Re: spending only $100 a month on food.

I don't think anyone has said this explicitly, but viewing weight loss as something that's always a good thing is a pet peeve of mine. I'm just as heavy now as I ever have been, but I'm not at all out of shape. Two completely different things. I would like to lose some fat and gain some muscle. Tha...

Re: spending only $100 a month on food.

...I can see it for the occasional meal, but not 3, 2, or even 1 meal a day - it just takes too much time... I save time by cooking multiple meals at once. I can cook a whole mess of chicken, fish, steak, or turkey, on an electric, charcoal, or gas grill (or all three if I'm pressed for time) and a...

...the so called problem with grains is only a problem with people with IBS, Celiac disease, and other issues with Gluten. That is true, yes. But it's also a part of the controversy. Some say that grains can aggravate existing conditions, which I believe is demonstrably true by way of millions of p...

Re: spending only $100 a month on food.

A couple items... Variety : Assuming the number of daily meals is 3, most humans can eat pretty much the same things each day for 2 meals. But in order to stay on any change of diet, we need variety in at least 1 meal. Whether that is breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you'll be more successful if you mix...

Re: Help! I'm from an alternate universe!

In my universe, we have CompUSA, Radio Shack, and Circuit City stores. But I think Circuit City is on its way out, because they just started playing a Cars song in their television advertisements. I think they're trying to make people forget that their prices are too high and they put way too much p...

Re: I might be ready to buy a new gaming laptop

Would it be worthwhile to wait for the eighth generation i7 to become available? I'm thinking yes, because this opens up options for more cores. That's available now in Sager models, but not yet in Eurocom (not as of about a week ago, anyway). I'm also hoping that manufacturers such as Sager and Eur...

I'm not sure if this has been discussed previously, but do we know if the lifespan of GPUs will be affected by them having run 24x7 at full load in a mining rig for months? Particularly the ones that use smaller process nodes, due to migration? Would it be a significant risk to pick up GPUs with a ...

Re: How to find the best drives

With maybe one 1TB exception somewhere, I only use hard drives now for backups. Active data, OS, and applications are only on SSDs now. I do a restore of something here or there about once every 18 months or so. Given this, if a spinning hard drive is going to fail, it's most likely going to do that...

Re: How bad is Windows 10 Really?

Classic Shell itself works in Win 10 and fixes Windows Explorer too. However there's so much screen real estate these days that you could just put the icons on the desktop and use it like Windows 3.1 or Palm OS I still use Fences, by Stardock to manage my desktop icons. Works very well and is easy ...

Re: How bad is Windows 10 Really?

Windows 10 is the best, most reliable version of Windows to date. At home, I use classic shell. At work, I don't. It's pretty much a non-issue anymore. Crashes are very few. I don't view security and privacy concerns to be major exposures. But beyond that, major corporations are forcing upgrades amo...

Re: Video card prices

The problem with gimping cards planned for use by mining applications is that it's anything but entrepreneurial. It games the card market because it tries to pick winners and losers, based on what the customer wants to do (or is doing) with equipment that's supposedly "general purpose" in ...

Wow, $1K for any GPU is just nuts.

I want to upgrade my GTX 980s to 1080 TIs, but it's just not gonna happen at these prices.

If this continues, I see competition heating up. Prices will come down, but probably not anytime soon.

New Netgear Router...Config Questions

Hello: I recently installed a new Netgear R7800 wireless router, and I need some advice on a few settings... 1. IPV6 appears to be disabled. There are a bunch of possible settings...auto detect, auto config, 6-to-4 tunnel, and more. For years now, I've been under the impression that our IPV4 limitat...

Re: I might be ready to buy a new gaming laptop

Good questions. I'm seeking a laptop because I travel, sometimes 4 or 5 times in a year. An SFF with external monitor won't do. I'll cut back on my 3 or 4 bay requirement if I can get more SSD capacity into one or two 2.5" bays. But I don't think I can compromise down to a single 2.5" bay;...

This topic occasionally comes up and then I never really pursue full understanding. But now that I'm more and more thinking of getting a new laptop, I think this is a good time to dig deeper. If I load a new laptop up with all SSDs (M.2 and 2.5", or a combination thereof) and I also want to tur...

Re: I might be ready to buy a new gaming laptop

Yes, I'm curious why you need three 2.5" bays. They just take up too much space inside a laptop to be offered in multiple configurations. I want to put in about 5-6 TB of storage. Bare-minimum is 4TB, but then that'll be mostly soaked up by my current drive contents. I do realize that M.2 is t...

But it's not for games, mostly. Anyway, here are my needs: * 17" Screen. 4K would be nice. * Gen 8 i7; Gen 7 ok if other criteria met, price is more reasonable, and/or laptop is easier to self-service * capacity for up to 32 or 64 GB RAM (does not need to be fully populated to start) * One SSD ...

I baked bread and cooked two turkeys yesterday. So far, it looks to have very l...
