Re: Kampman wants 32 Core benchies? Here are a few!

[...]But all else considered equal... AVX512 should be better. Alas, "all else is NOT equal", so its not like that in practice. The main issue with AVX512 512-bit mode is Intel's severe downclocking, which affects all other instructions. [...] Maybe in the future, Intel will be able to be...

Re: Kampman wants 32 Core benchies? Here are a few!

Is that weak scaling? Can't tell from a quick look through the linked web site. (Not sure if OP was looking for strong or weak though, just curious about the chess one.) To answer my own question, it's strong scaling. Also, I'd expect that OP is looking for good examples of software which exhibits ...

Re: Kampman wants 32 Core benchies? Here are a few!

Chess scales well. Apps use SSE for extensive bit-twiddling, and a fair bit of memory access for the hash tables. AVX and wide SIMD don't help much. Follow the instructions at http://www.ipmanchess.yolasite.com/amd---intel-chess-bench.php Is that weak scaling? Can't tell from a quick look through t...

Re: Kampman wants 32 Core benchies? Here are a few!

Raw performance is what matters in the end. Kinda. To users, what matters is ease of use, then support, then latency from job submission to job start. Raw perfomance only matters to the extent that it affects this last (third most important) factor, which it does -- but only when the competition fr...

Re: Kampman wants 32 Core benchies? Here are a few!

Exactly. 1.5% of peak is laughable. It's a huge step in the wrong direction in terms of efficiency of compute, especially as power density and total power becomes more and more of a challenge. If so, almost everything Intel-based on that list of 130 machines is laughable. Most of the rest could be ...

Re: Old PCI card in modern PC

A PCI graphics card, should work just fine, if the card, PC and bridge are all properly spec compliant, which they should be. The spec takes all this into consideration. To software, a PCIe to PCI bridge looks like a PCI to PCI bridge, so your GPU may be on another Bus number, but it will still wor...

Re: Old PCI card in modern PC

You don't require a DX9 graphics card for Windows Vista forward. DX9 is only required to activate the 3D compositing effects of the DWM, what some people inaccurately call Aero. You can display the desktop in 2D, Windows will do so using a basic VGA driver. People are confused by Microsoft's minimu...

Re: Am I bottlenecked?

Yes, it will be a bottleneck in some games. I was surprised at how much even a GTX 1070 was being held back in some titles when upgrading to a 7700K. [...] You didn't put your monitor into the OP but getting a monitor to run at high refresh rates is going to be the next best upgrade for your setup....

Vega 64 looks competitive to me. (Not done a proper look.) Or a performance drop and losing VRR for a GTX 1080 and keep the monitor, @ £450. :-? How can you not have checked the benchmarks AND assert that the 1080 loses to a Vega64?  WTH, you quote me and in doing so remove the link I p...

Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

Honestly, I'm less concerned about the few hundred dollars GSync premium than I am about how few GSync monitors hit the market. I actually view that as a good thing. That keeps the quality high. It seems to me the specs are rigid enough that they are rejecting the low-end monitors that AMD is happy...

Interesting.

Clean build, local account, NVIDIA driver-only install (no GFE).

If all is good, use a Microsoft account.

If all is good, install GFE and see if you end up back at low FPS?

Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

A blower can only work with the ambient temperature of the case in question. I need to rehouse my 7700K/1080Ti system, as the current Node 304 with its paltry 92mm intakes gets toasty enough in the summer to throttle the GPU. Well if the surrounding environment is inadequately cooled, any case can ...

Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

NVIDIA cards age way less gracefully than that that 6.5 y.o. Radeon has. That myth needs to die. When the 7950 was released it was second only to the 7970 and pretty much kicked sand in the face of NVidias offerings. Then they didn't do very much and NVidia accelerated away and AMD found themselves...

So if you're waiting for the 1180 at reasonable prices, you're going to be waiting....at least 5 more months. That's possible, I guess, if OP couldn't get a launch card at RRP. However, buying a 2.1 y.o. GTX 1080 now just seems to me to be like buying a GTX 480 in spring 2012. Yes, OP has an ancien...

I would not go with either, they are too old (10.5 and 13 months old). Rumours are strong for the GTX 1180 based on Turing to land next month, and AMD is already sampling 7 nm Vega 20 for launch this year (only talking so far about selling it in compute parts, not gaming ones, but if Turing kills th...
