Well, I tried the ATA Secure erase and it didn't work out. Found a bootable linux ISO that already had hdpart installed on it. I could get it to run, then I had problems with my SSD's being frozen. Found a workaround but then I couldn't get the commands found on part 2a in post #2 from jbi to work....
Not every writefile in process monitor will necessarily hitting the disk. You can use diskmon from sysinternals to watch what bits are hitting the disk, which are frequently much smaller than those in procmon. FWIW: I get similar results when I leave Chrome sitting idle. So when you were looking at ...
I might be totally wrong on this but looking at your screenshots it says your "OS is optimized for HDD". Could this mean that TRIM is not enabled? Does that have an impact on the number of writes? I'm curious what it says the optimizations would do. No, "OS Optimization" in the ...
Silverstone Argon AR01 or AR03. The heatsink itself is pretty much the exact same thing as the 212 Evo -- narrow tower, direct contact heatpipes -- but the fan is tons better for low noise operation. It does amazing things at only 33db , way better than the 212 Evo at the exact same price (for AR01,...
Essentially, is the jump to AM2 at this point worth the extra $80? Of course now that I look at it I'm thinking this is a dumb question. But I'd like to hear some opinions. Very much so, since the K10 (next amd chip) is confirmed to initially work with AM2. Ram is also cheap now, so even 2 gb of DD...
Thanks that was unusually good and long. I like the way "Rabbit" writes. I'll have to keep my eyes open for more info, this game sounds great. He and the rest of the GJW writers are awesome. Julian Murdoch / rabbit is actually a pro writer. It's been on my daily bookmarks or rss reader fo...
Apple machines have been using non-Apple specific hardware for years (when will this FUD end?). To clarify: Macs haven't required special peripheral hardware for ages, With the notable exception of the video card. What's up with that on the Mac Pro though? Do they use standard cards post-intel swit...
Yes, but not as much as you might expect. Those bulbs have a horrendous power factor, and if you find one that lists its actual current consumption @ nominal voltage, it will be up to twice the bulb rating. Still better than incandescents (if you ignore the noise being injected back into the electr...
only other differences between the Ex-Gamer and Ex-Music is the Ex-Music is a wider card, has gold pinouts instead of colored plastic, and has a joystick/midi port.
That isn't a juystick/midi port, it's a connector for the external breakout box ($180).
Are you overclocking? That motherboard uses the Nforce4. The <s>nf4</s> chipset has a problem with the sata if it is overclocked. Basically, two of the sata ports stayed at spec frequency, but the other two were overclocked in proportion to the HT. Sata does not like that. IIRC it is sata ports 3&am...
My 2 Quantum Fireball drives are still humming along. You know, I recently found a lot of people used to swear by quantum, including steve gibson. But I replaced a lot of them the first two years I was working tech support. Then they got bought. Maybe it was just a bad run or something. But is 80c ...
Edit: The performance impact of 1T vs 2T is increased bandwidth. On plain DDR is could be up to 15% in synthetic tests (less on DDR2). But overall system impact is much less, even in high-bandwidth applications. It's in the "nice to have" area if your ram can use it. 1.Whats the differnece...
And guys, I'd appreciate some links explaining the stuff you discuss in the last few posts. I tend to isolate myself from weirdness when needed and apparently I seemed to have missed what happened. What, the Paris Hilton stuff or the barbarian stuff? Paris Hilton is a stupid celebrity over here in ...
I run ubuntu on a p3-800 laptop w/ 256mb ram. The gnome wm works pretty well, though I do disable the evolution background service. But I use xfce most of the time, it's much snappier. Xfce is also quite easy to configure for me. I don't like the xfce file manager much. But I'm still running ubuntu ...
HT is not the memory bus. HT is used to communicate between the CPU and the chipset. Then whats the lowest latency k8 or even k10 can tehnically use? The lowest latency to memory depends on what ram you buy and what settings it can run at. Take a look at this old post I wrote on the subject. It's a...
Guys but my drive is quantum fireball pluss 20gb. Wow, now that brings up some memories! And is anyone else surprised a fireball lasted 7 years? I always thought that name was very apropos to how many of them I saw go up in smoke. ;) ... This WD would be a good bargain HD that'd be guaranteed to wo...
There was a game that I couldn't get the audio working on because I couldn't get enough memory available. It might have been wing commander. It might have been any game during the ugly transition during the late 80s to early 90s. Ultima VII was like that as well. By '94 it was pretty much figured o...
Why do you guys care so much? If we all just ignored her this kind of thing wouldn't happen. I've been ignoring her like a mother----er for the last five years, and it doesn't seem to help. Well, look at it this way, she still spent three more days in jail than Scooter Libby will. He got thirty mon...
whats the difference between the extreme gamer and the extreme music? Not much... The Extreme Music has a connectors for the special IO boxes, on the back for the external box and a header on the card for the drive bay one. The Gamer has connectors for "standard" front panel audio connect...
OK, so these aren't high-performance DIMMs... I knew that. But is it just me, or is 3-5-5-11-2T horrendously sloppy? It's... weird , but I wouldn't necessarily say sloppy. Trcd, Trp, and Tras make almost no performance difference so it's not like having them at higher timings will affect the system...
That whole 1:1 thing doesn't make a bit of difference? It makes so little difference that it's not worth chasing after. So the $20 difference between a DDR2-800 kit and DDR2-667 kit is worth it? Well, if you are on a budget and would benefit from saving that $20, then no. DDR2-800 has very little i...
If you hate the XP "Luna" style and always want to use classic style (or maybe a different style ), you can delete everything in C:\Windows\Resources\Luna The permanent fix, as it were. It also means windows will boot up just that slight bit faster, because it doesn't have to load the luna...
So I assume disabling Superfetch was a bad idea..... Superfetch isn't some miraculous speed improver. In most cases I doubt you'll be able to tell if it's on or off (standard windows prefetch works well enough 99% of the time). But there is no downside to Superfetch. It isn't a trade off that it ma...
Ok, this rant is not directed at you, Nerve, more about computer enthusiasts in general, because I've heard other people talk about "investing" in a computer: Computers are not an investment. Investments are things that give you a return, either in monetary gain or fulfillment of needs. Yo...
I'm still uncertain whether this is a good jump in performance to be worthy of investment... Well, do you really really love Oblivion and play it every day? If so, then it might be worth it, HDR+AA+AF is so tasty. If not, then personally I would say no. True, the 8800 is a lot faster than a 7900. B...
Yeah, that's been around for a while. Search and you'll find references going back five years or more. PCworld, bringing you yesterdays computer news today! ... The freezer trick can work on any HD that's crashed because of "stiction" or similar mechanical problems. It became popular &...
No you mis-understood the ocz is only .03 off from idle to load the antec 12 v rail is like 11.2 idle thats why iam replacing it Ooooooh. Ok, that was not at all clear, it seemed like you were referring to the antec. Yes 11.2 is not good. That's in the "should be replaced" range of less t...
The antec has to go (thats the 4000+ rig ) Except that if the reason you think it's bad because the 12v is off by .03 volts, it's not bad? I dunno, it's your money, spend it how you want I guess... I'll take the antec off your hands if you don't want it, save you the trouble of throwing it away. ;)
SuperSpy already answered, but I'm going to try to explain in more detail... Edit: Daaaaaamn you JBI! One thing I've got to ask, since hashes are supposed to be unique, so that only a single hash represents a unique file, why can't hashes be used as a compression method? I mean, I understand how the...
To resurrect this thread one more time, the latest Dan's Data is all about the 4gb memory barrier and shadow memory. Topics include: how this is a predictable rehash of old dos memory junk, why even a 64bit OS may not be able to use 4gb, and how the PAE switch is useless for this problem (and actual...
