Re: Any issue using a molex switch to turn off HDDs?

I might be getting muddled in the fog of time here, sorry - I thought EPP came along much later than it did, and was lower bandwidth than it was. A bit more googling and reading tells me that: ⋅  EPP was introduced by the (laptop) 386SL chipset in 1991 ⋅  EPP was standardised in ...

Re: Any issue using a molex switch to turn off HDDs?

(Were they ever a thing?) Probably? There were certainly parallel port external hard drive enclosures for PCs in the mid to late 90's, and once usbsupp.exe / OSR 2.1 came out in '97 there was that factor of 5-6x bandwidth improvement over EPP/ECP to be had - so while I don't personally remember any...

Re: So I installed Windows 10...

Microsoft to it credit did at least fix some glaring issues like taking forever to install and update so there at that. Eh, try dealing with underpowered crapboxes like the HP Stream 11, which is a lovely enough cheapo toy on Windows 8.1 ... but if you get one that's been "upgrades" by GW...

Re: So, what do you guys think of the new Ryzen 5000 series?

I need to rebuild my HTPC and can't get a Ryzen 4000 for love nor money, and Ryzen 5000 is so nice it's tempting me to spend the money to redo the main machine instead. If I could figure out and source parts for an ECC build of either, I'd bite your hand off pay a pay a pretty penny for it tomorrow....

Re: Wifi Printer Security

To answer your question, yes, my original concern was with the unit building out it's own AP, and I do not expect firmware updates to be maintained by any particular manufacture, but if you know of one company that tends to exceed the others in servicing their products, I would be interested to hea...

Maybe I'm missing something, but what are you worried about? Is it that you don't want to have any potentially insecure device on your Wi-Fi network, and believe either that printers can't be adequately secured via disabling services and checking for firmware updates fairly frequently, or that no pr...

Re: Can’t use consoles on apartment network

Double NAT means there's a NATing device upstream. If you're in student accomodation, this might be provided by the building, I guess. Put your Linksys device into AP mode or bridge mode. (You don't look to have put the actual model number of the Linksys into your post, you might get better response...

Have you reinstalled the drivers, using the latest releases available? Are all anti-virus and protection software disabled on both machines during tes...

Re: Better to Build new System next Year?

Yes, that's a good approach too if you've got an existing half-decent machine and the money to spare. There's always sweet times to buy, when good new tech launches. The NVIDIA 3080 looks nice for the performance (shame about the price and power consumption!), and I'm sure that the upcoming AMD CPUs...

Re: Better to Build new System next Year?

I would argue that an anticipated future financial shortfall is an argument for waiting, or even not building at all (not the other way around). Depends on the context. In some organisations, budget cycles mean you can have money this year that will disappear if you don't use it, and you know you'l...

Re: Better to Build new System next Year?

The answer to this question is always "yes, it's probably better to wait" unless the users of the system can demonstrate either (1) it will allow specific things which they cannot currently do or (2) finances will be more constrained in future.

Considering that Steam does has actual free games, it doesn't even make sense to anyone to pay Microsoft for these types of casual games anyway. Plenty of people don't have Steam, and don't think of themselves as gamers (or even think playing PC games is a silly waste of time) but still play Minesw...

It's all fine if it's done in a controlled and understood way. e.g. Boeing 747-400's still use 3.5" floppy disks to update their navigation systems, every 4 weeks. These planes entered service between 1989 and 2005, according to Wikipedia, and there are 71 passenger and 181 freighter ones still...

NVIDIA all the way on Linux, I'm afraid, unless you're religious about only using Free / non-proprietry software. AMD can be tolerable on Linux, but can also be annoying. IME ASUS can be bad on quality and terrible on support, while EVGA is the best by far. If you have a working solution for now and...

Annual global mortality rate, all causes, is 0.75% Assuming that deaths from this ran at 0.7% flat until literally everyone got it (a poor assumption) means the global mortality rate would be back at a level not seen since 1961. 7% OTOH, would be a level not seen in our lifetimes, a reasaon for pani...

Everyone who knows the difference between CMR (case mortality rate) and IMR (infection mortality rate). IMR cannot be measured easily, but CMR is easily measured by simply calculating the number of confirmed cases vs the death rate. I've been suggesting an IMR of near 1% due to the princess diamond...

What death statistics are you relying upon to make your opinion? Can't answer for dragontamer5788 obviously, but they are clearly pushing up the deaths percentage. Turns out that if you undercount the number of infections by an order of magnitude, you exagerate the death rate by an order of magnitu...

Something is wrong with your CPU PPD, 13k is achievable with 2 Skylake cores at 3.7 GHz while also running a GPU slot. (Higher total CPU load will lower the system's GPU slot PPD, there is a cross-over point; mine is at >= 2 CPU slot threads, where my GPU slot PPD goes from ~480k to ~465k.) Have you...
