Re: Talk me out of it!

This morning, I couldn't even talk myself out of buying a high-end Z270 board on sale; I'm not sure why you expect us to be able to talk you out of it. :P Seriously, DDR4 is extremely marked-up right now. Getting a 2x4 GB 2000MHz kit is going to cost me $125. I could have gotten 16 GB of DDR3, for t...

At LN2 temperatures, thermal paste cracking is a serious problem. I would imagine that liquid metal would crack quite often.

Regardless, liquid metal behaves as an insulator at low temperatures. I don't know why, but I know it does.

You only put enough LN2 into the pot to keep it around that temperature. LN2 pots tend to have fairly large copper bases that can make it a bit easier to control the temperature.

The i7 8700K is more suited for your particular use case than the 1700x. An i5 8600K, however, should offer the almost exactly the same experience as the 8700k in your workloads and costs significantly less.

Ryzen benefits greatly from increased memory frequency. Upping the ram to a 3200 MHz kit like this should provide a decent performance boost.

Re: Basic Upgrade for failing system

Really? There are 6 chokes along the left side of the CPU socket and 3 above. Counting chokes is the traditional method of determining how many phases. Did they do something atypical? If there are more than 8 "phases" on a VRM (such as the 6+3 advertised on the B350 Pro4), it must do some...

im generally considered crazy by the "average" overclocker but have had sandy class cpu's at 1.5v+ for months encoding videos with handbrake without issues so i dont think 1.4 is too insane to give a go. I won't call you crazy, but 1.5V does degrade Sandys over time. That said; I've pushe...

Re: OMG ThreadRipper Review Roundup

Wouldn't a 6800K be the best price performance right now? It was under $400 last I checked, and if you're only running one video card the PCIe deficit isn't material. Ryzen 7 + X370 performs better in the physics tests and is cheaper than the 6800K + X99. I'd rather not deal with the X99 platform e...

Re: Think you're going to repurpose that USB HDD? Think again

Eh. I try to avoid using hard drives of any sort with USB connector on the bottom for this very reason. A couple years back, I bought some Seagate (?) external hard drives that have a SATA and SATA power connector on the bottom of plastic case. The cable used is a USB to SATA cable. The cable works ...

Now that I've seen the performance of Threadripper, I've decided that my next system will be Ivy Bridge-E. The big thing I care about running is 3DMark physics :D, and a 4960X performs about the same as Ryzen for a lower overall platform cost since I already have DDR3. Threadripper and Skylak...

Re: This G3258 goes to 1.7V

When I was initially overclocking my z97 system, I misread 1.35V as 3.5V. I booted my Pentium AE with 2V vCore and 2.4V VCCIN at 4.4 GHz and ran it for ~40 minutes before I smelt the motherboard burning. Both the Pentium AE and motherboard survived this. The Pentium continued to run at 4.4 GHz with ...

I am. Right now, I get approximately 31 MH/s from my slightly overclocked Fury.

I've decided that I'm going to fund any computer /software upgrades with only what I mine. I've already bought some games on Steam by converting Ethereum to Bitcoin.

Re: Vega FE Fire Strike, on par with GTX 1080

Hmm... The guy in the link says it wasn't holding a constant 1600 MHz during the 3DMark run. That could be due to a lot of factors including throttling (bad) or the fact that some sections of the benchmark are just less demanding (neutral). I'm inclined to believe the former because the less demand...
