But the E4300 is quicker clock-for-clock, it's just a matter of how much.

I don't have the E4300 rig to hand and the only comparable benchmark score I have is Super Pi. It's a fun test but I try not to give the results too much credibility.

Update: Well all my plans went completely down the tubes. I ended up buying a normal case, albeit aluminium. Not exactly what I wanted, but it was too cheap to refuse: £25, which is about half the price of a Centurion 541 over here. It's an Aplus Roma and weighs almost nothing. I'm quite happy; the ...

All rigs chug during the CPU tests  It's painful to watch isn't it? I read somewhere that the pure CPU tests don't actually contribute to the overall score in 05, but they do in 06. Not sure if that's true or not though. My motherboard (Asrock 775Dual-VSTA) is a weird hybrid board that has a f...

Thanks! That’s interesting. I get about 10600 and I assumed yours would be higher since you’re not limited to PCI-E 4x. Were you using any AA or AF? Surely the CPU can’t make that much difference.

I didn't realise they used different southbridges. The only difference I can see what would affect me is the Gigabyte's extra two SATA ports. Having said that, the Asus' 4 would probably suffice so it's down to price. At the moment the P5K-VM is a bit more expensive, but isn't widely available in th...

Thanks! You confirmed my fears about the 965G chipset. Unfortunately the only G33 board I can find at the moment is that Gigabyte one. Asus are supposed to be releasing one soon though. I also just noticed that the Gigabyte one doesn't have the option of running the memory 1:1 with the FSB, which co...

775 mATX upgrade

Hi guys. It’s about time for me to complete my gradual upgrade with a shiny new motherboard and an even shinier new case. I currently have: Asrock 775 Dual-VSTA E6600 X1950XT 256MB (PCI-E) 2GB Kingston Value PC2-4200 I seem to be transporting the rig about a lot more than I had originally planned so...

I feel your pain, Brother Klyith. My KDS 19" CRT is starting to emit a high-high-high pitched squealing sound that when my wife's eMac made that sound, it had to go to Apple for warranty repair. This CRT is six years old, so no warranty work - probably replacement time. I had an old CRT (an LG...

Kingston 2GB (2x1GB Kit) DDR2 533MHz/PC2-4200 Non-ECC CL4 £49.82 It’s not going to break any overclocking records but 2GB of RAM for under £50 is ridiculous and if you pay through google checkout then you get another £10 off! 2GB for just under £40 :o I got some in the post this morning :D It’s chu...

Exif information is so useful, it really shouldn't be stripped unless you request it be. Agreed. There is an option to not display the EXIF data at all, not even on the page. That's off by default. I can't find an option to leave it on the images themselves. Maybe Pro users have other options avail...

Microsoft wireless optical laptop mouse.

And finally, not technical but still kinda cool, a “Back, Sack & Crack hair care kit”.

The Palit branded ones are supposed to be re-named Gainward Golden Samples and overclock quite nicely. I thin...

Nullvoid is right, it's clever marketing from XFX. The 6800XT core that card is based on only has 8 open pipelines. Also, according to the specifications here it only has a 128bit memory bus. That 7600GS does seem the better option. I *might* be selling my XFX 6800GT in the not-too-distant future if...

Remember that AsRock is cheap. RAM is way more expensive now. So getting an AsRock as an intermediate solution allows you to slow move to DDR2 and PCIe x16 during the transition, at times of your own choosing and step by step. If you don't have a big chunk of money saved up, then what you can do is...

Your motherboard’s temperature sensor is probably off, it’s not uncommon. There might even be BIOS update that’ll fix it. Certainly have a look before tearing the poor thing apart again. BTW, speedfan is a nice utility for reporting temperatures. As of version 4.29 it even reads the on-die thermal s...
