Re: Upgrade Path for Aging Processor

I ain't condoning spending a ton of money just to go "let's see how far I can take this" just for the heck of it, but if the man wants to, it's his money and if he gets enjoyment out of it then more power to him. If he ain't harming anyone then I see no issue. I have an IT friend who does ...

Another vote for Dark Matter being good. It wasn't fantastic but it was good and was just getting really good when the final season ended. Huge shame SyFy ended it without giving it another chance. Currently rewatching Deadwood again. Saw the Deadwood Movie last weekend and found it a satisfying but...

Back in the day I had an old ASUS M2N32 Sli Deluxe mobo (from 2006) that died from capacitor plague in 2009. It showed every sign of cap plague and behaved like it.

I don't understand why anyone would recommend against getting the 2080 if it's around the same price to you as the 2070. It's an obvious upgrade that is considerably faster than the 2070: https://techreport.com/review/34445/asus-rog-strix-geforce-rtx-2070-graphics-card-reviewed/13 . It doesn't matte...

Yeah, my Oreck takes a beating. I don't have a commercial model but it's still a sturdy vacuum and a workhorse. I bash it into all sorts of things and it takes it in stride. It's surrounded by this semi-soft but really tough plastic that absorbs impacts well. It's so lightweight it pulls itself alon...

Miele. There is no substitute. Yes, they're pricey, but they last forever (going on 15 years for mine). Also, canister will always be more versatile than an upright. Seconded on Miele. Went through numerous vacuums for years. Finally bought a Miele and it's just fantastic. Well built, good suction,...

Re: Fish hobbyist thread (aquariums and tanks - not the sport)

Reminds me of when I had a 75 gallon reef tank. Only had a few fish in it, mostly corals, snails, and shrimp. It was a really gorgeous tank, very health and stable. Just before I went on vacation some kind of extremely fast growing plant came in on some live rock. It grew so fast you wouldn't believ...

Re: What are you playing right now?

I've played every older AC title, from 1, 2, Brotherhood, Revelations, 3, Black Flag, and Unity. I really enjoyed all the games until 3 which just didn't hook me, then I enjoyed Black Flag for everyone's usual reasons. Unity I played probably half of and just stopped. I got into some other games and...

RE: balanced- it doesn't make much sense for most purposes, but I have found that noise can be introduced around PCs in a variety of ways and a balanced path pretty much eliminates them. Alongside optical output to a balanced DAC to get ground separation as well, at the very least the analog signal...

Re: Crytek Raytracing demo real time on Vega 56.

I watched the Gamer's Nexus video (here it is: https://youtu.be/CuoER1DwYLY ) and took home what seems like a different conclusion than you did. When done properly, global illumination (GI) CAN look nearly identical to a ray traced scene, but it cannot do this in a dynamic environment. They demonst...

Re: Crytek Raytracing demo real time on Vega 56.

Edited: Apparently I didn't watch the whole video even though I thought I did, so my argument here was invalid until the next paragraphs. As far as noise goes, that's certainly an issue but I feel one that's exaggerated in Gamer's Nexus's video. If you look at Metro Exodus's implementation of ray tr...

https://www.schiit.com/products/jotunheim IMO, this covers all you need. It might be a little bit out of your range, but IMO it's worth it. Yeah, the original was definitely dated looking even for it's time. Considering that Halo: Combat Evolved came out a year later and looked an entire generation newer on an Xbox no less, it was certainly lacking. Compare these two and remember there was a year separating these two games: https://gami...

Bolt solution worked. I know a guy who let me borrow his angle grinder, so I bought a bolt and ground the head down so it was thin enough to fit, then used my dremel to cut it to length. My drill press made getting an even grind and cut a piece of cake. Ace hardware had the grade 8 bolt I needed. I'...

I missed that photo. Yes, you're right. But nothing an angle grinder can't fix. I've ground down bolt heads plenty of times. You probably don't have access to a lathe, but a cheapy angle grinder would cost you about $20-30 if you HAD to buy one. If you have a drill press you can even use it as a la...

Clevis pin might work. I don't know why you'd bother with a Grade 5 bolt unless stronger bolts are not available anywhere - the price difference should be negligeable considering you only need one. Grade 8 minimum, I'd say. Most specially fastener stores or automotive supply stores should have much...

A 5/16" clevis pin is probably the closest "off the shelf" part you will find. If you look at the broken pin, on the left, you can see where the end has been expanded like a rivet. The cotter pin would provide the same function when passed through the clevis pin. https://www.grainger...

Go to the hardware store and buy a 5/16" grade 5 bolt and cut to length if you have to. Cut off the head, if its long enough it shouldn't fall out even without a head, could always glue it in place. I don't think a bolt will work because the threading will interfere with the function of those ...

The tilt brake on my office chair broke and now it freely leans forward or backward making it unusable (sitting in it normally makes you lean forwards and nearly slide out). There's 20+ years of FPS's to choose from vs the last 10 years so there...
