A few points.... Apple is not interested in attacking windows head on. They're starting to offer a complete alternative based on partnership with unix community. OS X is a really teriffic unix for the desktop. It makes a lot of sense partnered with Linux or BSD servers. The move to x86 makes this ev...

The WD and Seagate drives are both good. I've seen bad drives from both companies, but nothing extrodinary like the IBM deathstar. Both are good about honoring the warranty. In my opinion, the Seagates are of slightly higher quality. Seagate gets all of the details right and their experience making ...

I looked at the srat.c file in Linux 2.6 and it's very informative. It looks like SRAT info is queried much like ACPI info. Then it's up to the OS to match memory with CPUs and schedule process affinity and memory allocations thusly. It's actually a pretty simple system, but effective. Judging from ...

SRAT!

So the latest Opteron article at Ace's briefly mentions SRAT (System Resource Allocation Table). This is the heretofore mysterious mechanism AMD is using to supply NUMA info to the operating system. This is a winderful thing indeed and I was hoping someone could supply some info on the topic as I fi...

Install Gentoo. It's the most no-nonsense distro that shows a healthy respect for the traditions of the Unix world. Red Hate and other RPM based distros have wretched binary package management. The Gentoo install is painful, but if you can't accomplish it, you probably shouldn't be using Linux. You ...

The G450 is a great card for FreeBSD and Linux with extremely stable drivers. It is my first recommendation. The ATI drivers were awful in FreeBSD, but have made steady improvements. I believe they are pretty darn good now. The nvidia drivers are extremely fast, but stability is not up to par with t...

You sound like you already know your way around unix so you'll probably be much happier with FreeBSD. FreeBSD is much more professional and consistent than any of the Linux distros. Redhat and the like are unbearable with constant updates via the dreaded RPM system and associated "fun with dependenc...

I'm a big fan of windowmaker on my FreeBSD box. It has an interface similar to openstep. It looks good and runs very fast. Gnome and KDE are both pretty worthless as WMs in my opinion. Also check out an app called GKrellM. It's the best GUI system monitor around and skinnable to match whatever WM yo...

Darwin is the open source component of OS X based off of the FreeBSD 3.x branch. Many features of 4.x have now been backported to Darwin. Darwin has obviously been ported to the Power PC arch for Apple's purposes. I can't think of any good reasons to run Darwin instead of FreeBSD, unless you feel li...

The Barracuda IV is a nice drive. My only change would be to ditch the Via chipsets for a Sis 735 based board. Leadtek makes a good one. I might also dump the Live in favor of a turtle beach santa cruz (pricey)or hercules muse xl (cheap).

I'm not sure that I would go with a board based on a Via chipset, but that's a personal bias. I would go with a Sis chipset and the Leadtek 7350KDA. It's a solid board with full overclocking features. I would also shy away from the Volcano HSF for overclocking. An Alpha PAL 8045 is still the king of...

I think fanless has a decent shot at working with that phatty Alpha sink. If it doesn't you can always add a fan. Would one of those funky Zalman "flower" 'sinks fit into a SV 24? Don't skimp on the case and power supply. It's foolish to put together a nice system and then have a flaky power supply or hot case introduce instability. When it comes to a PS, 300 watts should be sufficent for your system, but more is always better. 350 would not be overkill. Buy a good brand name...

It should work. Just put the cards in ad-hoc mode and they'll see each other. On the machine with the wired NIC, enable routing + DHCP forwarding and you should be good to go.
