Re: Synology Nas advice

I'm running a 415play at home. Have plex on it, streaming my blu-ray rips to Xbox One S and PS4. Also running their cloudstation app to backup our phone photos and streaming my CD rips. I've gone from 3x2TB to 4x4TB to 4x10TB drives so capacity hasn't been an issue. I haven't had any troubles with t...

I'd add ASRock Rack to that list of vendors to check out. It's their "workstation" brand. Although as has been pointed out some of their regular boards should work with it as well. I've been having real good luck with ASRock recently, and I'm actually looking at one of their Rack branded b...

It's an interesting, if philosophical, point right? At what point is it a new computer such that MS would be justified in saying I need to get a new license? If I replace the CPU/Mobo/RAM, the only thing left of the original computer that the original Windows 7 was installed on will be the OS SSD (...

I don't want to get involved in the rest of the Win10 debate going on here, but getting WAY back to the original post, @ludi - yes, I've found this as well, always with old Dell systems. I've tried with other machines and it hasn't worked. Also hadn't been able to do it with a few old retail Win7 ke...

Neat! MSI had a dual slot, low profile RX 460 2GB card for a while. I bought one on ebay but the seller never shipped. :( This is the MSI 560 for anyone wondering ($170): https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137308 Zotac's low profile 1050ti is currently sitting at $230: https:/...

Re: Best low profile video cards available (March 2018)

The top slot looks like an x4 slot, with an open end, so it can physically fit cards that require x8 or x16 length. You'll have less bandwidth than the x16 slot could provide, though most tests have shown the performance difference is negligible - the main question would be whether or not the slot c...

Re: Best low profile video cards available (March 2018)

Those are really good temperatures for a single slot 1050ti, thanks for the info @pilapila3! @Erniesone yes, the card only uses a PCI express x4 slot's worth of connection for data but it physically requires an x16 slot (full length) to connect. The notebookcheck phrasing is confusing, possibly due ...

Re: Best low profile video cards available (March 2018)

I agree with @Concupiscence. If a 1030 with 2GB of RAM is going to be too slow due to framebuffer issues, a 730 or 710 with even less memory is going to be even slower. I don't think there are any 1050ti cards that will fit in the server @RobbieTheK is using, though. The limitation is single slot, w...

NVIDIA has binary drivers for the Pascal-based cards which you can download and install yourself: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/130646/en-us Or, if your distro/version has a proprietary drivers repository, you can (and probably should) install from there. For what you are doing I...

Re: Best low profile video cards available (January 2018)

The GT 1030 is Pascal based so it ought to support the standard you need, though "compute 3.0" is a bit generic. Assuming you're talking about CUDA there, which case you'll be fine - the GT 1030 supports version 6.1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUDA#GPUs_supported If there's a different ...

I was just looking over the Phoronix articles last night, was kind of surprised to see the issues to be honest. I figured they'd be tapping in to existing Vega support introduced in kernel 4.12 and would have it mostly sorted (or at least not have all of the various system hang issues). I'm planning...

Price? Heard this before. It doesn't really hold up IMO. If you are buying 4x 8TB WD Red drives at $250 each, you're looking at $1450 + a few clicks setup time for the Synology solution or $1200 + building a PC + installing software (might cost money) + longer setup time for a roll-your-own. Re: AMD 400 series chipset

They did show a slide saying the 400 series chipsets would be lower power, so I'm assuming, if nothing else, there's a respin of some sort happening there. Additional PCIe lanes would be a nice add, though. Probably shouldn't expect PCIe 4.0 until the next generation though.

Well. Did anyone happen to notice that 4GB 1050ti and RX560 cards are starting to sell for over $200? The miners have started reaching down to the budget cards, it seems. Not really thrilled about this. Now anyone who wants to buy a new video card, even a "cheap" one, for actually playing ...

Re: The Ryzen 2200G and Ryzen 5 2400G CPUs

Doesn't that just negate the advantage of having an SSD in the first place? All of the regularly accessed user files are still sitting on a slow disk. The OS might boot faster but if the complaint is that the system is slow, either it will still be "too slow" trying to open files or there ...

Re: The Ryzen 2200G and Ryzen 5 2400G CPUs

The Ryzen 5 2400G is very likely going to be in my next HTPC build - very light gaming (indie games) and a bit of encoding occasionally. I assume these APUs will have VCE 4.0 like other Vega GPUs, compared to VCE 3.4 in Polaris. I think for casual type gaming these things will be great, and I kept ...

This is not theory, I am telling you about my own lying eyes. I totally agree. I wonder what the fallout of this is going to be on the PC gaming industry. There are a lot of high-powered cards that could eventually just be sitting around after/if the mining craze dies off. People said "when the mining craze dies off" before the RX 500 series refresh and that still h...

Well, it would be slower, for sure. But how much slower depends on which GT 630 it is. There were at least four different variants: 1 Fermi with 96 CUs and 128-bit GDDR3 (25gb/s) 2 Fermi with 96 CUs and 128-bit GDDR5 (50gb/s) 3 Kepler with 192 CUs and 128-bit GDDR3 (25gb/s) 4 Kepler with 384 CUs and...

Re: Best low profile video cards available (July 2017)

Your best option would be finding a GM107-based Quadro K1200 if that's what you're looking for. Performance will be about the same as a GTX 750 (non-ti). You could also look at the GP107-based Quadro P1000, which is basically a single slot GTX 1050 with slightly lower GPU clock and much lower mem cl...
