i7 980x needs a SECOND i7 to update BIOS?

My 980x is on order. I know that all motherboards need a new BIOS to support it.. my motherboard is a Asus P6T Revolution workstation board and I'm sure it will. But when you finally get the 980x in hand, how can you flash the BIOS without actually using the 980x to boot? Will motherboards just work...

Advice on router/NAS/wireless

I have a nice little home network, about 6 machines. I'm using wired 100mB wired ethernet to 4 boxes and wireless B/G to others like laptops and iPhone. I use a standard cable modem leading to a classic 2005 era linksys WRT54G router/wireless G. It all works great. But.. it's 2010 and I'm starting t...

@Uber.. wow, excellent pointer (from the Man himself!). That's a tiny and restrictive case, but that of course is the fine niche I'm aiming for. The Silverstone site is rather annoying to navigate with Flash everywhere, but it may be that you can use DUAL double-width cards which would be rather inc...

Small system with double-slot GPU

I need to build a new system with two requirements. It needs to be pretty small, and it needs to hold a PCIEx16 double-wide graphics card like the Nvidia 280GTX. Ideally there's a Shuttle design that I could just get, but it seems that the space inside, even for the models with 2 PCIE slots, isn't q...

Good Athlon X2 prebuilt system vendor?

A friend is looking for a new Athlon X2 system (as a 3D rendering workstation), but isn't a hacker so he just wants to plunk down cash and get a system. I can't give him good advice (since I built my own system myself from parts). So what's a good source of a prebuilt system? He's looking for probab...

After way too much research, I decided on my new system. It will be my 10-hour-a-day work system for the next 2 years or more. It will be used for 3D rendering, software development, and probably too much web surfing. Upgrading from a 1GB RAM, NF2, 2.4GHz Barton with an ATI 8500. It was a Really Hot...

I haven't seen any SLI boards that follow the lane layout you describe. Most typically, I've seen this: 16X 1X 1X 2X or in SLI mode: 8X 1X 1X 8X With the various slots physically moved around a little. The NF4s have a total of 20 PCIe lanes to spend, which is typical of the PCIe chipsets we've seen...

Half multipliers are NOT supported by the Athlon64. But many motherboards set up their BIOS to EMULATE the half-multiplier by boosting the FSB appropriately to get the CPU to the same frequency as if there was a half-multiplier. That's not quite the same as a true CPU half-multiplier, since it means...

Seen on AMD's price list, so release is likely Real Soon Now. It might even be quietly slipstream released already, but that's speculation. Time to check Akihabara I guess..
