Re: Home-Grown Chinese Supercomputer #1 in Top 500

All your points are quite valid, and I even noticed a few caveats in the press release. One of the issues is that the Top 500 rankings are just based off of LinPack, and we all know that LinPack can be gamed for fun and profit. As for your analysis of the memory controller layout, the article impli...

Re: Careers and Pathways in the Tech Industry

With the degree that you are getting and supply chain experience, you sound like a great fit for a product manager. There are a a good amount of peripheral makers out there as well as System Integrators to get started with. If you get into a small company, you probably won't get very good pay and th...

Re: Stumped: Intel Smart Response Missing

I would go into the raid bios (CTRL+I) and see if the options for it are there.

Also make sure you have the latest BIOS and the latest RST drives. When I was dealing with it when it was brand new it was very picky if the Sata firmware (updated with the bios) didn't match with the driver version.

Asus's web site has it Here. For mine though I've used their built in updater and it seems to work fine especially for the bios update. (I never double checked that it actually updated the video driver though)

Re: Help identifying possible faulty CPU

You need to put the memory from the "other" system into the one you are having trouble with and run prime95 and see what results you get.

Memtest can't stress test the memory, it can only check for faults it finds for in the memory itself. The memory could be failing under heavy load.

Unless you have a 8.1 key you can't do a fresh install, it will only allow you to upgrade from the store to 8.1

Re: Server 2008 R2 - Random Shutdowns

There has to be more errors and information in the error log if the system is shutting down and coming back up. When you mean shut down is it crashing or does it go through the shutdown process? The same time seems like something is making it shutdown, maybe Acronis is telling the system to turn off...

Re: Half of 16 GB Memory Not Recognized

Try giving the memory a little more voltage if not already at 1.65 or give the QPI/DRAM voltage a little boost.
When you have 4 sticks everything can need a little more juice.
Also just trying changing the sticks around in different slots, that can randomly help as well.

Re: Does the DFI Ultra-D nForce4 need a nvidia gpu?

The chipset of the board doesn't really have anything to do with that it's all up to the video card itself and it's drivers to run the HDMI. When you install the ATI drivers it will also install the HDMI audio driver so the audio will pass through the card as well.

Just saw this on Gizmodo

but there is a small update coming that will fix the problem where you can't re-license an XBLA game if your console went in for repairs and you got a new one. Dave Zatz says that a major UI overhall could be coming at the end of the year too.

I'd recommend to wait and upgrade the whole system since the 3400+ is on the low end side of things right now. If you can't wait a little while longer, I'd just pick up an 8600gt, which can be had for $50 AR at a few places. I don't know if you'd still need a new PSU with that or not? The 8600gt sho...

If you are going to spend that much on the computer, I wouldn't spend less that $500 on a monitor, unless of course you find a really good deal :)

BIOSTAR GeForce 6200LE You can do a lot better than that for $130. Try an HD3850 or a 9600GT, if you're a gamer, or a motherboard with nice integrated graphics like the ones JustAnEngineer suggested, if you're not. The prices are below the product, I read it that way first too, until I looked at Ne...
