Re: The GPD can run Linux!!!

I was going to say Goldmont should be better, but now that I look, I don't see any Goldmont CPUs with a TDP that low. Airmont is also a bit newer than I had been thinking; I don't keep track of Atom generations like I do for the big cores. While a GPD with a Core-M would be pretty cool, it would al...

But they're still using that same old Atom? As I said, I don't mind, but that seems like a questionable decision for the more general market.

What are the current Atom cores now, Apollo Lake? Isn't a there low end Pentium M CPU now that can be scaled down to 4.5 TDP?

Re: Strange thought of the day.

There's a couple of ifs but installing Ubuntu is possibly even easier than Windows. ie, "if" you have supported hardware there's no hunting for drivers ; whereas Windows only has the in-box drivers which are quickly outdated, the install media for Ubuntu is likely only a couple of months ...

Perhaps a perception among some people that we are heading for a period of global political instability? Kind of like the gold bug thing, but geekier. My thought is some of the gold bug/silver people went to these. Gold and silver have been flat since their big spike a few years back. Still histori...

I have forgotten about the GPD Win handheld computer but seeing this video makes me want to get one:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTSVysKUmXM&t=447s
I think I'll go ahead buy this later this year. Shame about the short battery life and the small 64GB eMMC storage however.

Re: OS/2 is coming back.

You've completely missed the point. The only compelling reason to run it is because you've got legacy OS/2 apps that won't run on anything else. BSD or Linux won't help you with that. Maybe I did, but they be better off developing applications for BSD and Linux that can read data formats used by OS...

Due to the lack of support and the really ancient hardware OS/2 runs on, wouldn't it current users be way better off getting new hardware and switching over to BSD or Linux? Hardware support wasn't all that great to begin with and it is a huge nightmare trying to find still working 90's era systems...

I'm not sure if this goes here or in the Unix section, but I have having this really strange thought about that somewhere there a smart 8 or 9 y/o kid who has built a computer and has Linux running without any help from his or her parents. And said kid is better at doing both than I am. Is this remo...

Re: What cases and PSUs are you guys using?

Water cooling. Not everyone is going to use water cooling to overclock if they even overclock at all. Why don't the manufacturers offer the same model without the vents on top of the case? Locations for additional exhaust fans are potentially useful even if you don't watercool. Just don't set your ...

Re: What cases and PSUs are you guys using?

From my 2012 build to my 2107 build I have stopped using 5.25", 3.5", and 2.5" drives. Case size has dropped by a third while fan size has increased to 140mm from 120mm. This reminds me of around 10 years ago when the trend for cell phones was to make them as small as possible. They ...

So what are you using for storage then? As far as I know M.2 gumsticks didn't come out until 2014.

Re: What cases and PSUs are you guys using?

All valid rants. The case market is pretty lame really - probably the side effect of them being low-profit, bulky, low-tech goods with minimal turnover. People will replace and upgrade the hundreds of dollars of components that go into a case but not think twice about their $50 commodity metal box....

I think I'll stick with the Ryzen 7 1700, I can stick that in the MILO-08 case with no problems once I find a suitable HSF with the right mounting bracket. I rather doubt that I could use the "Threadripper" well enough to justify the cost anyway.

Re: What cases and PSUs are you guys using?

OK I have some rants about cases now. My Corsair 300R has the 3.5" drive cage rotated 90 degrees and uses trays that can also handle 2.5" drives so it is far less awkward to install new a HDD/SSD. This should be a standard feature of cases, so why isn't it? Glass windows on cases, why woul...

OK, agree on all the above stated points. But "archival" has a strong overlap with what is technically piracy. For example, trying to watch an episode of a low to mid-popularity TV episode that aired years ago and never saw a DVD release, and the TV network's not responding to requests fo...

Years ago I used to be a pirate, pirating movies, software, games, and music. I quite a long time ago for serval reasons: 1) I have better Ethics now: People who put a out a good and useful products deserve to get paid for their work. 2) The increase risk of malware and ransomware. I got bitten hard...

I'm thinking for my next build I'll use a smaller case. Maybe an mITX case like the Silverstone Milo-08BH. I was also looking at several MicroATX cases from Silverstone as well but I forget which ones.
