Re: How to remove old window xp?

Ha ha! I would do that too! I was wondering when someone would suggest it. I totally agree. Be absolutely sure you've got everything you want out of your unwanted Windows partition. Then be sure you are in the Windows partition you DO want, running the XP that you DO want. Go to Administrative Tools...

So, you're suggesting a board that could take a 954, but equipped with a 754? (I'll check out your specifics in the morning. Thanks again.)

Yes, it makes good sense, plus it's easier to find the money. Amphibem, you're right--I would LIKE to replace my old monitor, but I don't HAVE to. If I see a really nice cores system that takes everything $$ I can find, then, no monitor. Or, if I CAN squeeze out about $250 for a monitor, I'll get a ...

Wintermane's logic is not to be taken lightly. :-? I'll have to give that a lot of good thought. Yes, I was thinking of something around that $1500-$1800 mark. Wintermane's reasoning might make things more cost-efficient, though. There is one very nice store here, just two guys who build computers; ...

Thanks, usaComp, but I was stymied on that site by a blinking eye ad. Firefox is so darned slow on my slow system that AdBlock takes too long to activate; meantime the eyeblink ad is quickly ruining my mood. So I don't go to sites like that; they must know they drive people away. Never have u...

I'm still reading up on things. I was very happy to go with the A64, which is quite expensive enough: the A64 3200+ L2 Cache 1 MB Socket 754 with 1600 FSB is Cdn$420 here. Only problem is, I read that AMD will stop production of the singles in mid-2005, just about as soon as I've paid for my beast. ...

At the moment I'm thinking the A64 s754 3200+ might be better for me than the 3200. Here they sell for Canadian $219 and $279. I think the 3200+ just might last longer into the future...? I assume I should stay with s754, because I imagine dual-channel is extremely expensive. OTOH, my misadventures ...

Well, thanks for that. Okay, I'm going to start my comparisons there, and follow your A64 suggestion. You mention "with a motherboard" and I am wondering whether the MB sort of comes along for the ride, or whether there are also lots of comparisons I should be making independently with motherboards.

Building from Scratch

I've been reading the "Best CPU" thread, but I don't want to mess it up for the original person, so I thought I'd start my own. I asked some questions here some time ago. So far, my project is just a dream. That means, I really shall do it when I find the money. Now I'm hoping that will be in the fi...

Spybot 1.3 is no ordinary upgrade. The new 1.3, when run on advanced mode, is very powerful, and greatly expanded in its abilities. I use both Spybot and Ad-Aware, and they have never been so different as they are now. You can also get a list of thousands of bad guys, all automatically banned from y...

Multi-Boot including Pure DOS 6.2 and Windows XP-SP2 ?

Here's a question for elderly experts. (Just kidding). I have 2 HDDs, a 30- and an 80-gig. I have been running XP Pro-SP2. It's located on my Primary Master Partition 1 (C: ), and it's in NTFS. I want to accomplish 2 things: -- I want to put ME back in the system. But ME won't install yet, bec...

Plus I have a bit of a head start--I'm already running XP Pro SP-1. That got lost back aways, when I was wondering about going backwards to ME, which I still have on CD. Tonight I'll dream about computers. :-) Tomorrow you won't hear from me, 'cuz I'm taking a 15-year-old friend up the mountains, hi...

Yup, that sure looks like what I was seeing this afternoon. I forgot to mention the whole motherboard is colored purple! At this moment, I'm very happy with having all this input and info about my system. It still rests on maybe doing nothing until I can afford to build my own, and to make something...

I pulled a few more specs from SiSandra. Apologies for the unnecessary ones--I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing here. Maybe this info will iron out a few persistent questions: Processor Model: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 1.70GHz Speed: 1.70GHz Performance Rating: PR1870 (estimated) Type: Standard L...

Well, to answer this question, I took everything apart. I had the case up on the kitchen counter--it was dry, no other place--and I had a big flashlight, and I looked and looked...and found very little. Lots of Made in China things, lots of Intel stickers. I found white bold lettering, which had a n...

I was told this: This is what the guys at the store suggest, and their prices: -- Yes, the xp 2500+ is faster than cel 1.7. -- But I'd need to change motherboard and memory as well. -- Suggested components and prices: {NOTE--in Canadian dol...

Player Hater, I think you're right. Actually, I bought the computer from an excellent little shop with two great guys running the whole thing and building everything. Thanks, guys. Dragmor, I'm following what you say, and I've figured out that FSB is Front Side Bus (and not Financial Services Board), plus I read about Celeron's half-sized cache. It sounds pretty bad, really. Should I be angry with a company that purposefully offered the 1.7 number, knowing people...

Celeron 1.7 no-$$ - Possible Improvements??

I bought my first computer in the 1980s, but I'm only an end-user who's tweaked my way a little up the ladder but not much compared with you guys. I have been working very hard for a whole year trying to get my Celeron 1.7 to ZAP! from one screen to another, instead of taking 1-3 secs. on average, l...
