Re: Weirdest concurrent hdd failure

About power:

It's coming from 2 different substations, both lines are covered with UPSes and diesel generators.

Absolutely no. Almost no one has access... 24-hour surveillance etc.

Re: Weirdest concurrent hdd failure

As I said previously, the building is under strict guard, with failsafe ventilation, electric, anti-fire systems and all visits are logged. Furthermore, only 3 people have access to our servers directly. No one was near the servers when it happened.

Yes as far as I know they were in the same server room, possibly in the same rack.

Re: Weirdest concurrent hdd failure

No storms. All the power is run through UPSes, so if there was a problem with over-current we would know. All the temperatures where within range (the server room has redundant cooling system). 24-hour manned guard, video cameras around every corner, plus only 3 people have the key to our server rac...

Re: Weirdest concurrent hdd failure

I don't have those details at the moment, but wouldn't a PSU spike kill all the drives? Why would it happen across a farm of servers and only kill selected drives? As for the exact nature of the failure... we didn't have time to investigate yet, since we needed to rebuild the arrays to ensure data i...

Weirdest concurrent hdd failure

Hey people, I just heard from my boss that we had the strangest thing happen today. We own around 20 servers, where we host our clients' websites and databases. During a one minute interval, 16:40-16:41 local time *FIVE* hard drives failed simultaneously. 4 IBM drives, 1 WD. Both SAS and SATA. The o...

Re: Please help me pick out the perfect 600W PSU

Yep, it seems that Corsair is the right choice. As I said before, I don't like the HX series because of the ribbon modular cables which are a nightmare to install for my hdds because of my Chieftec case. So the cables must be sleeved. It's going to be either VX550 (the fan kicks into high gear a bit...

Re: Please help me pick out the perfect 600W PSU

Your system isn't going to put much over 300 (maybe 350) watts of load on the power supply, even at peak. Mine pulls 280-320 watts from the wall while gaming. Hmm... you have a quite similar system to mine. In that case even a 550W Corsair would do, the VX one. It's a bit cheaper and the fan doesn'...

Re: Please help me pick out the perfect 600W PSU

Oh no, it's a trusty Zalman with a really really quiet fan. Right now I'm leaning mostly towards RX-series Nexus, cause it has a large fan, modular SLEEVED cabling and actually it's cheaper than the NX-series. I trust the Corsair might be better in some regards, but the fan does have a really steep ...

Re: Please help me pick out the perfect 600W PSU

The current PSU is 3+ years old and there are occasional funny beeping noises coming from inside it. I think it's time to change it. :) I do a fair bit of heavy gaming, so my system might be maxed out both on the CPU and GPU, plus all the drives inside. I wonder how much power my computer *really* n...

Re: Please help me pick out the perfect 600W PSU

Guys, thanks for all the input. However, the thing is, that I live in the middle of nowhere and ordering stuff from newegg is not an option (time constraints). So I would really love it if you'd make a pick among the three that I presented in the first post. My system: Core i5-750 4 GB DDR3-1333 5x ...

Re: Please help me pick out the perfect 600W PSU

Yes the ribbon cables are out of the question unfortunately, because my hdd bay is rotated 90 degrees to the left and i have very limited space there. Ribbon cables are harder and stiffer, while normal sleeved cabled I can use quite easily. So the Corsair modular (HX-series) is out of the question.

Abit AN8 Ultra - share your experiences

So, you have AN8 Ultra? Please share your experiences! Does it get freakishly hot like some reviewers complain? Do the newer BIOS versions still have a lot of quirks? How's the overclocking?

Thinking seriously about this board (plus a venice 3200+).

Galaxy Glacier Geforce 6800 (AGP, 128MB)

Here's the card I'm thinking of getting (the other option is Sapphire X800 PCIe). http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD04NDgmdXJsX3BhZ2U9Mg== The specs look quite good. The memory is rated for 900 MHz, but running on 700 MHz, meaning some overclocking potential. The core...

I have a Hercules 9700 Pro card - it's great for me. The stock cooling solution is the best I've seen. I can play Doom3 just fine, not to mention my favourite game of all time - Quake2. PCIe graphics would be nice, but I'm not so sure upgrading to X700 Pro will have a big performance benefit. I'm al...

One of my friends who's working at a computer shop says they get a lot of crappy Epoxes, they seem to fail a lot more than Abit or Asus.

Plus, that model isn't availible here.

Now I'm thinking maybe 3000+ s754 and Abit NF8 would work...
Haven't decided anything though.

I'd also like to stick with nvidia chipsets, but unfortunately there isn't a board with nvidia chipset + s939 + agp support.

I don't see any reason for upgrading the gfx, my Hercules 9700 Pro works just fine. =)

JdL: I knew 8bits=1byte when most people didn't have computers. =) What's the point in having the gigabit LAN when you don't have the bandwidth? Would you want your ethernet card to suck up most of the system's resources? GLAN makes sense in PCI-X and PCIe chipsets. And the 133MB/sec is the theoreti...

I want YOUR opinion - Asus A8V Deluxe vs Abit AV8

Well, I want your opinion, if you've had one of the boards. I'm interested in reliability. The board I want should be rocks-solid, without any stupid little annoyances. I don't care about stuff like gigabit ethernet (which is usually tied to the PCI bus, rendering it completely useless) or extreme o...

The correct word instead of "OEM" should be "bulk". OEM stands for company that produces hardware and sells it to third-party developers, who just put their logo on the thing and sell it as their own product.

Or at least that's the impression I've gotten.
