Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

Here's what I eventually decided to buy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06ZYR66QB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 So far so good. There are 3 Type-C connectors on it. Two are TB3, and one is USB-3. One TB3 port is taken up by the computer, the other by the Apollo sound inter...

Not fond of the tone-deaf post by "Renee". Not fond of new owners making big changes without even introducing themselves. This is a community. It's something really special. And the owners could end up killing it with their clumsy approach, especially if they come off as being cold and not...

Re: Battletech game coming out

So now it seems I can reply to a forum post. Weird. Well, I've been playing Battletech since late last year. Love it. The city missions are difficult, but in a different way than the others. The key to success at 4 and 5 skull missions is to hide from as many mechs as you can while your lance hits t...

Re: When did this happen? DropBox "free" limits to 3 devices!

Okay, if it was changed in March, that kind of fits. I'll have to reconsider my plans w/Dropbox. At least I have a NAS now which I didn't have when I started an account w/Dropbox. And I got free use from it for what...the last 10 years or so? Not bad. :)

Mass Transit Safety

I mentioned this in one or more of my posts in the "EV to buy or not to buy" thread, and I've been thinking a lot about it. Spinning this off to keep the conversation more organized. You may recall that my opinion in that thread is that mass transit is not safe enough for me to use it. I a...

When did this happen? DropBox "free" limits to 3 devices!

For years I have had 4 devices regularly connected to and updating to/from DropBox. I even use DropBox for my eWallet updates. But today, I noticed that my Laptop either didn't have the desktop folder (or it got uninstalled?), so when I reinstalled DropBox, I got a message that says I have to pay $1...

Re: I've been trying Raxco Perfect Disk for NTFS Defrags

I'm fairly certain that what's presented as "contiguous" to the system isn't even necessarily so internally... This is also true of hard drives. It may look contiguous in your defragger display, but might not be. Or vice-versa. The representation of what's actually on the platters is just...

Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

Yes, I'm kind of thinking that. I've decided to use the Apollo interface plugged directly into the laptop for a week or two, then I'll decide on the TB3 or one of the other options. That will spread out the expenditures a bit and will give me time to use the audio interface, which is the main priori...

Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

I actually have a couple of memory card readers already. I'm thinking about how many devices I will need to pack up (and then keep track of) when it's time to travel. All of these docks already add a power supply and two cables (one for power and one for data) to what I already have today, so reduci...

Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

Of course, I do have one other possible option. Do nothing right away and just run the audio interface from the TB3/Type C port. I do have 3 existing USB 3.x ports on the laptop. Not every decision needs to be made immediately.

Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

Edit : I did buy the TB3-to-TB2 adapter; it should arrive with the interface. So I've had this issue (I also use a laptop - Mac, w/ thunderbolt 3) and the use case you want it's a bit pricey, if you want a built in card reader you may want a CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt Dock (https://www.caldigit....

Re: SSD for laptops/office workstations

I was not thinking of "tertiary", because to me, tertiary is not actually "third in order". I suppose the commonly accepted definition is indeed "third" these days, but when I learned the meaning of tertiary (what, 40+ years ago?), it actually meant, "a combination...

Re: SSD for laptops/office workstations

IVY/Haswell is old! My point is that QLC could STILL outlive those boxes, so why not consider using QLC and spend a bit less money? And I have QLC in my brand new laptop as primary, secondary and thirdary (is that a word?), for a total of 8 TB in the machine (yeah, I'm a glutton like that), so when ...

Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

That's a good point...and I wonder how plugging my non-mac Alienware into a "powered" port might work, like for example if I made a mistake and plugged it into the PD Type C port on the hub. The laptop, being a gaming laptop, already has two power supplies (with two separate power-in ports...

Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

Yeah, the USB / Thunderbolt situation is organically complicated. I still don't completely understand it myself. At least I managed to get a single inexpensive dongle which allows me to connect USB 3, HDMI, and power when I use my work-issued MacBook Pro at home. (Unfortunately it sounds like this ...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

I don't ride the bus because it takes wayyyyyy longer not because of crime. I don't think anyone actually wants to pay the costs of making it feasible. I also said make it less fussy, and in my first post, I said something about increasing packet delivery efficiency. All of that means "make it...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

And after all that, I'd still prefer better public transit options to skip the daily vehicle entirely. Getting cars entirely off the roads is better from an emissions standpoint, and it would likely improve conditions for people who HAVE to use vehicles. Doomed to fail without a lot of additional c...

Re: Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

So I think I found the answer. Well, "an" answer, at least. I need to be searching for "Thunderbolt 3 Dock" or "Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station". Hubs use a USB Type C connector on the PC, but that does not make the hub's own Type C connector ports actually pass Thunderbo...

Help! I'm looking for a Thunderbolt Hub with...

Hello! I wasn't quite sure where to put this question, but since it has to do with a laptop, I decided it could go here for now. I am buying a new audio interface and I want to use it on my laptop. I only have one TB3 port on the laptop, and it's provided via a USB Type-C connection, which I'm alrea...

Re: For movies on disc (yeah), do you ever register your "digital copy?"

I redeem them all so that I can watch them from my Movies Anywhere account. It's really convenient to not have to swap out discs when you don't feel like it, but you always have that physical copy in case something goes wrong. Hah, for me the "digital copy" would be the "in case some...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

I agree with K-L-Waster that the "EV" aspect of the car doesn't really factor into to buy vs lease. I don't like leases at all for personal vehicles. I also think anything more than a 3 year note is very financially risky. How about finding a few year old Leaf? I have a good friend who bo...

For movies on disc (yeah), do you ever register your "digital copy?"

I have Amazon Prime but nothing else. Not Hulu, not Netflix, nothing. So I still buy movies from the cutout bins at Walmart and Best Buy. A lot of them come with a redemption code for a "digital copy" such as for Movies Anywhere, Ultraviolet, and maybe others. Since I buy at pawn shops, ma...

I just had my 6-month cleaning this morning. I'm so glad I didn't read this thread before that appointment, I might have run away from all society, screaming about sideways teeth.

I feel bad for the Ferengi, but one thing's for sure, a Ferengi dentist will never have to look far for work. :P

Thanks for the thoughts on camera GPS. Current camera doesn't have it but the phone and iPad do and it's turned on.

It's just way more convenient to have it than not. I'll just have to remember to strip the geolocation info out of the metadata.

I'm looking at BRU first. Just about to try my first rename for some TV show files... Seriously dude, unless you have an insane convention for TV shows, use Filebot for anything TV or Movies. I'm working on a little project here with photos, videos, music files, and medical/health documents, receipts, and the like, and could really use a tool that can help me quickly rename related files (or folders) with a common name plus a variable mask of some sort that would result in an incrementin...
