Why? AMD is not competing with Pentiums.

I thought it was suppose to complete with both the Pentiums and the Core i3s?

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

The only thing that kills off PC gaming is the annual endorsement from Microsoft on how they are now committed to gamers on the PC. Serious ... this year, they aim to make things much more enjoyable for gamers. No really, THIS is the year that they follow through !! Now come on, they weren't TOO se...

Re: Adobe will put Flash out to pasture by 2020

Apparently the simulator has even been ported to the Raspberry Pi. (At least one person seems to think that the RPi version is pretty close to the performance of the original Multics on the hardware of the time.) Is there anything in the Jargon File that is truly dead? I would have thought Multics ...

Re: Adobe will put Flash out to pasture by 2020

Again, you've gotta get over the idea of "died out" on any language. Give it a modern platform to run in and it's fine. Too much money and time invested in apps to just discard them. Lisp (invented in the 1950s) is still alive and well too. https://xkcd.com/224/ https://xkcd.com/297/ OK g...

Better question: why does it need replaced?

Because it was first developed in the 50's/60's?

SMT is extremely difficult to get right, and this being AMD's first SMT design, I'll give it a free pass (as far as their reputation). Its Intel I'm more willing to give a free pass on. I may not like their product segmentation nonsense, but outside of very rare issues (TSX for example) their stuff...

WOW! Seriously? That's some devotion right there. I enjoy a lot of products, but I've never thought of buying stocks in them. Then again, I'd likely lose a ton of money, since I tend to root for the underdog. That's one of my many flaws. If you'd bought AMD stock 2 years ago and sold right before t...

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

I'd probably go half way. For desktop systems, I'd recommend a small, decently performing SSD for OS and frequently used things that benefit from fast random access. Mechanical for everything else. Exactly what I did. OS + normal applications is SSD. Games are on the 2TB HDD. Maybe three drives? 1)...

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

High end PC gaming costs have gotten out of control IMO. As long as this system stays working I'm done buying anything for many years unless I can sell off this 1070 later for a decent amount. IMO, they're the cheapest they've been in...ever...really. Look at what $500 could purchase a decade ago, ...

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

I would also add the peripherals. I used to buy $10 keyboard and $5 mice. The re-introduction of mechanical keyboards (I already had one in the 1990s) has pushed prices a bit. Most importantly, the introduction of "gaming" peripherals has also increased prices significantly. Or maybe I'm ...

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

"High end" has always required a non-trivial cash outlay. What's different today is that more of the cost of a high-end gaming rig is in the GPU, as opposed to other system components. I don't think overall system cost has changed much in roughly 2 decades. I would also add the peripheral...
