Re: Goodbye TR, it was a great run

Boy, I remember the first time I visited TR back in 2002. I was eager to build my first gaming PC and I stumbled here. Armed with Wasson's reviews I built. Even after that, I came back for more. For over 15 years, I visited the site 6 to 8 times a day. Today I revisited the site for the first time t...

Re: TR Wikipedia article flagged for deletion

Still with a Geforce 6800GT? :) lol, haven't updated my signature. Still have that old setup and use it as a Windows 98 retro gaming machine. Though these numbers will say my X800 XL was generally neck and neck with your 6800GT , I seem to remember the 6800GT coming out on top more often. Maybe it ...

Re: TR Wikipedia article flagged for deletion

I came out of TR Forum AND Wikipedia retirement to correct the childish paragraph related to the redesign. Now just reads: "On July 7, 2019, coinciding with the release of AMD's Ryzen 3 CPUs and Navi GPUs, a site redesign was launched moving from the Tech Report's former custom CMS and function...

I think it's that technology has made certain aspects of our lives so easy and/or simplistic that we then take those same aspects for granted and expect to be able to do more and more "simple" things as a result. It seems like the more things become easy the more we try and do in one sitting and get...

MCE2K5 requires one standard def hardware-encoding TV tuner to be present to enable the TV watching/recording/etc features. After you meet the minimums you can do all your TV watching via firewire/OTA HD/whatever. VistaMCE does not, specifically because some folks wanted to do OTA HD but did not wa...

Well crap, I just read at AVS Forum that Windows MCE requires a separate analog TV tuner to be installed before you can use HDTV add in cards. WTF? That sucks. Untrue, maybe its different in MCE 2005 (I use Vista MCE) but my both analog and digital functions on my card work, although I don't ...

I have said it before and I'll say it again. Dvico FusionHDTV5 FTW!!!!! Mind the you you'll need the ATSC version in particular, and as for antenna, assuming all your DTV stations are already UHF (or will be in 2009) then it would be wise to get a specialised UHF antenna then a run of the mill roof ...

There are few defrag apps for vista yes, but why even bother buying them? Do you honestly see any difference between the built-in windows defragger and commercial apps?

I'm getting a free copy of both through some connections, so I'll probably run Vista Ultimate x86 unless everything I have has x64 drivers. I really see no benefeit, so time will tell. It would have been nicer if they had designed Vista so that both x86 and x64 versions were installed together. Dur...

Grinding/Pitched Noise Coming From Arctic Cooling NVSilencer

Howdy Everyone, for awhile now the NVSilencer I installed on my GeForce 6800GT has been making a harsh noise, it sounds as if the fan is off balance and grinding the plastic. It stop grinding and working normally if I repeatedly tap the center of the fan itself. Unfortunately I did the stupid thing ...

Even so, I still wouldn't bat an eyelash at a USB tv tuner, overhead is a moot point these days when it comes to USB... Unless you're trying to record the video feed. You could possibly end up with dropped frames with USB. I guess it all depends on how fussy you are. -SF I think that depends if the...

I could be wrong but I thought at least USB 2.0 was faster than firewire now? I heard that somewhere. Any truth? Yes! USB 2.0 is 480Mbps, firewire/1394a is 400Mbps but for some reason in benchmarks they seem to be the same overall speed and USB has a higher CPU hit (percentage of usage). Even so, I...
