Kite Vendors on Georgetown's Streets (3 pics).

Happy Easter everyone. Last Thursday I went out to see what was going on for Easter on the main commercial streets in Georgetown (Guyana). I figure there aren't too many here who would have seen Georgetown at Easter. My collection is here: http://photography.badlightgoodlight.com/easterkites (11 ima...

Re: Browsing safely online.

That neatly dodges the fact that everyone can upgrade to IE8 and even better if they make the choice to upgrade to IE8 and off of Windows XP. The original challenge remains in that your statement based upon no more than "conventional wisdom" is putting questionable info out. I may well no...

Re: Browsing safely online.

Do you have any actual evidence that IE8 is so much less secure than these others? I've seen reviews that score it above, below, or about the same as Firefox for example. Perhaps if you expanded on the "variety of reasons" that might be helpful? Personally, I use Chrome - it's fast, it's ...

Browsing safely online.

Like many of the readers here I suspect, I am primary tech support for my family and some close friends. After seeing the appalling habits of a friend recently and being concerned about the question before I wanted to do some kind of document that I could refer people to from time to time. I ended u...

Re: I'm done!

Thanks for looking. Early on I had decided not to title any of the photos so as not to influence people's impressions. I enjoy getting others' unique interpretations and titling and captioning will influence that. But towards the end I decided to try titling and quite enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that...

Re: I'm done!

Thanks for the detailed review. I know how hard it can be to do that for such a large number of photos, I really appreciate your time. I had reversed the order of the photos in the album to newest first. You are quite right about focus issues in earlier shots, they tended to come mostly when I used ...

Re: I'm done!

Thanks. By about 2/3rds of the way in I had figured out the processing that I like and I had put together a set of presets in Lightroom. Most of the time I just clicked a preset, made minor corrections and uploaded. The hardest part was usually keyword tagging (I'm a bit OCD). just had a quick look....

Thanks, I have a bit of a weakness for high contrast monochromes. Subtlety is not my strong suit :)

That's downright inspiring. Nice work! I particularly like the contrast on many of your artistic black-and-whites -- almost no grayscale yet the subject is very clear.

Re: I'm done!

This one seems to be the favourite of most people. I nearly didn't get it as my friend an I had taken a series of photos and were about to leave, when I decided to try a wide angle view with the sky being dominant. We had driven far out of town looking for a break in what seemed like endless storm c...

With my 365 project, that is. It became a hard slog towards the end and I am very happy to see the end. I believe I got what I wanted primarily, which was to develop my familiarity with my camera, get an better judge for focal lengths and exposure settings. About 8 months ago I posted my 365 project...

Re: New Camera Battery?

I've used batteries from bestbatt.com for my Pentax K7. They are about 1/3 the cost of the OEM replacements. I bought 2 after reading a few good reviews elsewhere and I have been using them for about 9 months now without any issues (the original battery goes in the camera and the replacement goes in...

Voldenuit, I appreciate your very detailed and considered response. It is clear you spent a fair bit of time on my photos and I am grateful. First, let me be clear. I am very new to photography. 5 years at the most (although I have been a dabbler for a much longer time). Your telling me that I am no...

I am not a frequent poster on TR (although I visit religiously every day and have been a member for a while), so I feel a bit apprehensive about making this request. I've been interested in photography for a very long time, but only really seriously started pursuing it about 4 years now. I now use a...

Hmmm, to answer my own question I think it was probably a Contura Aero, although the pictures don't look particularly familiar. I do recognise the trackball on the side though.

Re: Batch image convertion (tif to jpg or png)

I know you specified linux, so this is not likely to be particularly helpful, but you mentioned photoshop which probably means that you have access to windows (or Mac). If you do I highly recommend Faststone Photo Resizer. I have been using it for a couple years now, it is freeware, handles multiple...

I didn't know that firefox permitted colour management. Thanks for that, it was a little painful having my eyeballs seared by the reds of some websites (even after profiling with a Huey Pro I still turned down the reds about 10%). The monitor isn't glossy, by the way. I did both a manual calibration...

What revision is your 2408WFP? I was considering this panel, but I've heard enough about Rev A00 to hold off on it. A01 is apparently in existence but the shipments are still supposedly rather mixed. I will check this evening and let you know. It seems odd that a wide gamut display would make non-c...

I haven't posted in a while, so just to be neighbourly I thought I'd recount my most recent head slap moment. I have a projector attached to my home PC along with my main monitor (formerly a 22" AOC). I got a new Dell 2408 and just couldn't wait to shutdown and plug it in (bet you can see where...

The camera is a Pentax K10D SLR with the FA 50 1.4 lens. It is the lens that is doing all the hard work in those pictures as the lighting is usually very poor.

But the focal length of the lens is less than ideal (a little too telephoto). Unfortunately, I can't afford a wider angle for now.

I just got myself a Nokia E61 ( product page & review ) It satisfies most of your criteria if you get some extra memory via miniSD but it doesn't do the FM interfacing and it doesn't have a camera. You may also have a look at the Motorola Q ( review ). I doubt that you will find one device that ...
