Re: Time to update everything WiFi

Intel has released drivers that correct the problem. https://security-center.intel.com/advisory.aspx?intelid=INTEL-SA-00101&languageid=en-fr Oh, great. It's driver-side not OS-side on Windows. And, joy of joys, it's in that wonderful liability AMT again and obviously "For Intel® Active Man...

Re: Time to update everything WiFi

Debian already did, this morning, and OpenBSD jumped the gun with a silently-released patch (based on a PoC diff from the vuln discoverer, who writes "[t]o avoid this problem in the future, OpenBSD will now receive vulnerability notifications closer to the end of an embargo" ). On AP's, se...

Passed 50% of last year, 50.2% 8) but unfortunately it took us 50.4 47.2% of this month to do so :(

Edit was less than a minute later, leaving my error here in case anyone was ninja-fast enough to see it.

The majority of the games and mainstream content on the PC are still single and dual-thread at best with a few outliers go beyond that. Homework for Krogoth: research game performance on systems with just two threads vs. six+ threads. Pssst, Krogoth, mate. Over here, check it out, don't grass m...

Looking over these, I really wish the GTX 1070 was closer to its pre-Ethereum $350 MSRP, because it would be a shoo-in. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a deal, and hope for product announcements that might nudge the price lower. Thank you, everyone. GTX 1070 Ti will be a mining card, people wanting it...

8700k! I think it's time to put my Q9450 to bed and get a new machine. I've been waiting for some sort of thread bump :) Then you really missed your chance all these years since the 3930k :P Eh, what? Core i7-980X in Q1'10, 2 years after that Core 2 Q9450 and 18 months before the i7-3930K. S...

Gz. I have the Sapphire Vega 56, £380 on launch day from Scan, and am running it at a quick-and-dirty first stab changes of ( freq. target 1642, 1100 mV, fan_target 2900 RPM, T_max 85 °C, T_target 70 °C, P_limit +10% ) gets a consistent 1600 MHz at 70-74 °C I really should try dropping the fan down ...

It's better than it used to be, but yeah. Sometimes, sometimes not. It's incredible, really, that after all these years and despite the massive scale of deployment, none of the undeniably smart people at Microsoft have managed to architect and bring to the masses a means of efficiently patching the...

Having said that, all these cards are overkill for the OP @ 1440p60. Time to start saving for a 120 Hz monitor! They can be had without G-Sync for under $200 these days... Why stop there, 144 Hz VRR is where it's at  Srsly, the GTX 1060 isn't overkill, at least in a lot of games it'll struggl...

Depends how much you want to spend. I'd go GTX 1070, personally. On Newegg atm, it's GTX 1060 6 GB $255 - $513 GTX 1070 8 GB $400 - $919 GTX 1080 8 GB $505 - $1100 GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB $670 - $1213 GTX 980 Ti 6 GB $799 - $888 GTX TITAN Z 12 GB $1384 (ignore the last 2!) Re: I need some help, gerbils! Which are the quiet consumer hard drives?

Well, it's not like anyone'd use an SMR drive in a RAID array. Those things are meant for archival purposes, and I dare say, they suit that role just fine. Personally, I'm not that hard to surprise, having been advised of e.g. user data for a compute system sat on a set of the biggest WD Greens ava...

Re: Which cpu to get?

4 cores is plenty of go around for mainstream and gaming workloads unless you are a power user that likes to multi-task, but chances are that probably already running a HEDT-tier chip. ;) Possibly, if it's a single-user system and when you're gaming you're doing little else. If the machine is Windo...

Sure, those threads won't all be active, but it's unlikely that all four cores of a 4C system will be completely free for the active game. This ++, it's not even the thread, 4C is too few now. Neither. More info needed. Wait for the reviews. Wait for the price drops. Compared to the £300 7700K , the £320 1700X does decently, I'd call it swings and roundabouts. We have leaks which say the 8700K will come in at £360; it's a safe bet that it will be better than the 7700K and the 1700X at tha...

Re: Vega is [also] overpriced because AMD has manufacturing problems

3dfx killed 3dfx. They bought out a board partner in an attempt to become vertically integrated. That unnecessary distraction quickly put them 1-2 generations behind Nvidia and ate away a chunk of balance sheet even while their other former, now-aggravated board partners began competing to release ...

Yet AMD dominates in HPC / compute intensive workloads. When you only have the budget for one fabbed design, you make it count. Rubbish. NVIDIA dominates in HPC accelerators. Edit: 71 of the 91 accelerator-using systems on Top500 use NVIDIA, 1 uses AMD (1.1%); this is even worse than AMD's CPU show...

Almost all of my Precision orders over the last 17 years have been RedHat ones though, but still FFS.

34-41% from 2010 to 2014, fluctuating, of the dGPU market according to Jon Peddie Research, and given NVIDIA's greater dominance in the workstation GPU market I'd say you're out by a factor of 2.

Another remote possibility has struck me. There has been a rumor of Intel adopting AMD graphics. . As crazy as it would be, POP packaging would be a cheap and easy way to include both a CPU and GPU in a highend socket. The CPU side wouldn't need to be modified as there are 16 PCIe lanes not exposed...

I look at it pretty simply: between gamers, high-end compute, and cryptocurrency miners, AMD can't make enough Plus demand from Apple: Vega is in the iMac Pro, which starts shipping in December, and is a prominent component per Apple's product page https://www.apple.com/uk/imac-pro/ Vega graphics. ...
