Re: Obsolete IT in the wild

Corporate users typically do not upgrade until official support ends. (And sometimes not even then.) Does not change a thing. Windows 7 is ancient and as obsolete as the headphone jack or a manual transmission (and I ******* love manual transmissions). What is obsolete about the headphone jack or m...

Could be worse, they could still be using i8080/Z80 systems with 5 1/4" or even 8" floppies running CP/M.

That was cold. Nah... just a personal preference. I like reading manuals, just did not get to it yet and wanted the fast help so I can sleep, ha, ha. Posting RTFM does nothing anyway to the value of the post. I guess we are all different so whatever ... 8) :D  RTFM is akin to calling someone ...

Re: the official Indian food lovers thread!

There's a really good Indian/Nepali place just down the road and their lamb vindaloo is delicious (and spicy as hell). Haven't tried the goat yet, but they have it on the menu. Haven't had a bad thing from them yet. The Vindaloo we see today is based on a Portuguese dish that evolved in the Portugu...

Re: the official Indian food lovers thread!

Anyting else that is good? You can't go wrong with chicken tikka masala. It's technically a british dish that was heavily influenced by Indian food but it's since become standard fare in Indian cuisine. Other dishes that are good are chicken vindaloo (oft similar to masala but also has potato in it...

Very similar to lamb curry, but IME goat tends to have a slightly "gamier" flavor.

Any foods you recommend next time I go to a Indian place?

Re: the official Indian food lovers thread!

Yes, the first two times I had lamb were gyros. I think I rather have the lamb curry. Properly made gyros are delicious. The pieces of meat should be just a little crispy around the edge, but still moist... tzatziki sauce, raw onion, a little tomato, and feta cheese, served in pita bread that has b...

Re: the official Indian food lovers thread!

Yeah lamb tastes really strange to me since I don't eat it very often. Come to think of it, the curry is the third time I had lamb meat. Which is why I got it. Ever had gyros? The ones served at US fast food restaurants are usually a lamb/beef blend. Goat is similar, but even more strongly flavored...

Re: the official Indian food lovers thread!

I should mention that I did enjoy the Indian food even though it tastes a bit strange to me. Anything that is seasoned with completely different spices and herbs than what you grew up eating will taste "a bit strange" at first. Maybe even "a lot strange". Yeah lamb tastes really...

The T430 is over five years old, so looking for current add-in cards for an interface that were niche at the time is quite a fishing expedition. That said, a cursory search on Amazon and Newegg would answer your question without yet another thread. That just tells me that they have ExpressCard devi...

No I don't feel compelled to find a use case for the ExpressCard slot on my notebook. The only use case I will probably ever have for this is a modem card for mobile networks.

There's also a Sound Blaster X-Fi for that slot if your'e desperate to shove something in there. I use Linux and I don't think that device is supported. And besides, the on board audio is good enough for me anyway. Well if I have to read your mind and know what cards you're interested in and won't ...

It *was* a thing. However, support has waned and it was never a popular interface to begin with. If you do want to use the slot you'd best think about your use case and purchase something as soon as you can. I think the only ExpressCard I've seen in the wild was a mobile 4G modem on a couple of peo...

ExpressCard, is it still a thing?

I checked the manual for my Thinkpad T430, and it a 34mm ExpressCard slot on the right side. Is ExpressCard still a thing? I checked Newegg for such devices and they don't seem to have that many items for this. The SSD they do have in this format is way more expensive for it's size then a SATA3 2.5&...

OK I updated the BIOS/UEFI last night without bricking the notebook and thank you guys for advising me to get a refurbished laptop instead of the Alpha Litebook I was looking at. Even with spending some money later to upgrade this with more memory and an SSD, I still get a much better notebook.

OK I haven't burned a DVD yet so that's another thing to do. And the 14" screen is 1366x768 which is good enough for me. And the WiFi sees several networks so I know that works. Manjaro Linux installed just fine with no problems. I know I said this before, but this notebook looks and feel brand...

OK due to the HDD this thing really feels slow so I'm going to have to order a SSD for this ASAP. And maybe some more memory as well.
