ramp up production. We made 1.3 million points in our first 24 hours of October, which is not too shabby for the first day. But to break 75 Million, we'll need to average 2.5 million each day from here forward. We can probably do it i...

Reminder for all:

The proper spelling is

TRFrankenbot

No spaces, no underscores, and first 3 chars capitalized. And the team number is 2630. If you get that wrong, your numbers will end up creating a new entity with whatever spelling you gave it.

Re: Spectre-Meltdown barricade

TBH, from a security standpoint unless you're a service provider with multiple users running VPSes on shared hardware, Meltdown/Spectre really isn't that big of a deal... Except that every vendor tries to fix it, without regard to the end-user's use-case and even when the performance impact will be...

Hi again. Is there a good source for more information on these types of vulnerabilities?

I'm trying to find out if AMD processors have the exposure and would also like to keep myself up on things as both Intel and AMD release new products in the coming months.

Thank you, I shall investigate this. Even in my 3 year old i7 machine, I'd rather have 6 fast cores than 12 unresponsive cores. Re: Standing desks?

Standing for extra long periods can be rough too. Long stretches of standing can compress the hip and knee joints, and if you don't move around and get the circulation going once in awhile, you'll feel it by the end of the day. I see a similar usage rate to JBI...about 1/4 use it regularly. About 1/...

Nomorobo 19.99/year RoboKiller 24.99/year TrueCaller Free (worth a shot, but then again it's free and you're giving them access to all your calls and contacts so maybe read the TOS thoroughly) Thanks! Re: I need a robocall killer for iOS

Unless I’m expecting a call from a number not on my contact list (like a workman scheduled that day, for example) I don’t pick up numbers I don’t recognize. I get several spam calls per day, but never pick them up. If it’s a legit caller I miss, they’ll leave a message. Yeah...that doesn't help. Ig...

The calls are becoming intolerable. Spoofed to my area code and prefix too. I'd rather not pay, but it looks like I may need to, in order to get the ability to whitelist my contacts list. For t his, most are only a couple bucks per month. ⋅ For iOS, Nomorobo is $2 per month. My VOIP servic...

Anytime you take your car in to somebody but yourself for AC work, it always costs between $1,000 and $1,500. Thank you Captain Ned; I'm reviewing that now. Duct Tape Dude: Thank you, but that's still more than I want to do at this time. Re: Adding a NAS for backups only

I assume he meant <$300 for the bare NAS (without the drive). Going with a 12TB capacity drive does indeed drive $/GB up though, since it's a "flagship" capacity drive that comes with a premium price tag. Starting with a single drive also means you're vulnerable to losing the entire NAS d...

Re: Adding a NAS for backups only

I thought I was clear, but just to be specific: <$300 was for bare NAS only. I'll buy the drive(s) separately. And yes, I might get a 10 TB drive (or 2) instead of a 12. The key for me (and the reason I only mentioned 12 TB drives) was to avoid wasting time considering any devices that could not acc...

Adding a NAS for backups only

Hello: I'd like to add a diskless NAS for onsite backups only. I'd like to keep the price under $300, but will go higher if it really makes sense. I'm also shopping now for a 12TB hard drive, and would like to get one that is likely to still be around in 3-4 months so I can add a second one for mirr...

Watching old Kung Fu episodes now. There was some really good acting in that series, particularly in the 2nd season where I am right now. Also, to keep me from taking life too seriously (and for some much needed contrast), The Dukes of Hazzard. Hey, it's not "reality TV", so don't judge! A...
