Re: Bad timing on my new build... future supply and demand?

Short answer is nobody knows.

I'm hoping AMD actually having competition will bring prices down once the mining crap dies down, if it dies down at all. Give it another 3-4 months though, we'll see how things are in January after all the holiday **** is over.

Plus, it is really easy to go a single website and "buy" all of the PS+ games that month for all Sony systems. It is equally easy to do that with Xbox. I've gotten some amazing free games out of either platform, though I'll allow I haven't been incredibly impressed with Games with Gold re...

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

DX11/12 would make this game run really well though, on most computers. They said the graphics code was a very tiny amount of the engines overall problem. I don't know if I believe that unless they legitimately have no engine programmers working on the game at all...which given what I've seen of th...

Re: Console peasants....

It seems like all of the good Xbox games are now out for PC as well. Yes, PC+win10 is now part of the Xbox platform. You don't need the X1 to play most anything from MS after Quantum Break. That said, Gears of War 4 for me at least has been a total **** to get running on PC. (Not to mention my fun ...

Right this moment, only the PS4 Pro has a reasonable amount of power to compete with the PC platform. I have no idea why the ps3 is even being mentioned in 2017, especially on this site.

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

AMD doesn't have feature parity with Nvidia enough for me to even consider them. The only thing AMD has that Nvidia doesn't is Freesync, which IS nice, but not nice enough for me to drop the rest of the niceties of green team. Mainly because they aren't jerks about everything. For example TrueAudio...

It was a great screen though. I get the feeling HDR screens have a bigger focus on contrast and quality than SDR ones do (unless you pay for the higher end stuff.)

If I could use it without the extra hassle, I definitely would.

Re: HDR gaming

Well, with my current kit (even with the new receiver) this is all not really worth it. The TV doesn't respond well to certain apps (be this a driver/win10 thing or just the TV I got....I have no idea) so is best used with consoles. (It also doesn't do 1440p@60hz, which is around the sweet spot for ...

Re: Guild Wars 2 performance

Guild Wars 2 just plain runs poorly. It could be slow on my Core 2 Duo and GTX 460. It was slow on my Ivy Bridge/660Ti/290X. And there are still parts that slow down to embarrassing lows on my 7700K/1080Ti. All fresh installs. Yeah people have suggested it's very single core heavy and they've done ...

Re: ryzen 3 1300X

But what would those charts look like if stuff was still at its RRP, like Intel's? That's my point. It has to be both cheaper AND better to sell well. Honestly I don't care enough to speculate. Saying it's doomed without any supporting evidence except a price shift seems pointless. Though it is kin...

They should, but what about more expensive CPUs they can't sell otherwise? The near-instantaneous price drops at Newegg and other stores (like the 1700X for $339, 1700 for $279) indicate that even with the excellent overall performance, AMD is having a hard time shifting units. https://www.amazon.c...

If it's something that MS deems destructive then VMs are your best bet, whether you want to go there or not.

Or just go back to win7. Windows always tries to keep legacy apps working, but to highly varying degrees of success.

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

I am just not getting excited like I used to for AAA titles. Not sure if that's on account of my old age (likely) or that they're just not making the games that I like these days (also possible). Most likely it's a combination. I've never really been a 3D shooter fan, and it feels like tons of AAA ...

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

The only thing that kills off PC gaming is the annual endorsement from Microsoft on how they are now committed to gamers on the PC. Considering Forza Horizon 3 and Gears 4 were of extremely few reasons I had to upgrade my PC at all I think they care more than anyone else does anymore. More devs tha...

And even if SSD prices haven't risen in absolute terms, you're typically paying the same price for flash with crappier endurance as the race to the bottom continues. The chances of an SSD crapping out in normal usage scenarios still seem monumentally slim even with the worse endurance. I'll worry a...

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

"High end" has always required a non-trivial cash outlay. What's different today is that more of the cost of a high-end gaming rig is in the GPU, as opposed to other system components. I don't think overall system cost has changed much in roughly 2 decades. All I can say is the cost of ev...

HDR gaming

This stuff is mighty confusing. My TV likes 1440p, except when it doesn't? Is that because of the HDR modes or no? Wait, there's a premium certified HDMI cable standard for it? And Displayport supports dynamic metadata and HDMI doesn't yet? Why does my screens brightness seem so off if I leave it be...
